Quite a few friends, in fact: Bruce Hornsby on accordion and a whole bunch of famous-type folks on guitars: Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, and some young guy who I guess is named Frankie and is Bruce's cousin? Too bad no one seemed to know Bruce's songs very well except maybe for Carpenter. So we got "Hungry Heart" with no less than eight guitarists plus Garry. Have to say, not to be a sourpuss (actually Carpenter is one of my faorites and I like Colvin a lot too), but the guests didn't add much to the song. Browne and Raitt did a vocal duet, and later Hornsby and Colvin did a duet, with Bonnie joining Raitt at another mike, Bruce and Steven at another, Frankie (?) and Patti at another, and Nils and Carpenter at still another. At the end Bruce and Colvin did a duet for a few seconds. All the guests were ready to get off stage, even itching, it almost seemed. But Bruce said, "We're gonna do one more. Let's not quit yet. Don't go." Finally he managed to get everybody back on stage. "This is for my two favorite redheaded women." And we got, of course, the swing version of "Redheaded Woman" with Garry on standup bass. Before any of the musicians started playing, Bruce sang the first line of the song quickly a cappella, maybe to guide the newbies as to how the song goes. Browne and Hornsby were at one mike, Steven and Raitt at another. "The other Bruce" went down on his knees after Springsteen sang the line, "Until you've been down on your knees." Raitt took the guitar solo on the bridge, then Hornsby played an accordion solo. Bruce sang, "Push come to shove/ Hornsby shove come to push." Pretty silly. Nice lineup at the end on the front of the stage. It probably never will recur. What are the odds? Left to right, it was Springsteen, Browne, Hornsby, Steven, Raitt, Colvin, Carpenter, Scialfa. Hornsby played an accordion solo near the end and it was fun to see Steven and Springsteen EACH holding a mike up to Hornsby's accordion. Bruce S. shouts, "Twist it one more time," and as the song seems to end he introduces the five guests, then they do a quick reprise. Much hugging goes on. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
