Just something to think about as we await Shawn's next release: Q: How many Internet mail list subscribers does it take to change a light bulb? A: 1,343 - 1 to change the light bulb and to post to the mail list that the light bulb has been changed; 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently; 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs; 27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs; 53 to flame the spell checkers; 41 to correct spelling/grammar flames; 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb"; another 6 to condemn those 6 as anal-retentive; 156 to write to the list administrator about the light bulb discussion and its inappropriateness to this mail list; 109 to post that this list is not about light bulbs and to please take this email exchange to litebulb-l; 203 to demand that cross posting to grammar-l, spelling-l and illuminati-l about changing light bulbs be stopped; 111 to defend the posting to this list saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this mail list; 306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty; 27 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs; 14 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and the post the corrected URL's; 3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this list which makes light bulbs relevant to this list; 33 to link all posts to date, then quote them including all headers and footers and then add "Me too"; 12 to post to the list that they are unsubscribing because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy; 19 to quote the "Me too's" to say "Me three"; 4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ; 44 to ask what is "FAQ"; 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago on Usenet?" 143 to ask "what's Usenet?" - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Has anyone given any more serious thought to putting out that collection of Shawn videos for the mass market? I was in the record store the other day and there was a Rusted Root video available for goodness sakes. I mean no disrespect to that band, but they have made only a minor little blip on the music scene to date. Yet, they already have a video available. What's up with that, when we know from the small-repairs list that many fans would eagerly snap up a copy or two of Shawn's videos. Please get someone to reconsider the thought. Thanks for listening to me. Claypool" Subject: [s-r] sotw-- shotgun Hey everyone. I just wanted to share my views on Shotgun before we have a new SOTW tomorrow (by the way, if anyone has a request of what they'd like the song of the week to be, just let me know. i'll be happy to take suggestions.). So, anyway, Shotgun. I think that this is one of the songs of Shawn's (or anyone's) that best combines lyrics, voice, melody, production, etc. For me, hearing this song is kinda like being transported to another realm of being... I can visualize the world that this song is; it seems to have its own reality. Aside from the transcendental aspects of this song, I really love the guitar riff at the beginning, and the ethereal production. Shawn sings it so hauntingly, it just gives me chills. This is definately one of my very favorite Shawn songs. I hope I explained what I meant to say adequately... i don't think words can do that song justice. I'll be back tomorrow with a new song of the week. Thanks to everyone who participated this first go round. It was great to have some good discussion on Shawn's work. - --Lindsey - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Lamar. When I wasin Ausitn last spring, one of the people I met was a real estate agent. She told me had been trying to sell the house that Shawn and her husband eventually bought. Now since I didn't want to spend time in the pokey for being a stalker, I had the good sense not to ask her exactly where it was. But I got the impression it was in the nice neighborhood over towards Enfield and Mopac. Of course, I could be way off base there. But in any event, Central Market is a sort of an upscale supermarket which has lots of good food and free music in the evenings on weekends (mimi and jean should go see Rubinchic's Orkestra), so I bet Shawn shops there. Of course, when I shopped there I never saw her, shich is probably why I'm still free to visit Austin. I think I did see her in the Continental Club one night back in 92 on my first visit to Austin. This woman looked very much like Shawn Colvin, except that she didn't have black hair. Of course, how did I know that black was not Shawn's natural color? On a slightly different note, Kelly Willis' new album has a couple of songs that she co-wrote with John Leventhal. this week on my radio show, I am featuring Kelly's new album, and am going to play a number of songs by people who wrote songs on Kelly's album. I'm going to play "object of my affection" (John co-wrote that with Shawn and the subdudes, whom I love, play on the song) as well as as Paul Kelly, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, and Butch Handcock doing Paul's "special treatment." Kelly does Paul's "cradle of love" on the album. And for those of you in Austin or with access to the internet, Kelly will be on Lone Star State of Mind on KGSR next friday night, along with her husband Bruce Robison and her good friend Monte Warden. For those of you with realaudio or realplayer capability, you can listen to it as I will by going to http://www.kgsr.com. And speaking of Kelly Willis, I'm listening to Larry Monroe's Segue City on KUT (http://www.kut.org) and he just played Kelly doing a song she co-wrote with Gary Louris of the Jayhawks and Golden Smog. He is into a pick me up theme. This show is really cool-it's on from Midnight-5 AM Central time on Sunday mornings. Oh yeah, the Kelly Willis thing starts at 10 PM Central next Friday, March 5. Enough from Oneonta NY (birthplace of Jerry Jeff Walker, who found fame and fortune while writing songs and doing other things in Austin TX).
