Huh. I don't know. I'm sure there are a lot of mediocre songwriters in the world. But I know my brother's music and, believe me, he is a very fine writer. I've always been his harshest critic on the weak songs, but he had *so* many really great ones. (I say "had" because a year ago he cut off his left index and middle fingers on a table saw while working on his house. He has not been writing since -- he's a guitarist -- though I still hope that he will start it up again some day. ) . The feeling I got was that he just never broke into the right circles -- more an issue of his personality that his talent, I would guess. He wouldn't complain, mind you, cuz he did get a few of his songs into play. For example, Travis Tritt's first hit single, and another one that Chet Atkins used as the title song for an album. But he left town, as you advised, because he realized it often takes more than writing great songs. Like they say, "it's not who you know... it's whom." . Anyhow, I'm happy for you KuvrGirl10, that you've found success in Nashville. Perhaps the 10 in your name represents the number of hits you 've written so far? But surely you aren't so far from your early days that you can no longer even imagine what's it like to be on the outside looking in. In any case, you should give Robbie Fulks a listen if you haven't already. (Perhaps you actually know him.) He may not be your cup of tea -- hell, he may be an total asshole! -- but check out his last CD, "Let's Kill Saturday Night," before you write him off completely. . I'm not commenting directly on the other remark aimed at Sarah cuz there's not much point in doing so. Suffice it to say, I don't agree with the sentiment. . - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Let's see. Robbie (who is a great guy, good teacher, and a nicely twisted individual) has had two successful great albums, gets signed to Geffen (I *think* they're a "major label", right?), plays Austin City Limits, tours well, gets lots of industry buzz, etc. I'd say that's pretty damn good for someone who worked outside the traditional N'ville "system". His is some of the most original, entertaining, and fun music to come along in a while. And he plays a mean guitar! Some places can't handle originality, it seems... ;) Dave - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I never said that Nashville is the only place that people pitch songs... all I said was that I lived in Nashville and knew people who were groupies, and that they were scary. How you inferred from that statement that I am naive, Im not sure, and I am not sure why it mattered enough to warrant your slam on a total stranger. But if you feel that you need to boost your ego by acting like one of those "music industry snobs" that I also encountered in Nashville (and they are also in L.A. and New York, if I must qualify this statement because of your nitpicking), then I'm really sorry. Most people I know who have made it as songwriters dont have to brag about their success and slam people for no apparant reason, just because they want to prove that they know something about the industry.
