Claypool" Subject: [s-r] shotgun [sotw] shotgun down the avalanche this was my first shawn experience, and you never forget your first... i was driving home from work one day in 1989, stuck in slow traffic on the dumbarton bridge which traverses san francisco bay. i had the radio tuned to kfog (a AAA station before the term was coined) and this song, this unbelievably great, different song came on. shotgun, it was. the music, the voice, the guitars, the everything that this song is. it was one of those rare times, when you just *have* to find whoever did that song and get your hands on it. luckily kfog is good about announcing the songs and since the traffic was horrid as usual, i had plenty of time to scout out a pen and scrap of paper and got shawn's name and stopped at the record store to purchase it on the way home... the rest, as they say, is history. actually, that song was really the beginning of my appreciation of singer/songwriters beyond joni mitchell. as for versions, my favorite is the one on the columbia records radio hour vol. 1, with chapin. especially with headphones on, as jean suggested, this version is stunning. you can hear the gentle foot tapping and the guitar work by both shawn and chapin is excellent. my next favorite would be the album version for john leventhal's brilliant production and guitar work, and shawn's vocal. as far as the lyrics, i didn't really pay that much attention to them until a few years ago, finally making the transition from a 'music only' listener, to now where i am 'music first, lyrics slightly later' type. this certainly rates right up there, since it has all the qualities i like in a song lyric... it's dark, has good imagery, and some very tight turns of phrases... this is classic shawn. - -john (clearly, procrastinating) == ............................. . . Something that's been done on at least one other list has been the compilation of available video footage into tapes that were then distributed to list members only. This was NOT done for profit (although members did reimburse the tape creators for blank tapes and postage, as well as contributing for pizza), and the tapes did not include footage from videos that had been sold for profit. Warning: Such an activity has to be a labor of love and is very time consuming and aggravating, as everyone waiting for the tapes then clamors for their copies. Anyway, it's a thought, although I'm not volunteering as I have no Shawn footage, no VCR, and no TV. No word on when it's coming out. So you know about as much as we do (unless BigHAIR has managed to get any dirt from Lisa :) ). Remember, this is just a rumor, and by no means true. Just something I heard, and thought I'd pass along for its entertainment value. - --Lindsey - -----Original Message----- From: Kelli Corkle To: small-repairs-digest@smoe.org Date: Sunday, February 28, 1999 1:33 PM Subject: [s-r] Shawn's next album >I apologize for asking this question, I'm sure it's been discussed much >already, but I also admit that I'm new. :) Hi. > >What is there to know about Shawn's next album?
