I saw the movie last night and recognized her voice immediately. It's only a short snippet in the movie (a song called "Never Saw Blue Like That Before" which I think was written by Tom Kimmel). I presume the whole song is on the CD soundtrack. susan mailto:susankrauss@earthlink.net - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Shawn Colvin joins elite Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Los Angeles Times Syndicate By PAUL FREEMAN (August 1, 1999 12:24 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - For a decade, though most people didn't catch on until recently, Shawn Colvin was among our finest singer-songwriters. Now she stands with that elite group literally. Colvin will be touring in August and September as part of an all-star band that includes Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby and David Lindley. They will perform in various combinations, as well as all together. "If I weren't in it, I'd want to go see it," says Colvin, whose "A Few Small Repairs" album shot her to stardom. "These are all heroes of mine. Bonnie was one of the people who inspired me to play guitar. I've never sung with her, so this opportunity really excites me. She's such a kick-a-- singer." Colvin is impressed with Hornsby not only for his vocal ability but also his piano playing. "He can take any song that you hand him and make it unique. I like his approach, his style." As for Browne's gifts, it's the songwriting that dazzles Colvin. "He has such a catalog of amazing songs. I'm really looking forward to performing his material. I've sung with him on stage and had to remind him of his own lyrics." She laughs. "He's forgotten the bridge. He wrote it, and I'm the one who knows it backward and forward. So it'll be fun to remind him of things that he can't remember anymore." She describes Lindley's instrumental contributions as a key element in Browne's sound. "David is a brilliant player. He can make you cry and he can kick a--. He performed on my `Fat City' record. He learns a song so quickly. And he's a lot of fun, kind of a crazy man." These talents will now display a collective chemistry. "It's a bunch of people who have played together intermittently," Colvin explains. "I think the whole thing was Bonnie's idea to try to make a group out of it. I've toured with Jackson, sung duets with Bruce and done benefits with Bonnie. We all know and like each other. This is the kind of opportunity you wait for. "You go into the studio to make a record, and sometimes you get your friends to come in and play for a few hours," she continues. "But it's rare to be able to go on tour together. We're all solo artists, and everybody's got their own careers to look out for, their own schedules, deadlines, managers and record companies. So this is special. It's not necessarily what other people think we ought to be doing. But it's good for the soul." Colvin relishes the notion of being in a band. "It has worked out best for me to be a solo artist, but I've played in bands all my life. The last experience was when I toured with Richard Thompson. I like being a sideman. It's great fun supporting other people. And these are pretty great people I'll be supporting on this tour. In fact, she says, "It'll be more fun than usual, just like being part of Lilith Fair was. It's like an extended family. You give up some control, but it takes some of the pressure off when you're not the only person fronting the band. It'll be fun musically, because it will be fresh for all of us." She expects the tour to provide her with an additional creative spark. "What you want as a musician is to be surprised, caught off guard, pulled in new directions. I just know that's going to happen on this tour. You hear something and it affects you. You're not sure quite how, but, if it's entered your heart and your emotions, chances are it'll get spit back out somewhere." The five accomplished songwriters will draw from their own bodies of work but also play covers. "We've talked about everything from old R&B to bluegrass to contemporary writers that we like," Colvin reports. "I'm sure there will be some interesting surprises." Colvin may try out some songs she has just finished writing. Taking time out for a new baby, Colvin hasn't rushed the follow-up to 1996's smash "A Few Small Repairs." She won Grammys for Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for "Sunny Came Home." The only album she has released since then was "Holiday Songs & Lullabies." But, teaming again with producer/co-writer John Leventhal, she's begun recording a new one. After achieving such lofty success, it was difficult to start writing again. "It was daunting," she admits. "I felt pretty stuck there for a little bit. Prior to `A Few Small Repairs,' I'd done three other records and, on some level, hoped for hit singles. But it just didn't happen. So with `Repairs,' I kind of went in feeling I had nothing to lose. I felt very little pressure. And that worked out real well. "Now there is definitely pressure. But I think we've conquered it. Once you've gotten some new songs under your belt, you're home free, because you get excited about the new songs, and the last record kind of fades for you. I'd love another big hit," she says, "but even if there isn't one on this record, I know I still have a career." Colvin also knows she can count on the support of her core fans, those who have been listening and appreciating her music for 10 years. It took her a long time to reach the mainstream-music audience. But now she can hold her own, popularity-wise, in the company of such stars as Raitt, Browne and Hornsby. "It's pretty incredible," Colvin realizes. "I've idolized these people. Being asked to join this tour is really satisfying, really validating."
