Hi Kids... Took some sick days off from work, and thought i would post a little report on the Chapin Show at the Backyard here in the one and only A-Town a coupla days ago... It was a little rainy on friday morning before the Chapin Show and although the Backyard is an outstanding venue, ain't no venue fun in the rain. But the stars managed to poke thru and although it was way humid, it turned out to be a wonderful evening for the likes of Chapin and Crew and a guest appearance from Queen Shawn. I must admit my ignorance of Chapin's non top 40 songs... i'm really a newcomer to her music... i've had her CDs for years, but tend to listen to only the "hits" and honestly it started out only because of her connection to shawn... bad bad bad, i know. But my Shawn connection only came about because of her association with suzanne vega, so there ya go. I'd never seen Chapin live before... well, not really, except for the telluride workshops in the park last year... (some idiot booked our flights back home from telluride too early, and i missed her main show at the main festival... oh. wait. that was me. dang.) I don't have a setlist from the show because i don't know all the titles, but can tell you that they were in top form and sound... John Jennings quietly running the show, with a brilliant Duke Levine on the guitar. Chapin seemed to be in an especially wonderful mood, which definitely showed through in her perfomance. Twas nice. The audience was a curious mix of cowboys, and college kids, but a great crowd overall. After a few songs, Chapin said, "And i'd like to introduce to you, my best friend, Shawn Colvin." The crowd went wild. God Bless Austin. I think the first song they sang was Come On, Come On... oh lord, i was so excited that i forgot to write it all down. silly me. Mimi?? What else did they sing? Shawn would pop on and off the stage to dance around in the back coming up to Chapin's or Jennings' microphone to add her vocal stylings on songs like "He Thinks He'll Keep Her"... They were laughing and smiling and really just having a blast. The highlight of the evening for me was The Waterskiing Story... Chapin and Shawn took turns telling this really long story about their adventures out on Lake Austin... Apparently earlier in the day, Shawn, "The Aqua Lung" as Chapin affectionately referred to her, had taken Chapin out to teach her how to waterski. Neither of them could hardly stop laughing to tell the story and the audience was loving every bit of it. So, Chapin had a little trouble standing up... it was her first time after all... and after a few "FacePlows" as shawn called them, they switched places, with Chapin, now skipper of the boat, and Aqua Lung following close behind. As Shawn's tow line got shorter and really close to the boat, she decided to let go so Chapin could swing around and pick her up... so Chapin decides, (never having driven this boat before) to get as close as possible so she can pick shawn up easily. Suddenly Shawn is frantically waving her arms to STOP! STOP! Shawn groans as she hears a clunk and grind... the tow rope had wrapped around the propeller. Shawn & Chapin are laughing hysterically at this point. The sound effects that each of them added was classic. Chapin comments on how ill prepared shawn's boat was for such an occaision... no knife to cut with... only a Patty Griffin CD to their name. Shawn apparently does some diving to try and untangle the rope, coming up for air only to disappear again for another try. "I think i can get it!" she gurgles. no luck. Chapin and Shawn reflect that tomorrow's headlines could read, "Carpenter Doesn't Show; Colvin Still Missing." Then some surfer du-u-u-des (or "wake boarders" sez shawn in her best surfer accent...) drift by and lend them a cigarette lighter to try and burn off the rope...somehow this works, and they are able to work off enuff of the rope to get going again just before they drifted ashore. Before their rescuers leave, shawn decides to bum a cigarette from one of the boys in the other boat, and when he hurled the box of Camel thru the air for shawn to catch, it hits the very edge of the boat and flings into the water. Chapin & Shawn mock the surfer boys as they moaned when the cigs make a splash. "Ohhhhhh, du-u-u-u-ude!" The story has a good ending; they make it home, and Chapin cuts the rest of the rope free with her swiss army knife, the crowd cheers and they belt into another song. There were numerous encores; one with the opening band Solas coming out on stage -- i had missed this act, but apparently they were celtic-ish, and quite good. Shawn just danced around in the back having a good ole time. The Diva Song was quite entertaining, with Shawn in the background, pantomiming the lyrics that Chapin sang... They were laffing quite hard, and so was the audience. What a show, what a show. Chapin and Shawn are definitely AWESOME together. I hope they continue to collaborate on the road. I apologize for not knowing the specific songs... i usually write things down, but was just way too into the show. Perhaps Mimi recalls... she was front row and all... :) The moral of my story? Anyone who has a chance to see Chapin and Shawn together should take advantage of it; you will not be sorry. It was one of the best shows i've seen in a while. My next shawn adventure will take me to SouthPark Meadows in Austin for Lilith Fair... it's gonna be hot as crap but hopefully worth it. Thanx to Dave Ring for the telluride update... sure would've loved to have been there. Oh, and while i am babbling... i must take the time to recommend the Felicity Soundtrack.... no chuckling from the disbelievers... i know... another cheesy show with great music... i love the show, but can honestly claim i am actually not addicted to it due to my screwy work schedule. i would be if it were possible. So, i've taken a little precaution in case i got into trouble for this having nothing to do with shawn... Due to the Rules of Degrees of Separation, i can make it relevant to shawn content... The Felicity Theme was produced by none other than the wonderful & talented Larry Klein. Larry sports bass, guitar, and keyboard in this little ditty. This is really a great soundtrack if you are into the unrequited love/pain songs...songs by Remy Zero, and Ivy and Neil Finn blend well together, and it has a couple of classics too, like Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work", and Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood." This is one of the best soundtracks i've run into in a while. Give it a listen, won't you? Ok. I'm done. (c) 1999 - BigHairedBabble, Inc. All Right Reserved. It was weird and I remember a lot more than last time. Well, I remember part of it being for my b-day. I remember cleaning my room, cleaning the kitchen, changing out of my MCC shirt because Shawn might get jealous and think I like Mary Chapin better, which I don't. So, Shawn was doing a chat and somehow the chat was at my house. You know, the computer was at our house she would type the answers people asked her from their computers. Well, Shawn answered some questions, then she got bored. So we go in a white oldsmobile, I don't know whose car it was, It wasn't my car. So we drove around the town, I remember going under a bridge slightly resembling the one on the Ohio/West Virginia border. We ate at a restaurant, not fast food, but a one resembling Planet Hollywood. We stayed out till 2:30 AM, until Shawn had to go back to Texas. Weird.......
