You'll get no vitriol from me. Just a tip of the hat. I'm very new here so I've no experience of the past politics of this list. When I first got on the internet, I went straight to Joni's site, found they had a discussion group and joined up. Not long after, I did a search for all things Shawn on the net. As a professional musician myself, I found a list called FOLKBIZ which claimed to be for 'folk/acoustic musicians and singer songwriters like Shawn Colvin etc etc'. Whilst quite informative about the trials and tribulatons of the lifestyle and the tricks of the trade, I don't think I've seen one single post mentioning Shawn Colvin (although using her name as a reference point to attract subscribers says a lot about her 'musicians' musician' status). I found the 'steadyon' Iist, signed on, had maybe half a dozen posts in a year, until I was directed here. This list seems pretty healthy to me. All I want, really, is the chance to connect with 'like-minded ears' - I truly love Shawn's voice - her phrasing and vocal riffs - coupled with her lyrics, which have their own voice, and who, with her oh so tasteful guitar playing, is one of a few artists guaranteed to make me well up whenever I hear her. I figure that people who 'get her' too will have similar sensibilities, despite our disparate backgrounds. I also figure they'll have a similar sense of humour to Shawn, who each time I've seen her, has really made me laugh. > Gone are the days of seeing Shawn gracing these shores. Years ago I rushed out and bought a vinyl copy of 'Steady On' when it was first released in the UK, having heard just 20 seconds of the title track on the radio. It was that instant for me. To me this album was, and remains, a masterpiece. I've seen her four times here in London, most recently the one-off she did with John Leventhal at the Hanover Grand not long after the release of 'Repairs', during her Jackson Browne support tour. But, for me, the very best was her Jazz Cafe gig with Larry Klein and Stueart Smith (for me, up there with Joni at the Victoria Palace on the Miles of Aisles tour and Dylan at the Hammersmith Odeon on the Oh Mercy tour as my all-time favourite gigs). 'Fat City' had just come out and all the Sony top brass were there to see her. I flooked a really good seat in the balcony. I remember she said she was going to play a Steve Earle song and someone groaned. She just said "Yes, we like him" and then blew everyone away with a stunning version of 'Someday'. I have a tape of an interview she did on the radio with Bob Harris, where she talks about that infamous heckler at one of her first UK gigs at the London School of Economics. Whilst I didn't go, I remember that night vividly. Thinking I was the only person in the UK who had ever heard of her, I discovered she was playing literally 2 minutes walk from where I was working that night in Covent Garden. I was upset for weeks. I later discovered that I had also missed her supporting 'Blue Nile' at The Dominion. I love Blue Nile ('Hats' and before, in particular). Did anyone here see that? > But while the likes of Lucy K (and her record company) keep us up to >date of what she is up to, unfortunately Shawn and her colleagues rely >on a loyal fanbase (upon which Shawn's relative success is >fundamentally based) to pass on rumours and snippets of information >as to gigs, potential release dates. I have to agree that Shawn's official website feels like the 'Mary Celeste', a deserted ship in an ocean of thriving websites. No one's there - they haven't even bothered to put up her forthcoming gigs. Perhaps someone here could offer to take it on. Loook what Wally Breese (who has just died, by the way) and Jim have done for jonimitchell.com. Sorry, I thought you were going only for this gig. If you can include it in your overall holiday plans, why not. My brother was in California when Shawn, Bruce Hornsby, Jackson Browne et al were playing and saw the last 2 gigs. A certain Mr David Crosby showed up to guest, but no sign of Melissa or her now famous child, helped into the world my Mr Crosby. I also regret not making the Telluride festival a couple of years ago, even though Shawn couldn't play there. The place looks stunning and the atmosphere sounds very laid back. > All I want, really, is the chance to connect with 'like-minded ears' - I > truly love Shawn's voice - her phrasing and vocal riffs - coupled with > her lyrics, which have their own voice, and who, with her oh so tasteful > guitar playing, is one of a few artists guaranteed to make me well up > whenever I hear her. Good gig - I saw them up in Glasgow on the same trip (I think it was King Tut's ). Larry Klein was pretty ropey on the guitar to start with, but he improved as the show went on. I had the audacity to go up and talk to Loudon Wainwright at the London gig (Shawn featured on one of his recent albums). A true gent. I stuttered the usual words of appreciation and said I should let him get back talking to his friends, but he said stay and chat for a while - and we did for a few minutes. > But, for > me, the very best was her Jazz Cafe gig with Larry Klein and Stueart Smith > (for me, up there with Joni at the Victoria Palace on the Miles of Aisles > tour and Dylan at the Hammersmith Odeon on the Oh Mercy tour as my > all-time favourite gigs). 