Regardless of my motives, I did just what you said. But to beat this nearly dead horse a wee bit more, allow me at least to explain the Joni Mitchell tie-in. Back in the late '60s and early '70s Joni was one of only a very few successful women singer-songwriters. Indeed, that's why, even a quarter century later, every young woman who writes her own songs and plays an acoustic guitar is initially labeled as being a musical "Joni-look-alike." It's bizarre. But much more bizarre was the music press's obsession with her sex life. We're not talking about curious individuals on a listserv now, but seemingly credible magazines like Rolling Stone, whose staff just didn't get the Joni thing at all. That Rolling Stone was male-dominated is putting it mildly. They were undisguisedly scornful of Joni and never passed up the chance to demean her by writing her off as a "chick" making chick music. There were two low points in this apparent campaign against her. One came after her big hit with Court and Spark. That album was too good for even RS to diss. But her next album, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, went off on a limb with groundbreaking jazz and world music sounds--sounds that we take for granted today. It's a phenomenal album, now universally lauded. At the time, however, Rolling Stone pounced on it with bitingly scornful reviews, culminating in an award for "Worst Album of the Year." But the truly extraordinary low point was the "love life chart." I can't remember now which year it was, but RS actually published a full scale timeline tracking every man Joni had ever dated or supposedly slept with. Can you believe it?! All the music celebrities I mentioned in my prank were all from that chart. I didn't expect most of you to get that reference, but now you know. I was attempting to mock that aspect of our celebrity worship. Anyhow, that was my intention. Though it doesn't address Sharon's observations, which still stand tall. - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
