I haven't written in awhile cuz my modem was fried during a recent lightning storm...rrr. Have to get a new one. In the meantime, I'm checking my mail intermittently from other computers. This five favorite discs thing is tricky, but here's my current list (which will probably have changed again by tomorrow): In no particular order: Fat City-- Shawn Colvin Amplified Heart-- Everything But the Girl (thanx, ck!:) ) Together Alone-- Crowded House Living With Ghosts-- Patty Griffin Court & Spark-- Joni Mitchell - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Earle This is Meri. I don't know much others have reported on last night's show--nor have I seen my own "I'm back!" post from yesterday, so maybe it didn't go through--but here's my take on the Wolftrap show: . Damn, I love Steve Earle. Damn, I love Shawn Colvin. What a pairing! Earle is now clean-shaven, has a fairly short and conservative haircut and looks like he's lost at least 25 pounds. Still gots himself a pot belly, but he's not nearly so large as he has recently been. I thought he looked great! Bonnie thought his eyes were beautiful, a feature I realize is more noticeable with this clean cut look. He looks like an adult now. I guess Del McCoury has been a good influence on that good ole boy! . Earle played a great set, though maybe a tad less energizing than other times I've seen him. No mandolin, for one thing. When he accompanies himself on mandolin the energy level seems to go up real fast. But I loved every minute of his set. He's such a character. I noticed Shawn fans all around me perking up when he played "Someday." Like, "oh, so that's where that song came from!" . Shawn used Steve Earle--a crack he made backstage between their acts--to crack us up while goofing with the interpeters for the deaf. (He had wondered how you sign "doing it," as Shawn so delicately put it.) So after much build-up, she asked the interpreter to demonstrate the sign and then made Earle come on-stage to see for himself. The funny thing for me was that he seemed a little embarrassed, and almost immediately ambled back to the wings. I didn't think that guy was capable of embarrassment! But, to be honest, I may have been too far back to read his body language accurately. . One of the many things I like about Steve Earle is that he tends to stick around for whatever performers follow him in a multi-act show. He stands off to the side and grooves along with the rest of us till the entire line-up has run its course. . All right. Enough about Steve. Part 2 will be pure Shawn. . - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. (I never remember how to spell his name, so forgive me if I got it wrong.) They seemed to be having a genuinely great time up there. Lots of hilarious stage patter. A couple of which follow. (Minus the hilarity, I fear!) Note that all my so-called quotes are actually crude paraphrases salvaged from my fading middle-aged memory. . So let's see. After playing Sunny as the second song of the set, she said: . "Thank you. We like to get that song over as early in the show as possible. It's a great song, mind you, and we enjoy it. But we also know that some of you are here just to hear that one song. So, you see, we've done it. You can leave now if you want." [much laughter ensues and she plays it out a bit further.] . What else? Oh yeah: Apparently reprising a routine from the last time they played Wolftrap, she and Stueart did a hilarious send-up of Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond singing a duet. I can't remember now if it was "You Don't Send Me Flowers," but they both hit their parodies dead on. Since Neil Diamond is more a stylist than a great singer, he's fairly easy to imitate. But what most surprised me was the parody of Babs. That Shawn Colvin chick really has a great voice! . Later, she noted that she had at one time been watching way too much TV, which is what "I Want It Back" was written about. She then proceeded to make merciless fun of the reputed acting ability of Tori Spelling, poor girl. Stueart then coughed up a quote from the movie Chinatown, which I'll butcher as follows: "Given enough time, even politicians and whores gain respectability." Ouch!! (Someone who actually knows that line should de-butcher it for us. My apologies to Jack Nicholson or whoever.) . Responding to a request, Shawn played a short version of "I Don't Want To Live On the Moon," her Sesame Street contribution. Despite having already tuned her guitar weirdly (in preparation for "I Want It Back") she did a cute job with it, funny voices and all. . What else... Oh yeah, of interest to this crowd, she said she's been experimenting with web-surfing lately. In the end, what finally got her on-line was her addiction to checking out homes-for-sale. Realtor.com, etc. She said she also checked out her own site and greatly enjoyed the nude pictures. Heh heh. You know, the ones where they put a celebrity's head on someone else's body... (She wishes!!) . I'll leave to someone else the explanation for why her sets *must* end on time these days... . (Great entry opportunity for all you DC-area lurkers! Or at least the ones whose memory banks are more intact than mine.) . - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
