But there weren't any vituperations on Sony so there really was no need for me 'step in'. *Hi KAT* So at long last, I am willing and able to throw in my 16 Pfennigs (roughly equivalent to 10c) concerning my musical favorites...so here we go ............*drumroll*......................... #10. Frank Zappa Utopia #9. Frank Zappa Studio Tan #8. Frank Zappa Live In New York #7. Frank Zappa You Are What You Is #6. Frank Zappa Overnite Sensation #5. Frank Zappa Roxy & Elsewhere #4. Frank Zappa Sheik Yerbouti #3. Frank Zappa Joe's Garage 2 & 3 #2. Frank Zappa Joe's Garage 1 #1. Frank Zappa Tinsel Town Rebellion There is - obviously - a slight emphasis on this kinda weird guy who passed away much too soon, leaving the musical world of today in darkness......BUT there's hope... Some other musicians - not quite as "obnoxious" as Frank - are here to entertain us with their efforts..... Amoung the most favorites for me are: 1. Deacon Blue Raintown 2. Chris Whitley Living With The Law 3. Shawn Colvin Fat City 4. Prince Parade 5. George Michael Faith 6. Michael Jackson Dangerous 7. Reba McEntire Best Of 8. Martika Martika's Kitchen 9. The Wise Guys Du-Du-Duah (A-Cappella-Group from Cologne, Germany) 10. James Taylor Hourglass ....this is in no particular order but depends on time, mood and company I keep.... Quite a range, huh? So Kat, bH and all the others, I am still out here, lurking......... Now playing: An A-Cappella Version of "Tears in heaven" I need to learn for tonight's quartett rehearsal..... BTW: I am still trying to figure out the meaning of "Shotgun down the avalanche". I basically do understand all the words, but when it comes to meaning, I am left in the dark. Anyone willing to help a dumb German out? Please do so and e-mail me privately.....Thanx for your help! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Hope I'm not ostricized for our recent antics :) Anyway, my favorite cds of 98 are as follows, in no particular order: Ani d. --Little Plastic Castle Sinead Lohan-- No Mermaid Talking Heads -- Stop Making Sense (being a young 'un, it's new to me) Shawn- HS&L (just b/c it's shawn, and i listened to it a lot around christmas. definately deserves some mention, as it is a gorgeous cd) Patty Griffin-- Flaming Red Cowboy Junkies-- Miles From Our Home ( i love this cd!) Lucinda Williams-- Car Wheels On A Gravel Road (saw her in August or September for free in Seattle, and would definately recommend her live show) Sarah McLachlan-- The Freedom Sessions (again, new to me) Tori Amos-- from the Choirgirl Hotel Beth Orton-- Trailer Park (i think i bought this one in '98, but i could be mistaken) There ya have it. Kind of an estrogen fest, but that's the way my CD collection goes. Most of the guys I like were established in 97 :) Oh, i have to say it, just because I wanted to include them so bad, and I haven't bought Neil Finn's new album yet. I love Crowded House! Thery're the best (along w/Shawn, etc, of course). Okay, it's out of my system. - --Lindsey btw, has anyone heard 'blues palace' by john gorka? is that shawn singing backup, or just someone who sounds like her? (i got the song off a compilation cd, and it doesn't give credit to the backup vocalist or any of the players.) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. They sure sing sweet together, wherever this was recorded! 2) I got this info from a free service called Late Show News. It comes every week and lists all guests for the various late shows over the subsequent two weeks. Naturally, I use it to scan for music artists. (The one small nuisance is that each edition starts with a long commentary on gossip/trends in late nite show-land. (NSC) I have been corresponding with Larry Ladd who tells me that you and he went to high school with Shawn. Larry has been kind enough to share a few stories with me about what Shawn was like in high school. He has also suggested that I try to reach you if interested in learning more. I'm just a 44 year old male who has been listening to Shawn since "Steady On." I've also had a crush on her for approximately the same amount of time. I have been to a couple of her concerts and have followed her career as closely as possible over the years. I'm not writing a book nor am I attempting to track her down (I'm too old and tired for that!). I not interested in hearing anything you wouldn't be willing to share with the general public. I'm just trying to find out a little bit more about the person behind all of those beautiful songs. Based on what Larry has revealed and what Shawn's songs may reveal about her, I get the impression that she and I may be quite a bit alike in many ways (I'm very moody, but alas, no talent!). If you or anyone else would be willing to share some personal stories with me, I'd sincerely appreciate hearing from you. Again, no dirt. Just your impressions of what she was like when you knew her and any insights that will enable me to know her just a little bit better. Thanks. Vietnam Long Time Coming is due in stores on February 9. Track listings on Vietnam Long Time Coming include "Shut Out The Light" (Bruce Springsteen), "String Of Pearls" (Soul Asylum), "Ricochet In Time" (Shawn Colvin), "Learn To Fly" (Richie Havens) and "I Hear A Call" (Emmylou Harris). The album also showcases six Ben Sidran compositions: "Bamboo," "Going Home," "A Different Drummer," "43 Miles," "Swami Daddy-O," and "The Last Run." Directed by Jerry Blumenthal, Peter Gilbert, and Gordon Quinn (the creative team behind "Hoop Dreams"), "Vietnam Long Time Coming" chronicles an extraordinary cycling event called The Vietnam Challenge, a historic three-day event which took place in January 1998. The Vietnam Challenge was neither a race nor a competition, but rather a chance for disabled and able-bodied veterans to test their limits in a 1200 mile ride from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. The event was designed to let U.S. and Vietnamese participants heal emotional wounds and bring a sense of closure to a war that divided America and scarred millions of people physically and emotionally. The inspiring story of these veterans demonstrates the unifying power of sports and stands as a symbol of global goodwill and reconciliation. Vietnam Long Time Coming is a musical document of the important legacy of this worldwide humanitarian event. == ............................. . . John DeFord . . Yes, she did a duet with Bruce Hornsby on an old CD of his called "A Night on the Town". In fact there's one verse she sings solo. The song is called "Lost Soul". She also sings background on 3 of the others. (This is the CD that has "Across the River" on it. And Jerry Garcia plays lead on that one and one of the others.)
