Maura O'Connell-March I've been listening to her CD's for years but never got the chance to see her live, what a performance and it was extra special since it was at a small club. She even did a fantastic version of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love." Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell - The Cry Cry Cry concert I saw was in 98 so that doesn't count. Lucy and Richard did a 40 minute set each and both sang along on some songs. Richard even let Lucy sing Mary Magdeline since he had a bit of a cold. Ferron - I had seen her in 1995 but that was with a full band, this time is was her and her guitarist and bass player, many songs were heartbreaking and she was cracking the audience up between songs with her comments. David Wilcox - I saw him in the fall of 98 and was not impressed, but this time he was almost like a younger James Taylor, he was so good. The Nields -Been seeing them for a while (Thanks again DC) Their energy is infectious, their fans are some of the nicest people I have met and their harmonies are stunning. Susan Werner- I had no Idea I would end up going to so many Susan shows in 99 as I did, but not once was I disappointed. I HIGHLY recommend seeing her if you haven't already!! On A Summers Night - I had seen Cliff Eberhardt, John Gorka, Patty Larkin and Cheryl Wheeler individually over the years and was looking forward to hearing them all together. It was a beautiful, harmonious show and hilarity was added during and between songs, when the Peacocks would cry, since the show was at the Zoo. Lucinda Williams- after missing her 5 times previously I was not going to miss this blazing performance in Massachusetts. Lynn Miles- she did a co-bill with Richard Shindell on Halloween, it was just her and her guitar and you could hear the audience swooning after she sang her first song. Shawn Colvin & Mary Chapin Carpenter - Philadelphia, PA This was THE BEST show I went to, hands down. Shawn opened with Steuart Smith on guitar and sang about 9 songs. Her banter about the new baby after some guy says "we missed you Mom" Shawn goes "Mom"? She says she's limited being a Mom now, her sets can only be so long. She thought she' was going to be one of those nazi-nurses, 6 months and no more feeding.. now it's 10 months...she needs me. She's not here tonight....but I must go pump, she described how she was pumping before she came onstage and the poor production manager came to the room and immediately turned away and said 5 minutes to showtime.(Shawn acted this out of course), it does look rather odd and there are things you NEVER thought you'd see, do or say till you crossed that black hole called "Parenthood" The poop, the poop is verrrrry important, it's been the longest since I haven't talked to my husband in 24 hours...did she poop? Steuart adds "it's kind of a tea leaves situation" what'd it look like? solid? how many colors??......and why is it no matter what stage in their infanthood that they're fussy and you always get the answer "she's probably teething" and shawn says .."well then, she's been teething since she came out." She was in an airport trying to get the 3 of them checked in and the meanbitchy plane lady asks gruffly what's the baby's name..."Shawn says Callie" and the evilplanelady says "Okay take Collie on the plane", "it's not a dog planelady." Hearing all this was hilarious as usual but the best was yet to come. Chapin & band were in great form and Shawn came out with Steuart during "Down at the twist and shout" to sing along and playfully twirled and two-stepped danced as John Jennings partner. When the band sang the line in French, Shawn who didn't know the lines, threw up her arms and continued dancing with JJ while Chapin had a good laugh. Chapin did the band introductions and Shawn was being sassy, Chapin introduced her as Miss Naomi Judd, commenting on her twirling dress, but said it was made of the wrong fabric, it needed to be patent leather and Chapin said she touched Naomi's once. Shawn continued twirling and Chapin said I hope she's wearing some bloomers under there and the stage lights went dim and Shawn flashed the audience in the dark but I'm sure the people near the front saw something...Chapin was in hysterics along with the band and all of us, Chapin said we've got our own little Drew Barrymore here, Chapin called on for a cheer for Shawn's antics, which led into "I feel Lucky and he thinks he'll keep her". Finally got to hear them duet live on "That's the way love goes," "One Cool Remove" and "C'mon C'mon"! Shawn's antics during Chapin's performance of "If I were a Diva" had the crowd in stitches. Thank you again and again Lisa for the ticket and convincing me to go, and another Big Thank You to Bobby, Sally and Susan for the great time at the MCC Tramps show in New York and the PDOTP. Performers I hope to see in 2000 Beth Nielsen Chapman Beth Orton Kelly Willis Ron Sexsmith Steve Earle Buddy and Julie Miller Eleanor McEvoy Emmylou Harris...and that's just to start. Hey Jean!! Paula Cole's coming to Toad's in March, you going?? =) Love the CD reviews and recommendations, keep them coming!!
