Here is my second-last installment on great CDs you may not have heard of already. . First allow me to append my Paul Kelly recommendations with another starter CD that is easily obtained in the US: "Deeper Water." It's a great album. The title song never fails to bring tears to my eyes -- any parent will likely have the same response -- and many of the other songs rock with the best of them. . Remember: If a CD you want is not in the racks, just ask the store to order it for you. It doesn't take long. This is an especially good practice for those who like to support local indie stores. . OK, on with the list: . 3) Alejandro Escovedo -- "Gravity." I wasn't planning to include this one, but since Carl mentioned Alejandro, I thought I'd name a specific CD. He also has some kind of best-of CD, l seem to recall, which might be as good or better a choice. (However, it might be a "live" best-of.) But I have to say that the one other Escovedo CD I own (With These Hands) was disappointing. Every other song on Gravity is exceptionally good -- the even-numbered songs to be specific! The odd-numbered ones are merely average rock'n'roll tunes. I guess he thought he should vary the tempo and noise level from song to song... I take it his wife (or sister?) died during or just before he made this record? It's really good. . 2) The October Project -- their self-titled CD. I'm seconding Kat here. This now-defunct band produced *beautiful* songs with haunting lead and harmony vocals. (I'm talking music here; I confess I've never really paid much attention to the lyrics!) The lead singer has a very low and unusual voice for a woman. Every time we play this CD while guests are over they *beg* us to borrow it. What more can I say? (Kat: I just ordered their other one. I'm glad you think it's just as good.) . 3) Catie Curtis -- "Truth and Lies" Another second on Kat's list. I imagine more of you have already heard of Catie, but she is easily worth her press. I'd start with this CD. . 4) Ferron -- "Driver." Another gay woman many of you will already have heard of. I was a fan during her first splash in the early '80s ("Testimony," etc.) but then lost track of her or encountered CDs that didn't do much for me. Go buy this one. It's really fine. Jaco-style frettless electric bass throughout. (If you don't already know Ferron, you'll need to give it a few plays before it grows on you, but then you'll be in heaven.) . - -Meri- . - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. My last installment of great CDs you should buy: . 5) Milton Nascimento -- "Sentinela." Wow. What a fantastic disc! Here one of those guys with a very large repetoire of albums -- many of which are mediocre. But when he's "on," there is no more beautiful singer in the world. Milton is a black man from Brazil who blends Brazilian folk with American jazz fusion and a voice straight from heaven. His falsetto is just amazing -- unlike mere mortals, his has all the power and clarity of his normal range. When he goes all the way up the scale you can't even tell where the switch occurs. Since his best stuff is in Portugese, I have no idea what he's singing, which adds to the otherwordly experience, for me at least. When he partners with Fernando Brant as co-writer, as on the above CD, you find yourself wondering if you have died or whether the angels have merely chosen to come visit. Buy this disc! . 6) J.J. Cale -- "Naturally." This goes way back to 1973. Still, I can't help but include it. J.J. is another "legend-not-a-star" and another guy with many mediocre albums crowding out moments of pure genius. Especially if you like tasteful guitar leads and laid-back Oklahoma-style country R&B, a la Leon Russell and others. Not a great singer, no deep meaningful lyrics, but the music has a truly classic "sit on the porch with no shoes in the summertime" feel. This first album is by far his best. It's another CD I have to lend out every time I make the mistake of playing it while guests are within earshot. You've undoubtable heard several of the songs on it covered by other people: Eric Clapton did "After Midnight," (plus "Cocaine" off another JJ album); Poco did "Magnolia;" Lynyrd Skynyrd (sp?) butchered "They Call Me The Breeze," and so on. . If you like this one -- and you will! -- my next JJ choice would be "Okie." It's very short and even more laid-back, but I love that album. The late Freddie King covered "The Same Old Blues" off it, btw. . There is also a 2-disc JJ anthology out there, but unless it has every single song off Naturally and Okie, I would still start with those two. Btw, Mark Knoffler of Dire Straits is one of many guitarists who acknowledge JJ as their primary stylistic influence. It certainly shows in his playing. . That's it for now! . - -Meri- . - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I taped the Oprah thing. Very brief, and she didn't perform (there was some background music, but that was it). Basically, she sent a "video letter" to Oprah from home, which showed her taking care of Callie, singing to her, playing some guitar on her front porch, and talking about how much her life has changed since she became a Mom. Commented about how she always *thought* how much certain things mattered to her (she didn't say what, specifically), but that all dropped by the wayside when she became responsible for another human life. And, of course, she's endlessly entranced in watching her develop, grow, learn. Very sweet. I'm certainly glad she's found some happiness and peace in her life. Hope she doesn't forget about the music!! Ok, the question is only a semi question. But here is why I ask it. This year will be my seventh trip to Telluride, all since the 1993 fest. And Shawn has appeared at every one but last year. Furthermore, I think she has appeared at every Telluride in the 1990s, except for last year. Now Sam Bush, who has played at every Telluride Bluegrass Fest except the first one (this will be his 25th), is known as the King of Telluride. He plays at least a couple of times with various people during the fest. Shawn also plays with lots of people over the course of the weekend. I've seen her do workshops in Elks Park (I'm usually in the first couple of rows) with of course Chapin, but also Emmylou Harris, Jim Lauderdale, and Allison Krauss. On the main stage, besides doing her own shows, she has sung with James Taylor, Chapin, and Lyle Lovett, and probably some others whom I just can't remember right now. So my question is is Shawn the Queen of Telluride? If you are interested in camping, there are a couple of campsites outside of town for which passes go on sale in the middle of March. There are buses which run back and forth. I don't know anything about condos, although some of my friends stay in them. Except for the first year I went, I camp in the Town Park Campsite right next to the concert site. I must emphasize what Big Hair had to say about it getting cold at night. It gets donw into the 30s, so bring a winter coat. It also usually rains at some time during the weekend, so bring good raingear. The sun also usually shines so bring lots of sunscreen. And if you can afford a couple of extra days, get to twon early, because there are a number of places to go hiking. If you don't want to hike up the mountain trails, there is a gondola that will take you up to about 10,500 feet and you can walk some great ski trails. To summarize, if you go to Telluride, be prepared for some great music, a variety of weather, and absolutely a beautiful setting. As for flying, I can't comment. I drive out from upstate NY, take in a bit of the west, and either stop in Austin on the way out or the way back. And speaking of Austin. I just got a new computer, so now I can listen to my favorite radio station any time I want (it is KGSR, 107.1). Friday night is Lone Star State of Mind. They've already played a couple of cuts from the new albums by Kelly Willis and Monte Warden that will be out in the next couple of weeks, and soon up is a live cut from Trish Murphy. If any of you are into alternative country, those are three artists you want to check out. Enough for now, except to tell you that we had both spring and winter today. it was in the mid 60s and sunny today at noon (extremely rare in upstate in Feb), but by 6 PM, it was in the upper 20s and snowing (that is quite common).
