Shawn also sang back-up on Suzanne Vega's European tour back around the time of "Luka." In a 1989-or-so radio interview/performance I have somewhere (I think her first CD was just about to come out) Shawn says the following on this and other subjects: 1) She jumped for the Vega tour opportunity only after they told her it would be Europe. She had a blast, but learned (vicariously) what a huge burden it is to be the star on such a tour -- primarily the media interviews that Suzanne had to do *constantly*. Everyone had a great time except for her. 2) Someone had recently given Shawn a tape of herself performing back in her high school days. She couldn't listen to it alone -- contrary to the interviewer's expectation of exactly the opposite -- cuz she knew it would be so awful. So she held onto to it until she could enlist some friends to hear it with. And awful it was! After a little prodding, she hilariously admits that she started out pretty much as a Joni Mitchell mimic. (As some of you know, I *adore* Joni, but her earliest era was quite little-girlish, with/castles and princes and curlicue drawings and whatnot. *That's* the sound Shawn was mimicking. I'd love to get a copy! heh heh.) 3) Talking about her advertising-jingle career, she is again muy funny. However, I can't remember the wording on the best anectdote, so rather than mess it up, I'll wait till I can find the sucker and get it right. BTW, Lindsey et al, please forgive me for not contributing to the song-of-the-week threads (so far). I've been frantic at work recently. Davis" Subject: [s-r] Shawn and Elvis I was driving along the other day listening to the radio (Sets 102) when I heard the distinctive styling of our girl Shawn. To my surprise it was her doing "Viva Las Vegas". I had never heard this and didn't even know she did it. It was a great version and was certainly not just her doing a remake of Elvis' hit.... very original sounding actually. So what's the story behind this? Is this a new remake and what is it off of? Glen, I know there are others in s-r who can tell you alot more, but Viva and Wichita Skyline (into which she interjects a very slick musical reference to the Jimmy Webb tune of the same name) were favorite's from her Portland, Or. show two years ago. Highly "original" without a doubt and she and the band did a really cool choreographed routine to it as well. Anybody else see this live? -Rob (who probably hasn't been as busy as Meri, but will definately will get around to Ricochet: a fave) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I did see a show where Shawn (with Larry and Steuart) did Viva Las Vegas and Wichita Skyline (with the Jimmy Webb/Wichita Lineman break), geez that was a year and a half ago... that was also the only time I saw her do Shotgun with the Sling Blade imitation. Have I mentioned that I am *so glad* that she is touring this year... :-) - -john (resisting, for now, the urge to count the days until June 1st & 2nd) - --- Rob Love [closet ODB fanatic and famous Oregonian] conveyed: > Glen writes: > > >...To my surprise it was her doing "Viva Las > >Vegas". I'll have to make do with the tales everyone will post (right?) on the Shawn concerts they've seen till then. When I saw her in April of 97, she did the Sling Blade impression, as well as a lovely imitation of a cat trying to cough up a hair ball, right before Shotgun. Subsequent hacks kinda off-set the somber mood of that particular number... :) - --Lindsey, counting the months to early September - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
