I know that we are all entitled to our own opinions but surely we have to all agree that this was a superb album. I mean, I don't think there's a weak song on the whole album. What about 'if I were brave' and 'new thing now' my favourite songs on the album, both really beautiful songs and songs with deep meanings just like stuff like 'Monopoly' on Fat City. I think that 'Small Repairs' is Shawn's best album to date. And don't think that you could say that every song on Fat City is up to the really high standards of EVERY song on Small Repairs. 'Tennessee' and 'Set the prairie on fire' are two examples of songs on Fat City which, in my opinion, are not up to the amazing standards of other songs on the album like 'I don't know why' and 'Monopoly'. That's just the way I feel about things, Cheers Paul (from London) - -----Original Message----- From: John DeFord To: small-repairs@smoe.org Date: 19 November 1999 00:43 Subject: [s-r] what shawn does >so.... all i want from shawn is some new damn music. get off yer ass and put out some new, good stuff lady! forget about sunny came home. it bought the house you wanted to get out of, but it was not your best work. a few small repairs was decent sonically, but overall, it was weak artistically. aside from 'trouble' and the 'the facts about jimmy', there wasn't much worthy of what was on 'steady on' or 'fat city'. all of this is my opinion and mine alone. sell out and i'm outta here. there are many other people making great music out there who still want it for all of the right reasons. don't forget shawn, i have the music you've given us all already. i don't need you, shawn, you need me. > >-john >too tired to realize that my gruntlement was this low and too tired to care. > > >__________________________________________________ >Do You Yahoo!? >Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com > > >------------------------------------------------------------------------ >To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub >scribe small-repairs' in the message body. John spreads an unfounded rumor: >a few small repairs was decent sonically, but overall, it was weak artistically. Are the rest of you going to take that lying down?! Why that's even the name of this listserv! Sacrilege!! Let's hear some response, for heaven's sake. Paul can't be left to shoulder the load by himself. Personally, my favorite on AFSR is Suicide Alley. Both sonically and lyrically. Sonically, I find it down right hypnotic--on the CD and even more so in concert. I am always moved by the swelling tension in that last verse, at the moment where she fails to go back to the chorus as anticipated and instead prolongs the verse: "For the souls of the departed and the renegades of love You and me we gotta be all we dreamed of In the ruins of mischief through the ravages of time You got a place in this world of mine" Great stuff. Lucinda Williams uses that same expectation effectively (of the final verse ending but then it doesn't) on "The Way You Move Is Right In Time," the first song on her Car Wheels on A Gravel Road CD. On Suicide Alley, I also like: "You're a loose cannonball on a sinking ship From the belly of the beast, shot from the hip But you don't have to be going down the dark hall You're not tied to the chair, you're not nailed to the wall" P.S. I certainly agree with John about "Trouble." Especially her solo version with the high capo. Besides which, Trouble is my middle name. heh heh. P.P.S. Kat can kiss my white ass. What does she know? She lives in Australia for crying out loud! - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I confess. I made it all up. I'm about to be off-line till Monday, so allow me to clear the air: I have no reason whatsoever to believe Shawn has even *met,* much less slept with, any the aforementioned music celebrities -- all of whom were once known or rumored to have been lovers of my other goddess, St. Joni. So James Taylor, David Crosby, Messrs. Stills and Nash (& Young!), David "Free Man in Paris" Geffen and drummer John Guerin are in the clear. (Plus, as Dave points out, Geffen would be in the clear anyhow!) Joni's ex-husband and current friend, Larry Klein is a Shawn buddy, but definitely not a lover. But you must admit, it did get your attention, right? In all honesty, I too don't particularly care to discuss my music heroes' sex lives on lists devoted to their music. (Even though, like everyone else, I find it hard not to look if such information is put out there.) My post was a joke, and quite possibly one that was ill-considered. Regrettably, despite my poor judgement, I still got a major stitch in my side laughing about it. Heh heh. Also this: For those of you who are new on the list, Anna and Kat and I are friends. (At least *I* think we are.) The "attack" on Anna was faked as well. A Useful Hint: Those of you who are slowly getting used to my bizarre sense of humor may begin to notice that when I'm pulling your collective leg, I usually try to include blatantly condradictory or otherwise inane statements. So now you know. However, while we're on the subject, I did just hear this juicy tidbit about Shawn: Guess why Bonnie Raitt is divorcing Michael O'Keefe? Wild, huh? Who knew these two gurlz had it in them? Kat, those "non-stop orgy" rumors about the supergroup tour are sounding more reliable every minute, eh? - -Meri "Trouble" Jones- - -Just cuz I don't use smilely faces doesn't mean I'm not crying inside- . . . . . - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Paul can't be left to shoulder the load by himself. I gotta say, I love AFSR. I don't know if it's my favorite or not of Shawn's albums...I'd probably say that I don't love it *quite* as much as Fat City and Steady On, but it's still damn brilliant. In fact, all this talk about it makes me wanna go listen to it right now... I love Trouble, Wichita Skyline, The Facts About Jimmy, New Thing Now, If I Were Brave...the rest I'm not as crazy about, but the way I feel about the afore mentioned songs more than makes up for them. (For the record, I'm not saying I don't like the rest of the songs, I merely don't like them as *much*) In fact, Fat City is much the same for me...I really really really love a group of select songs, and the rest I just like. The only album that entrances me for every song is Steady On. God, I wanna have a Shawn fest now. It's actually been awhile since I've listened to one of her albums. I do give them a break from time to time, just so I don't completely wear them out. So there ya go. I just plain love Shawn's music. I think it is in kind of poor taste to discuss whether or not she's breaking up with her husband and having an affair with Jackson Browne...I just don't see how it's our business in any way, shape or form. In response to the person who suggested it may be our business (forgive me for paraphrasing, I'm too lazy to find the exact message) cuz she kind of shares that kind of intimate stuff thru her songs, I do believe it's different for exactly that reason-- she *chooses* what to give away and what not to give away through her songs. She doesn't sing verbatim, "I had an affair with Jackson Browne, now me and hubby are divorcing/Bonnie Raitt's my new girlfriend, now she and hubby are divorcing..." I mean, c'mon, who'd wanna listen to *that*? Well, I guess people who read National Enquirer, but I digress... For the record, though, just cuz she's not wearing her wedding ring all the time doesn't necessarily mean her marraige is on the rocks, imho. I mean, she could've left it in Austin accidently, fer god's sake! Oh, another fact I will share in an attempt to dispell the Jackson rumor is that her hubby and daughter were on the supergroup tour with her. But maybe they were having a threesome, who knows, eh? :) Ahem, how did that soap box get underneath my feet again? (Kicking that aside) Well, at least the list is talking again! Btw, did anyone else see Shawn on celeb jeopardy? Kinda cool. She didn't win, but did pretty well. That's our girl :) ~lindsey, really really looking forward to spring and a new shawn album - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. (For the record, I'm > not saying I don't like the rest of the songs, I merely don't like them as > *much*) I basically agree. I'd say almost every song on that album is great. Except for the ones on the ends - the first two and the last one, which I'd call good but not great - this album is matchless. I even like 84,000 Different Delusions. Best CD I've heard in recent years. Regarding her long dry spells, that just seems to be Shawn's way. I'd rather have seen her working on her next album than go on this tour with Jackson et al. I rhink she has more talent than the rest of them put together.