'Fat City' had just come out and all the Sony top > brass were there to see her. I flooked a really good seat in the balcony. You got to the balcony for that gig ! Must have booked early and pretended you were going to eat the food ! I was downstairs with a few friends, one of whom fainted just at the moment Shawn came on ! (We'd been waiting ages.) She was revived pretty quickly and enjoyed a truly great gig. Steuart Smith is an incredible musician - always like his playing. Do you know what he's up to now ? I saw Shawn for the first time at The Mean Fiddler with T Bone Wolk on the accordian and bass. Shawn told a story about T Bone and Bonnie Raitt which I've posted before She also covered Baby, Now That I've Found You which was outstanding . A couple of years later a similar cover appeared on an Alison Krauss CD and I'm sure Ms Krauss thanked Shawn at a music awards a little later (Might have been for anything not necessarily the arrangement.) Now - The Jazz Cafe Great venue, good choice of position depending on what type of night you want. Stand in front of the stage for the true aural experience. Upstairs in the restaurant for a good view and a pretty good sound. Stay near the entrance and on the other side of the bar if you want a (very quiet) chat and hear the music drifting through. The downside - Record company reps propping up the bar and talking loudly all the way through. Also - very noisy cash tills ! All they need to do is line them with something or make the place cashless by selling booze vouchers ! I tried out all 3 of the aforementioned positions on separate nights when Emmylou Harris and Spyboy played - Incredible gigs. Get the album Spyboy of you haven't already. (Nanci Griffith guested on the first night). > > I remember she said she was going to play a Steve Earle song and > someone groaned. She just said "Yes, we like him" and then blew > everyone away with a stunning version of 'Someday'. One of my favourite covers. It introduced me to Steve Earle's music and I'm eternally grateful for that. Seen him a few times including a one-off at Dingwalls. I think Lucy K has a Steve Earle cover (Somewhere Out There) on her last album. > > > I have a tape of an interview she did on the radio with Bob Harris, where > she talks about that infamous heckler at one of her first UK gigs at the > London School of Economics. Yeah, I do a bit of web design and own a few domain names, but you need a steady flow of information to keep things interesting. And AGF her management company (hint hint) haven't posted either directly or through anyone for some time. Considering Shawn's absence from these shores and AGF telling me several months ago that the next time Shawn would be over here was going to be 'sometime in the new year' , I could use my domain name 'neverneverland.co.uk'. Nothing up there right now, just a test for some of the stuff I work on. Maybe Sony/Columbia would want to buy one of my other names 'cowboyoutfit.co.uk'. Or will I put it on stonefoxchase.com, which I'm thinking of offering to Mr Bob Harris for free as it was the theme music to the OGWT. Sadly, I've just decided to sell my favourite name hotburrito.com about which I'm sure you are aware of the Gram Parson's connection. I need money for a holiday, and I've done nothing with the site (and I should have), so it's going to an interested party across the pond. > > > > In the meantime, I'll continue to check out new artists (or old ones.... > > As you'll see in this month's 'Across the Pond', we have Terry Callier, > Geoff Muldaur, Tom Ovans, Atlantic Crossing, Katy Moffatt, Jack Williams, > Kevin Montgomery, Jim Page, Balfour Toujours, and Eric Bibb all over from > the States to play in the UK in April. Okay, so since Neil and our "across the pond" friends have started a little thread, let's expand it... I know we have done this before, but there are some newbies who weren't here for the first round (which happened a couple years ago, I think). So, everyone, please tell us all about your FIRST Shawn experience... How did you discover her, and describe that first concert for us all! I'll go first... I was driving from Nashville to Vancouver on a little vacation adventure, and my friend and fellow musician brought along a tape he had made -- Steady On on one side, and Lone Justice's Shelter album on the other. I had never heard of either Shawn or Lone Justice, and so I got to experience Shawn for the first time driving through the mountains in Wyoming and Montana. Imagine hearing "Shotgun Down the Avalanche" for the first time as you are driving through a mountain pass -- it was awesome. Steady On blew me away -- I had never heard anything like it, and I think that is the only tape we listened to the entire 3 weeks we were traveling. And because we lived in Nashville, we were fortunate enough to have Shawn come play there about 5 times a year in the little clubs