I really want to hear this album. I recently went to see Lucy Kaplansky at the Borderline here in London and bought a copy of her album '10 Year Night'. I was completely knocked out by the harmonies on her song 'Just You Tonight' and looking at the liner notes, I see this is Jennifer - what a great voice! I had heard her name from her days with Jonatha Brooke as 'The Story' but still haven't heard any of their albums - seems like I've got a lot of catching up to do. Paul PS Talking of Lucy K, have you see the pictures of her and Shawn singing together back in 1985? Did you know her in High School Larry? If so any good > Shawn stories? Shawn got her start performing playing Anna in the high school musical "The King and I" in December, 1971. Having zero music talent myself, I pulled the curtain and made props. The most memorable things about the musical were Shawn's singing, the multiplicity of torrid teenage romances rumored to be going on backstage (this being the first opportunity for the sophomore girls to have steady access to the senior boys), and the electrical switches short-circuiting with sparks everywhere so that the fire extinguisher had to be brought into action. While I was friends with some of Shawn's friends, we were in different cliques and I don't recall ever even talking with her in the 5-6 years we went to the same school (our class had a couple hundred kids, I guess). If my fuzzy middle-aged memory serves me correctly, we were in the same English class. There the most poignant memories for me were of the elderly Chair of the English dept. dozing off in mid-sentence on a regular basis. I do have one distinct memory of Shawn. There was an old corner store across the street from the high school called "The Store." "The Store" was one of the places were the cool kids hung out; being a nerd, it's not someplace I spent very much time at. My place was the nerdish section of "The Wall" or (true confessions!) the library. Anyway, an unusual occasion arose so that I went into the store to buy something. There was Shawn: leaning against a wall in a sullen posture, long straight brown hair, skinny as a rail, clothed in baggy army fatigues, puffing furiously on a cigarette, staring very intensely at the wooden floor and obviously upset about something. As I walked in she blew out of a big puff of smoke that looked like the mushroom cloud from a nuclear test, and it caught my eye; immediately she raised her head, gave me a glare that said very clearly,"What are YOU looking at?" I didn't say anything, but I'm sure my body language was something to the effect of "Please, please don't hurt me." I bought the candy bar or whatever it was and scurried out of "The Store" so that Ms. Colvin could continue her contemplations. I enjoyed her night concert along the American River in Sacramento last year; she was such a patient performer at such a lousy venue (bugs flying in her mouth, motor boats revving their engines, jets overhead approaching a runway) it's clear that the intervening 25 years have mellowed Shawn the same way it has smoothed the rough edges of most members of the Class of '74 who aren't in prison.
