Whassup with that?? Maybe we all got too excited about the prospect of Shawn touring again to be able to spend time deep in contemplation of these amazing lyrics... or maybe we were all just too busy drowning in mail overload from the new lucy kaplansky list (heheh) So since I missed the Shotgun discussion altogether (altho everyone else did a good job of pretty much covering anything I would've said anyway), I'm not going to let Polaroids go by without saying how much I love this song - both these songs are right up there in my list of top few absolute favourite Shawn songs ever if you hold a gun to my head and make me choose. First time I heard Polaroids was when I finally found Fat City (just a few years ago) after playing Steady On to death for about 5 years - as much as I still love Steady On, boy was I glad to find another Shawn album ;) From the first line of Polaroids, I was so hooked. I think this song contains easily some of Shawn's best lyrics that she's ever written - from start to finish. Its one of those songs that makes me go "wow.... I wish *I'd* written that". I was even more pleased to read in Performing Songwriter that Shawn says its the song she's most proud of writing (I think that's what she said - words to that effect anyway). I love lines like "or liken me to a shoe..." - lyrics that kinda make you go... what? did she just say "liken me to a SHOE?" Its that kind of thing that can really draw a listener in - if you'll excuse a minor 80s flashback comparison for a second (bear with me) I remember reading once that George Michael (like i said, bear with me) said he was really proud of the line "guilty feet have got no rhythm" in Careless Whisper, just cos who would ever expect the word "feet" to be used in the chorus of a soppy romantic love song? I think that's just one small example of the kind of thing that Shawn has gotten down to a fine art in her songwriting, and is particularly well shown in Polaroids - she keeps you guessing, you never really know where she's going with it, and yet when you get to the end, somehow it all comes together. The second last verse is probably my favourite of the song, particularly the lines: "But I am too young to die, Too old for a lullaby, Too tired for life on the ledge". C'mon now, how many of us have sung along with those lines with resigned feeling on those days when life is just really wearing you out? And the gorgeous hushed suspense of the last verse... wow - love it. And its not even just the lyrics, incredible as I think they are, that make the song - its the whole cadence of the thing, it just totally flows. I'm sure there must be so much more that we can say about this song, since I'm totally hopeless at this kinda stuff and yet I managed to make words fill up a page (always amazes me...) ;), I'd love to hear what y'all have to say about it. How about since it missed last week all together, we keep this song going for another week Lindsey, and take another shot at it... whaddya think? kat (np: polaroids) :) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