there. Those were the best shows I have seen her do... back when it was very intimate and laid back, with lots of banter with the audience and not as much polish. The first time I saw her was a solo show... and she was trying out the songs that were going to be on Fat City... and all I remember was being blown away at her guitar playing and leaving the show thinking, "I quit. I'm hanging it up." I was actually depressed because she was so good and I felt I could never measure up (funny to learn later that she wrote "Kill the Messenger" after having a similar experience seeing another artist!).... but I was a fan for life, too. I had never seen anyone capture an audience like that, with no "gimmicks", just darn good music. And I was able to see her 4-5 more times in that same venue, each time it was more fun because it was the exact same crowd and we all knew each other and kept the jokes with Shawn going from show to show. Very cool vibe back in those days. Anyway, I've rambled enough... I miss the early years; heck, I miss seeing Shawn period! Time to dust off Steady On again..... Ther reply was 'This is Shawn Colvin, the best musician in the whole world.' Recognizing the name, I said 'Shes at the fair next week.' I went, and I've been a fan ever since. Sarah, I envy your "first time" experience hearing Steady On! I also envy your early day intimate concerts with her...sigh...I have yet to see Shawn solo. Maybe this gig in Woodinville will be. As for my first time listening to Shawn-- well, a little background first. I had been a HUGE Mary Chapin Carpenter fan, I had all her albums, had memorized all her songs, the works. (Gee kinda like my Shawn infatuation...hehheh....only I think my Shawn addiction is even *worse*.) Anyway, being a good fan, I of course always read the liner notes of her cds (well, it was tapes back then for me to tell the truth :) ). I noticed Shawn's name appearing constantly, and began to wonder who this person was. Then I heard that they had sung a duet on Shawn's album Cover Girl, so I checked that album out from the library. I remember not being too blown away by One Cool Remove (the duet they had sung), but I absolutely *adored* Lookin For the Heart of Saturday Night...just her voice, the way she sang, her guitar playing...ah, bliss. I truly had never heard anything like her before. So, I went on to collect her original works, and after hearing those she became my favorite artist, hands down. Still is :) The songs that really hooked me on her were Polaroids, Kill The Messenger, Monopoly, Stranded, Shotgun, The Story, Dead of The Night... ...sigh. Yep, she's still the best. I just can not wait for her new album. I hope she plays some new stuff at the concert in June. The first time I actually saw her in concert was a couple looong years later at the Paramount in Seattle (went with Anna, hi Anna!). She was with a full band, promoting AFSR. Excellent, of course. I was so surprised and delighted at what a great sense of humor she has. That's one of the best parts of her shows. Of course, I could have seen her way back in 94 if I'd been more on the ball...rrrr. I was in a country phase for some inexplicable reason, and was going to see Reba McEntire in concert. That evening, before I left for the show, I read in the paper about another concert happening that night, one Ms Shawn Colvin. Let's just say I am eternally regretful that I saw Reba instead of Shawn. So there's a long-winded post of my first Shawn experiences...how about you???? yeah, that's right, YOU! hehheh ~lindsey now playing on mp3: fire, from lady jane grey :) yay Sarah! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. FYI, I work in Shawn's management company and I read EVERY single one of the posts on this list. I very much enjoy the discussions, both good, bad and fantastic (Shawn having an affair with Jackson AND Bonnie was my favorite!) but I do not want to in any way guide the topics as this is a FAN list started by Shawn's FANS, and for their enjoyment of their shared passion for Shawn, and related topics. Jean (aka Big Hair), who started the list, keeps in touch with me and with Ron on a semi-regular basis, and when there are FACTS to disseminate we are always more than happy to share or confirm them and, as it Jean's list, she then passes them on. I also keep Shawn's website (www.shawncolvin.com) up to date with tidbits of news as they come about. Check the "news" column for updates. Up till now I have not felt the need to post tour dates as Lindsey or Jenn always seem to have found them on Pollstar before I've even signed on for the day. But perhaps in the interest of "getting it from the source" I should do so in the future. No problem! As for "rumours and tidbits" of release news, they are just that! The wonderful, frustrating, creative and trying process of writing and recording an album is unable to be pinned on a time-line. Believe me, as I have moved the projected mix dates four times already! Much as my hyper-organized brain would love to be able to announce the plans for every milestone leading up to the next album, the process is