My wife was watching the film "Sliding Doors" the other night and I found myself singing along to one of the songs, which was "tenderness on the block" performed by Patty Larkin, who also sung over the end credits. She may have been featured throughout the film, I dont know. Anyway, off to the record shop i went... No patty larkins cd's to be found anywhere ( maybe never released in the UK?) and when I did find the soundtrack to the film.. no patty larkin tracks on there either. Very strange. Can anyone shed any light on this?? This gets discussed periodically on the Patty Larkin list and no one has talked to her about whether she'd ever record it. It's a great version but when Patty talks about that movie, she's most proud of her song "Coming Up for Air" being included. I have that in Their Own Words CD (other people on the album include Dave Alvin, Lucinda Williams, and Joey Ramone explaining how he came to write "I Want to Be Sedated." BTW, the song "That's the Way Love Goes" was co-written by Lefty Frizzel and J.D. Shaver (I think that is the co-writer). Willie Nelson does a great job on his tribute to Lefty CD. Next week on my radio show on our college station I'm going to feature Texas songwriters, so I'll have to play Shawn's version (as well as her doing Steve Earle's "Someday"), and Willie doing another Lefty tune. One final note, speaking of people (now) from Texas. Slaid Cleaves has a new album out on Rounder or Philo entitled "Broke Down." It is really quite good. I highly recommend it. It includes a tune that Woody Guthrie wrote the lyrics to and and for which Slaid wrote the music.
