I saw Steve Earle and The Del Mc Coury Band when they were in Minneapolis in March and I didn't even recognize him. He had on a suit and tie, dress shoes and a beard. He told quite a few stories and just gave me a different impression that when I last saw him in a club here in Minneapolis. He'll be performing with Del McCoury and his bluegrass band (not his usual style of music). They'll probably just perform, but if there's any one-on-one with Letterman, look out! In truth, I have trouble imagining Letterman and Earle maintaining any semblance of a conversation with each other. It will surely be a strange pairing if they do. Earle is not what you'd call a linear conversationalist. And Letterman, well god help him, he's Letterman. Now my = No. 1 hero has passed on, in a way that I'm sure he'd have wanted (Oliver Reed) , I'm left with Ms. Shawn Colvin as pre-eminent hero. Shit. No visits this side of the pond for a minimum of another year (at least) from reliable sources. Sunny Stayed Home as it were, Sure, record sales haven't been great, but I'm sure most over here didn't even know there was a UK release of HS&L. So, Shawn's choice or is it down to The Facts About Sony ? Yup, Shawn's a mum now and family come first, but the odd trip can't hurt. Family values or financial ? - At least let us know before I fork out for a ticket to see Shawn, Bonnie et al in the States. I'm far from even financially stable, but some things make the expense worth it, If not the Stay Away Supergroup, then I'll probably sort something out for CSN&Y who have just announced dates - depending on whether I can get a ticket or not. Ho hum. Pissed off as I am, I'm probably going to set up a few SC pages on my site in the near future in Flash3 with the odd downloadable sounclip, including excerpts from the Lyle Lovett "Don't even think about it" story. (until I get told to remove it) In the meantime, looking forward to seeing a few of Shawn's collaborators who can make the trip in the near future : Tony Bennett (It Could Happen To You) this Sunday. James Taylor, both nights next month. Steve Earle this month with The DMB. Also seeing Jill Sobule supporting Loyd Cole this month as well. Hoping that Ms. Kaplansky ventures over here soon as I she he has a new album out. Bit of a whinge, but why not ? I know I'm pretty lucky as far as music is concerned, living in London, but as the poem says water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink. (Well my favo(u)rite brand anyway) I acknowledge there are more starved of Shawn live than I am - Hello OZ!, but I'm a pretty selfish person. Fondly remembering Emmylou's trip over here about a couple of years ago to play a miniscule venue for 3 nights in a row and producing an outstanding performance (as did Buddy Miller & the rest of the band) each night, Hey BH Howareyooooooooooooooooo ? - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. There's life for ya in 25 words or less." this is one of those songs where shawn just blows me away at her grasp of some of the big life issues, the insecurities and questions a lot of us have, the stuff that is at the core. i don't think this is a relationship song, per se, but more of life's observations and ponderings by one very perceptive and poetic artist. ...but that's just my opinion, i could be wrong... heheh. The place was Dingwalls in Camden, next to a canal. He mentioned something about him and the band ending up in said canal the last time he played in Camden. (I think he may have been gigging or recording with The Pogues at the time.) This was the first time I heard Mr Earle come out with the story about him and his ex wife getting re-married because the divorce was just not working out :) In saying that, I think he's split from her again (or she from him) Reminds me of the time when Shawn played a small club in Edinburgh when someone shouted to Larry Klein, asking how his wife ,a certain Ms Joni Mitchell, was. (I'm pretty sure they were getting divorced at the time.) This was the same gig that late in the evening a couple of guys came in and couldn't get over how good a guitarist Steuart Smith was (is)**.They were from a band (Runrig) that Shawn played support for on the English leg of their tour in some big venues a year or so before. Little did they realise the laugh everyone had had at their expense the previous year at King Tut's in Glasgow when Shawn mentioned the band's name. "Sheep Shaggers" was the loud reply from someone in the crowd. This was quickly translated for Shawn who conveyed it to the band who all pissed themselves laughing. Fond memories of Shawn's UK gigs (especially the smaller venues). Those were the days. Excellent news about Lucy. Will book tomorrow (erm I mean today - 2.30 am - time for bed.) ** If you want to see and hear more of Steuart, I recommend the Rosanne Cash video Interiors, especially the track Dance With The Tiger. There is a good studio recorded CD by the same name but the video is of a live gig and is so much better. - -----Original Message----- From: John DeFord To: Neil Hepburn ; small-repairs@smoe.org Date: 05 May 1999 01:46 Subject: Re: [s-r] Steve Earle & Shawn [and now Lucy][NSC, too!] >neil, > >ask and ye shall receive (well, at least one of your requests...) > >Lucy will be on your side of the pond later this very month! >And her new CD (Ten Year Night)is really, really good, and even >includes a Steve Earle cover, from El Corazon, Somewhere Out There... >(just trying like hell to tie something back into the original >discussion, and just.... barely.... made it... whew.) > >Lucy Kaplansky UK Tour Dates, May/June 1999 > >Date Venue City Telephone >==================================================== > >5/25/99 The Adelphi Preston UK 01772-897961 > >5/27/99 The Pheasant Club Sheffield UK 0114-2513014 > >5/28/99 Flyer Bristol UK 01704-539746 > >5/29/99 12 Bar Club London UK 0171-9166989 > >5/30/99 The Ropery Club Sunderland UK 0191-5147171 > >5/31/99 Ramshorn Theatre Glasgow UK 0141-2875511 > >6/1/99 The Errigle Inn Belfast UK 01232-322925 > >6/2/99 Whelans Dublin UK 01-478-0766 > > > >--- Neil Hepburn coerced from his keyboard: >--------8< snip! >8--------- >> >> Hoping that Ms. Kaplansky ventures over here soon >> as I hear she has a new album out. >> > >=== >...........