ever-evolving and so, rather than pass on news that is uncertain and sure to change, our official stance is to say nothing until there is actually something to say. When Shawn says "maybe December" to a fan after a show it is also because she is not sure yet. The work is still in progress, and until it's complete there is no way to begin to make a schedule. You are correct in saying that Shawn's priorities have changed since she is now a wife and mother as well as an artist. Or rather, her priorities have EXPANDED. The tour dates she does these days are sporadic, thereby allowing her to continue to make a living while also writing, recording, and raising her daughter at the same time. It's not easy. But I guarantee you that when the new record is finally released (and therefore she is freed from some of her responsibilities of the last year) she will begin touring more extensively and more frequently, EVEN IN THE U.K. Shawn was fortunate enough to have had good success in the U.K. the last time around, even getting good airplay for the first time on Virgin radio. She sold out shows in Glasgow and (excuse my memory, was it Manchester or Liverpool?) and waded through the mud at Glastonbury (her new Wellies ruined and left there!) where her set's live broadcast on the BBC is still talked about by new fans in letters and emails. SO, sorry for the novel here but I just hate to see someone making pronouncements about the state of Shawn's career without any real knowledge of the intricacies. And hey, not that you should know. As a fan your job is to do exactly what you said and come upon her new album whenever it is released and enjoy it, or not, based on the music itself, not the "rumors and snippets" of her email discussion groups and the long-winded ramblings of a person in her management company. (if you can - I know it's difficult - unless you've won the lottery) We have outstanding artists visiting (and from) these shores, playing small intimate venues. Recently I've seen Buddy Miller and a while ago Lucy Kaplansky. Sure they want to grow their audiences, in the way that Shawn has tried (and with a little success) over here, but they come and (at present) keep on coming. We had those golden years with Shawn, but these are no more. Gone are the days of seeing Shawn at the Mean Fiddler, The Jazz Cafe, The Royalty Theatre, The Arches and other relatively intimate gigs. Gone are the days of seeing Shawn gracing these shores. She is a proud mother and quite rightly should stay close to home and earn an acceptable amount of money to take care of herself and her family. But while the likes of Lucy K (and her record company) keep us up to date of what she is up to, unfortunately Shawn and her colleagues rely on a loyal fanbase (upon which Shawn's relative success is fundamentally based) to pass on rumours and snippets of information as to gigs, potential release dates. The only centre of information is a mailing list which a certain record company unsuccessfully attempted to undermine by launching a competitor a couple of years ago. This mailing list is only kept alive by rumours, estimated album dates and expressions of frustration about the lack of material available. Infrequent contributions and attempts to generate more traffic are laudable, but I don't think the traffic at present justifies smoe.org keeping this list alive for much longer. ( I may well be deigned guilty of not contributing for some time - but if you have no worthwhile input, what can you say ?) A shame, but, as a contributor to keeping the hardware up to date, I could not really put hand on heart and blame anyone for binning the list. We now know that the next decent amount of trafiic on the list (except a few thought out and maybe vitriolic responses to this) will be reactions to an album 9 months away (and probably longer). There may be a repeat of a guest appearance on Sesame St., a theme tune here or there and a faintly heard background song in a film that we could all wax lyrical about, but I'd rather hear new material, experience a gig in a venue minus the echoes from blank walls and a few empty chairs as the fanbase declines due to mutual indifference. Not much is going to happen in the near future, methinks, and I'm all the sadder for it. A great talent is still out there but priorities have changed and, we all must appreciate, Shawn has these priorities spot on. Family first and everything else comes after this. All I'm saying, albeit in a long-winded fashion, is let's not expect too much. I don't really want to hold my breath for 9 months, I don't want to experience a week by week countdown - I'd like to just come upon the album at some time and (hopefully) enjoy it. In the meantime, I'll continue to check out new artists (or old ones - Hopefully CSNY will come over soon) and get on with my life. Shawn is doing exactly this, and good luck to her. >> - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. If I had not read it; would be hard to notice any actual updates. On the positive side Lisa does make excellent points about the release date and Shawn's priorities.
