Of course, that Madison, Wisconsin in your e-mail address probably gives it away too. I too count MSN as one of susan's best. In particular, Midwestern Saturday Night is a great song, and if any of you are from the Midwest or live in the midwest and are looking for a song to play for that special someone this Valentine's day weekend, Midwestern Saturday Night is a pretty good place to look. The reason MSN has a special place for me is that back in the fall of 1993 work (I'm a professor) was not going very well, and one day things got so bad that I just got up in the middle of a meeting and left(something said by an administrator set me off). I drove around for about an hour totally depressed. I got home to find that MSN had arrived that day in the mail. Iwent in the house and put it on. The first song, So Heavy, is about not letting the burdens of life get to you too much. It was just what I needed. Work didn't improve that much, but I know better that to hold up the ceiling. I think that Susan's albums are quite good, but they don't compare to a live performance, something that Shawn fans understand perfectly well. Like Shawn, Susan's banter with the audience is both funny and demon- strates a great intellect. and like Shawn, Susan is a great guitar player. She is also a fine piano player. In summary, check out any of Susan Werner's fine albums and catch her live in person. (I've seen her so many times that she is starting to recognize me-any day now the restraining order will be in the mailbox.) (1) Here are a few artists I especially like, whom most of you probably don't already know: 1. Paul Kelly -- be careful cuz there are two guys out there with this name. One is african american, and I have no idea if his music is any good. The one I'm crazy about is a white folk-rocker from Australia. His earlier records are under the name Paul Kelly and the Messengers. (Actually the *original* band name was the Coloured Girls, from Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane," but I guess they feared not everyone would get the joke here in the 'States.) You might remember their song [I've done all the] "Dumb Things," a small hit back in 1989. PK is a *great* songwriter and his band always rocks. His lyrics explore the gamut of the human experience and are chock full of interesting characters. He has about 10 CDs out, though most are hard to get here in the US. As one of his characters sez, while mooching for free beer, "Hey, I'm a legend, not a star!" For starters, I'd recommend any of the following: a) "Songs From the South" (a decent single disc retrospective) b) "Under the Sun" (the one that first seized my ear) c) "Words & Music" (his latest, which boasts two of my all-time favorite songs by any artist. And that's saying a lot, believe me.) All Borders-type megastores carry that last one, if no other. Any music store can quickly order the first and last one. The wonderful Under The Sun might be a little harder to run down. If you buy Words & Music, listen especially closely to "How To Make Gravy" and "It Started With a Kiss." He didn't write "Kiss," but he sure does a fine rendition. In fact, if anyone on this list buys Word & Music and is not satisfied after three careful listens to those two songs, I will buy the disc off you at full price plus shipping, no questions asked. Now you can't beat that with a stick, so get out there right this minute (and take your credit card with you)! That's all for this installment... - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Robbie is one of them thar alt-country rock types. In the past he made at least some effort to fit in with the mainstream country crowd, but he kinda burned those bridges on his second album (not the one I'm recommending) with a bouncy little number about trying to make as a songwriter in Nashville, entitled "Fuck This Town." For anyone who knows anybody who's suffered through such a fate in that fine city (like my own dear brother, a Kerrville Folk Festival "new folk artist" award winner many moons ago) it rings all too hilariously true. The chorus goes: So fuck this town/fuck this town/ fuck it end-to-end/fuck it up and down/can't get noticed -- can't get found -- can't get a cut/ so fuck this town. I love it! Anyhow, Let's Kill Saturday Night is a departure for Fulks, with more diverse musical styles, much deeper songwriting and more edge than his prior stuff. It's a great crossover album, which I highly recommend. Lucinda sings on one song, though not one of my favorites. Overall, it sounds like "Freedy Johnston meets Steve Earle." So if that's not within your preferred listening range, don't buy it. And no, I'm not making a money-guarantee on this one. Oh yeah, my wife sez to warn you that he doesn't have a great singing voice. (1) Meri!! I hereby officially christen you an honorary Australian for that resounding review of our very own Mr Paul Kelly. Paul is indeed a bit of a legend I have to say, and it always amazes me when people such as yourself way over there have even heard of people like him from way down here, let alone like him that much :) If anyone is interested in giving Paul a listen, I agree with Meri that he's definitely worth it, and if you have trouble finding his CDs you can always get them from Greg's Music World online - they're an actual real music store down here and specialise in Australian music - their only fault is that they don't have secure online ordering (mainly cos they dont seem to believe in all the hype surrounding the possibilities of internet credit card fraud - what can I say, we're a laid-back people) but you can always fax or snail mail them. And I've found their service to be exemplary and very friendly. You can find them at http://www.musicworld.com.au/. If you want to know more about Paul Kelly before you go buying anything, he has a very comprehensive web presence at http://www.amws.com.au/pk/. One other small aside about Paul Kelly - it seems to almost be law in this country that anyone who learns to play guitar MUST learn to play To Her Door (from Under The Sun), and then play it *so* much that it drives everyone around them insane. But let it also be said that, even though I've lived through this experience several times, I still love that song. Kat :) (just doing her small part for the Australian music industry) P.S. While we're on the subject, I also concur with the rave that Heidi gave The Whitlams a while back - great band. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Ha! That is very funny. It surprises me not at all. You know, the other thing I love about PK is that he seems like such a decent fellow. I've seen him perform three times now and talked to him very briefly during a bookstore signing (here in Washington DC) and he was the soul of humility and understated humor. My boys love him too. At seven years old, they always recognize his voice and regularly sing a capella versions of "Careless," one of *my* favorite songs to play on guitar. They get the lyrics hilariously wrong, of course, but that just improves the rendition! BTW, I was serious about refunding your all's money if you take a chance on buying Words & Music and don't like it. Shawn and post-Court&Spark Joni Mitchell are the only other performers I feel this strongly about -- and there's no end to the list of friends I would be happy to send the used copies to. - -Meri- . - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I've raved about this woman before but I can't stress her brilliance enough.
