[Kat McLeod Subject: Re: [s-r] richochet Well, I thought I'd better come out of hiding and give a few thoughts on Richochet, seeing as, from all of Shawn's song, it is probably the one I identify with most. At the end of 1997 I finished at uni, missed out on the one job i really wanted, and wound up spending the year in a job that was okay, but filled with pretty awful people and that just felt like a huge barrier between me and what i wanted to do. I was feeling frustrated, and stuck, even though i knew I would eventually move on, and I found this song to be a real comfort to me. it was one of few true times, i suppose, that i have absolutely identified with a song. Lines like 'i crawled up from the sewer to something that was truer than i intended' and 'looking at my punch card and my mirror' seemed to sum up the spot that i was in, while i did plenty of 'daydreaming in my room,' figuring out where i wanted to be - choosing new destinations. and i'm in journalism too (finally did get that original job...) so there was plenty of 'bruising my friends for more' going on (at least, i felt like there was, and didn't really like it) It really seemed to capture where i was at a particular moment, and though i don't really have those same feelings anymore, i can still go back somewhere when i hear it. 'I Walk Away', by Split Enz (and also Crowded House) did the same things for me when i finished university, and suffered a bit of letdown. And the 'Live 88' version is gorgeous; it's simply, but i think that lets its lyrics say more. Anyway, better go lurk a while longer, Emma. This is my favorite line from the song of the week. I also like the *ping* of the string that signifies the "ricochet". Nice touch. I plan to see Shawn twice this summer. Once in Philly with fellow lister Lisa (hey Lisa!) and again in DC. For gosh sakes Shawn, if you are listening..... play the story already. Sheesh. Take care ya'll! Hey Shawnsters, looks like pollstar updated their Shawn info and she's gonna be a busy gal this summer. (which i gotta guess means it's to support [could it be?] a new album) Here's a link in case my cut and paste arrives askew. -Rob:: http://www.pollstar.com/tour/an.cgi?Artist=Shawn+Colvin&Date_From=&Date_To=&StartSearch.x=36&StartSearch.y=12 04/16/99 Fort WorthTX Main St. Fort Worth Fest. 05/21/99 Philadelphia PA Mann Music Center 06/01/99 Saratoga CA Villa Montalvo Garden 06/02/99 Saratoga CA Villa Montalvo Garden 06/04/99 Sacramento CA Two Rivers Amphitheatre 06/05/99 Santa Barbara CA Santa Barbara Bowl 06/06/99 Los Angeles CA Greek Theatre 06/07/99 San Diego CA Humphrey's 06/15/99 Morrison CO Red Rocks Amphitheatre 06/16/99 Santa Fe NM Paolo Soleri Amph. 06/17/99 Telluride CO Bluegrass Festival 06/18/99 Telluride CO Bluegrass Festival 06/19/99 Telluride CO Bluegrass Festival 06/20/99 Telluride CO Bluegrass Festival 07/10/99 Raleigh NC Museum Of Art 07/11/99 Baltimore MD Artscape 07/14/99 Atlanta GA Chastain Park Amphitheatre 07/28/99 Antioch TN First American Music Center 08/03/99 Highland Park IL Ravinia Festival 08/11/99 Interlochen MIInterlochen Center 09/03/99 Seattle WA Memorial Stadium 09/04/99 Portland OR Rose Garden Amph. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I read somewhere on-line that Shawn's supposed to play some huge microsoft concert in the Bay Area on the 24th or 25th (somewhere around that time) of this month. Anyone know anything about that? Oh, I also love the line "I slap love in the face" from Ricochet. And "I rail at heaven's door" (did I already say that one? oh well.) - --Lindsey - -----Original Message----- From: K. I must concur with Sara and Lindsey on this line, with the addition of the few lines preceding it, as someone who is fascinated by dreams and where they they come from and why.... I wanted to know if dreams would lie You said they would try and I said let them You just let them But I kill dreams in the chase I slap love in the face... Ya know, this whole song is yet another of Shawn's most lyrical masterpieces, now I think about it. And if we're talking about lines we relate to, then I'm quite partial to "I take too many planes" ;) - speaking of which, I too will be catching Shawn twice this summer in CA, perhaps also with fellow travelling lister Lisa (hey Lisa!) and definitely with fellow lister John (hey John! and many thanks to Sir John of DeFord for making it possible) :) But I do think its about time Shawn made a return journey to the great southern land - its been a year and a half since she was last on our fine shores and frankly, these trans-Pacific epics of mine get a little exhausting after a while! Not to mention the fact that I'm rapidly running out of annual leave at work.... ;) Oh and - it would be nice to see Shawn play The Story wouldnt it? Hey I have an idea..... maybe if all of us who get to see her play yell out "PLAY THE STORY!!" really really loud, she'll eventually cave.... what do you think Sara? I think it could work...
