I really enjoyed reading them. Living all the way over here in Ireland, I envy you statesiders who can see Shawn regularly. I've been a Shawn fan since 1997 when I heard her more or less by accident in a radio concert. That concert and her intricate lyrics came to mean a lot to me through some personal tragedy over the years that followed. Since then, I've gradually built up a collection of her music including as many live cuts as possible. She's the one artist of whom I can say that there isn't a song she's done that I don't like. But I've never seen her live. And in fact, I only saw her for the first time *ever* last night - singing just one song in a TV programme called "West 54th Street Sessions". Some of you may know it. She sang "Diamond in the Rough" and was accompanied by lead and bass guitarists. The bass guitarist was playing this unusually long guitar. I wonder is he the same bass guitarist I've heard bop-bopping through a great '94 live set for ColRcds Radio Hour. He's some player anyway, practically fitting his own sub-melody into the bass line. It wouldn't be that same Stuart (Stewart?, Steurt?, I dunno) you mention? Interesting to hear Shawn is on-line herself. I wonder would she ever stop by the list? Now, that would be something else... Thanks again Meri. - ----- Original Message ----- From: Meriwether Jones To: A Shawn Post Sent: Friday, August 13, 1999 11:27 PM Subject: [s-r] Wolftrap2-Shawn Anecdotes > Shawn's set was wonderful, just her and Stueart Smith. (I never remember how to spell his name, so forgive me if I got it wrong.) They seemed to be having a genuinely great time up there. Lots of hilarious stage patter. A couple of which follow. (Minus the hilarity, I fear!) Note that all my so-called quotes are actually crude paraphrases salvaged from my fading middle-aged memory. . > So let's see. After playing Sunny as the second song of the set, she said: > .. > "Thank you. We like to get that song over as early in the show as possible. It's a great song, mind you, and we enjoy it. But we also know that some of you are here just to hear that one song. So, you see, we've done it. You can leave now if you want." [much laughter ensues and she plays it out a bit further.] > .. > What else? Oh yeah: Apparently reprising a routine from the last time they played Wolftrap, she and Stueart did a hilarious send-up of Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond singing a duet. I can't remember now if it was "You Don't Send Me Flowers," but they both hit their parodies dead on. Since Neil Diamond is more a stylist than a great singer, he's fairly easy to imitate. But what most surprised me was the parody of Babs. That Shawn Colvin chick really has a great voice! . > Later, she noted that she had at one time been watching way too much TV, which is what "I Want It Back" was written about. She then proceeded to make merciless fun of the reputed acting ability of Tori Spelling, poor girl. Stueart then coughed up a quote from the movie Chinatown, which I'll butcher as follows: "Given enough time, even politicians and whores gain respectability." Ouch!! (Someone who actually knows that line should de-butcher it for us. My apologies to Jack Nicholson or whoever.) . > Responding to a request, Shawn played a short version of "I Don't Want To Live On the Moon," her Sesame Street contribution. Despite having already tuned her guitar weirdly (in preparation for "I Want It Back") she did a cute job with it, funny voices and all. > .. > What else... Oh yeah, of interest to this crowd, she said she's been experimenting with web-surfing lately. In the end, what finally got her on-line was her addiction to checking out homes-for-sale. Realtor.com, etc. She said she also checked out her own site and greatly enjoyed the nude pictures. Heh heh. You know, the ones where they put a celebrity's head on someone else's body... (She wishes!!) > .. > I'll leave to someone else the explanation for why her sets *must* end on time these days... > .. > (Great entry opportunity for all you DC-area lurkers! Damn, i'm such a jealous Earle fan :) I went to see him with the DMcC band a couple of months ago over here in glasgow. he does look different, don't he!!! Bonnie was right about the eyes. i got to see him up close when i met him after the show and those eyes SPARKLE...wow...if only he was about thirty years younger than he is...He has really, really big hands btw...also nice. at the show in glasgow, he made up for leaving us with DMcC for a whole hour (agh) by playing a great solo acoustic set. the man broke all the strings on that martin. no joke. he plays sooo good. he had been wearing black pants, a mustardy coloured shirt and a suit jhacket. he took off the jacket (revealing some beautiful braces) and rolled the sleeves up.... i could go on forever...could it be i have a crush on this man?? scary thought. i've been listening to steve my whole life. my dad played him constantly when i was little and this was the first time i'd seen him live. i had a hard time trying to see through the tears at some points. sad, i know, but i'm the sentimental type, i confess. is this the shawn list? oops.... peace and flowers, jenny* p.s anybosy heard his little sister stacey's album? it's great...i saw her live three times at the cambridge folk fest this summer...she told some great jokes about her bro'. like how to tell the difference between a guy's harp and a girl's harp. actually, i think i was the peson that laughed at that. never mind... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Just got the DVD "Joni Mitchell: Painting With Words and Music" today and it has some wonderful performances on it (and Larry Klein, naturally). Yes, he's certainly not Jaco, but well, you can't have everything - perhaps he was there in spirit. As per DVD, the video quality of the shoot (soundstage) was less than steller, very soft focus, but the performances were great. Features lots of selections from my personal favorite, "Hejira" ("Song for Sharon, Hejira, Amelia, Black Crow). She actually looked like she was having fun! A must for joni-philes. And remember, Shawn said in her Fat City liner notes: "Joni: Me wimp, you master"!
