Help please. :) I've just had an e-mail from songwriter Hugh Blumenfeld who is the 'about.com' guide for Folk Music, confirming that he's received # 7 and will be putting it up on the website shortly, so bookmark http://www.folkmusic.about.com and check back later. If you (or anyone else on this list) would like an e-mail copy that you can also send to friends who are interested in the UK folk/acoustic scene, just let me know. Do you already know about 'folkmusic.about.com' ? I really like the way the site is developing since Hugh took over as 'guide'. His CD reviews are really stimulating and well written, introducing me to several acts new to me over here in the UK - this month Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer and Peter Mulvey & David Goodrich - and, as a performer myself, I can relate to his 'Notes from the Road' column. I notice on his website he was heavily involved with 'Fast Folk' and his song "Brothers" appears on The Best of Contemporary Folk (Cherry Lane) alongside work by Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. Very best Paul PS. Thanks so much to everyone on this list who sent such encouraging and extremely helpful posts about Shawn's Chateau Ste Michelle gig. How can I possibly resist it? (if you can - I know it's difficult - unless you've won the lottery) We have outstanding artists visiting (and from) these shores, playing small intimate venues. Recently I've seen Buddy Miller and a while ago Lucy Kaplansky. Sure they want to grow their audiences, in the way that Shawn has tried (and with a little success) over here, but they come and (at present) keep on coming. We had those golden years with Shawn, but these are no more. Gone are the days of seeing Shawn at the Mean Fiddler, The Jazz Cafe, The Royalty Theatre, The Arches and other relatively intimate gigs. Gone are the days of seeing Shawn gracing these shores. She is a proud mother and quite rightly should stay close to home and earn an acceptable amount of money to take care of herself and her family. But while the likes of Lucy K (and her record company) keep us up to date of what she is up to, unfortunately Shawn and her colleagues rely on a loyal fanbase (upon which Shawn's relative success is fundamentally based) to pass on rumours and snippets of information as to gigs, potential release dates. The only centre of information is a mailing list which a certain record company unsuccessfully attempted to undermine by launching a competitor a couple of years ago. This mailing list is only kept alive by rumours, estimated album dates and expressions of frustration about the lack of material available. Infrequent contributions and attempts to generate more traffic are laudable, but I don't think the traffic at present justifies smoe.org keeping this list alive for much longer. ( I may well be deigned guilty of not contributing for some time - but if you have no worthwhile input, what can you say ?) A shame, but, as a contributor to keeping the hardware up to date, I could not really put hand on heart and blame anyone for binning the list. We now know that the next decent amount of trafiic on the list (except a few thought out and maybe vitriolic responses to this) will be reactions to an album 9 months away (and probably longer). There may be a repeat of a guest appearance on Sesame St., a theme tune here or there and a faintly heard background song in a film that we could all wax lyrical about, but I'd rather hear new material, experience a gig in a venue minus the echoes from blank walls and a few empty chairs as the fanbase declines due to mutual indifference. Not much is going to happen in the near future, methinks, and I'm all the sadder for it. A great talent is still out there but priorities have changed and, we all must appreciate, Shawn has these priorities spot on. Family first and everything else comes after this. All I'm saying, albeit in a long-winded fashion, is let's not expect too much. I don't really want to hold my breath for 9 months, I don't want to experience a week by week countdown - I'd like to just come upon the album at some time and (hopefully) enjoy it. In the meantime, I'll continue to check out new artists (or old ones - Hopefully CSNY will come over soon) and get on with my life. Shawn is doing exactly this, and good luck to her. > _____________Snip > > PS.
