By the way, Neil, I appreciate how smart you've been about all your points. They are well taken, really. << Hopefully Q magazine or MOJO may be good enough to provide a US gig review. From the coverage Shawn has received from these magazines, she has many admirers in the EMAP empire. I agree with you, and hope that once she's doing a tour in support of a new album those magazines (and others) will want to cover it. Sony's International department, really one of the best, will be helping us to see to that. (At the same time that they make sure that the timing fits into their own marketing/release plans for Shawn overseas.) The "machine" of album/artist promotion does not want to operate in a vacuum, especially for an artist at Shawn's level (still on her way up, needing those stepping stones). They want a "story," and a new album/tour is obviously a stronger pull than a one-off gig in Wilmington, D.E. in the middle of a summer of one-off's (no offense to Wilmington, traditionally a great audience). Speaking of MOJO, one of their writers, Barney Hoskins, has been an AMAZING supporter of Shawn's for many years. Some of the best pieces about her have been written by him. I know he likes her, and I feel certain that if it's at all in his power he will want to cover her new activities from the get-go. << Virgin is a fine station, recently taken over but has had a mixed time with regards to listening figures. The last time I heard Shawn mentioned on Virgin was a certain Danny Baker (One of the UK's best broadcasters) having a laugh at the Shawn post-it notes his office had received as a promotional item. There are other stations which are ideal for the mixed audience Shawn can attract. Notable are Magic FM (EMAP again) in London and the Century group of stations in various parts of the country. We used to have those post-it's around the office and they were certainly an odd, though handy, promotional item! I also thought you were going to remenisce about the U.K. talk radio DJ who had an interview scheduled with her live via satellite, and something happened (I can't remember what) and she didn't show up (she was very pregnant at the time and they thought she may have gone into labor) and so he spent the entire show kibitzing with the production guy at the studio in Austin. Anyone remember that one? << But one final point : A video of Shawn live would be popular over here, just as much as it would be anywhere. Although I like MCC, the hook to get me to buy the Jubilee video was Shawn's inclusion. Unfortunately it was only a brief (but fine) appearance. There is obviously video out there - What about the Sessions at W54th set - I got the compilation DVD from the US when I saw Shawn was on it ( and good to see Steuart Smith as well !). There are obviously some other excellent performances on this as well. Isn't Sessions a Sony production or is there a Sony link that can be exploited ? You just have to read the critical acclaim about Rosanne Cash's video 'Interiors' (I think) to predict how Shawn's video would be welcomed. You've obviously seen the requests from the list about this. Why not ? OK I know we're asking a lot and I'm aware of the potential legal complications, distribution costs etc. Why not sell it on the net exclusively to minimise on-costs ? Points well-taken on the video front, and I will pass them on. But you should realize that, as Shawn has yet to have real video success (massive airplay on MTV or VH1), except for "Sunny," it has not yet proven to be cost-effective to make and distribute a video compilation. Perhaps that can change if this next record is successful. It's something Sony would have to release as they own all the videos, and Shawn (to some extent). I believe that the "Sessions" people, who are affiliated with Sony, have been working on trying to put something together. But don't forget that that show has featured far more than Sony artists, and so you are dealing with clearances from (competitive) labels, publishers, the other artists, etc. Yuck. That's why an unofficial "tape tree" is the best way, for now, for Shawn's biggest fans to satisfy their desires for video material. You guys can get it done a lot faster and probably include more material than a potential commercial release (did I say that out loud?). Don't forget -- you all are the hard-core fans. Hard-core fans - commercial release - hard-core fans - commercial release... what's wrong with this picture? << I'm not trying to 'teach my granny to suck eggs' (If that expression is common in the States), neither do I want nor wanted to cause offense. I have no idea what that means, and I've been to the U.K. at least 12 times!!!!!!! << PS - What about a collective of list members working on a website for Shawn with info, merchandise, maybe an mp3 download ? I'd help - What about www.ColvinKlein.com :) ! ahh, I wanted to address that. When I said I "maintain" Shawn's site I think I should have been more clear: the site is made by and updated by Columbia Records. I do funnel info. to them when it happens, that's what you see in the "news" section. But I don't actually keep the site up myself. I will, however, see to it that the tour dates are continually updated. And you all should know that we have a "links" section at the end where we've listed all the other Shawn sites we have known about. If there are any new sites that you all want to start, or any that you know of, feel free to tell me about them and I will make sure they are linked via the Columbia website. AND, FYI, the Columbia site will likely be redesigned when the new record is upon us, with new photos and songs and all the activities that will come along at that time. Thanks to everyone, especially Neil, for your concerns about and support of Shawn!
