So what did everyone think of the Joni Mitchell special?? It played twice last night back to back, and still missed everything after kd lang's fabulous performance. But i have it on tape! :o) Anyways, what did everyone think of chapin and shawn's performance? and the rest of the evening? Wy, bryan adams, james taylor, elton john???? Well, heres mine: i loved kd's performance, but thats cause i am sort of partial, but i was watching chapin and shawn sing chelsea morning and i was grinning and crying at the same time. they seem to have a very strong friendship and their voices....sigh. :o) going to watch the tape :o) -colleen ******************************************************************* "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. Besides Shaw my personal favorites were K.D. Lang and Diana Krall and Elton. Guess I might be slightly biased for KD and Diana since they are fellow Canucks along with Joni. I'm not sure how much our overseas friends want to hear (maybe some have tapes coming?), so i'll keep comments fairly basic. First of all, great that it was a two hour show. Way too often, they try to cram stuff like this into an hour which doesn't do justice (esp. with commercials factored in). Nicely recorded, well filmed, good flow and continuity in relation to Joni's career. Wonderful band. Favorite faithful covers: Shawn and Mary- Emilia. I had no idea that Shawn could imitate Joni's unusual guitar tunings and playing style so perfectly. Her influence on Shawn's style is never more obvious. The harmonies were first rate. Shawn's comments to Joni prior to starting the song were engaging and relaxed. Shawn rooked mahvelous dahlinks. Wynona- You Turn Me On (i'm a Radio)- Wynona has very Joni-like pipes. Moved in and out of falsetto smooth as a you please. Elton- Free Man in Paris. Prior to the show, i was having a very hard time imagining this. Elton was in fine form. Nailed it! Favorite interpretive covers: Diana Krall- A Case of You. In a word: Amazing. In two words: Moving/ Brilliant. For me, the high point of the evening next to Shawn & Mary. Cindy Lauper- Carey. Cindy's still got it. Great to see her! Richard Thompson- Woodstock. Powerful and thoroughly engaging. Cassandra Wilson- The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines. Very cool, very difficult vocally. Engaging interpretation. For those who missed it, find a way to get your hands on this tape. I don't have duping capabilities or i would offer. An absolute must see. - -Rob - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I had a big grin on my face when it was done. I love Joni Mitchell. I love Shawn. I love Chapin. I liked the covers a lot more than I thought I would. All in all, a success. My definite favorite was Shawn and Chapin doing "Amelia." God, that was just awesome. Did you see how happy Joni looked with that cover? I loved the shots of her that they'd show during the performances. It was great to see her reactions. My second favorite was Diana Krall's version of A Case Of You...almost as breathtaking as Amelia. I also really liked Wynonna's version of You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio...loved the way her voice soared in that. Also loved the way Shawn and Chapin sang together in Chelsea Morning and Big Yellow Taxi...all in all, quite wonderful. :) ~lindsey - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
