My fav on the album was "Book & a Cover" Trevor On Fri, 22 Jan 1999 08:24:02 -0600, you wrote: >Anybody like Patty Larkin, Beth Orton or Suzanne Vega? > >Jeff - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Rob replied: But only one artist pops into my mind and that would be Joni Mitchell. And I second (third?) that emotion! Lindsay, take a look at http://www.jonimitchell.com . You will find a ton of information about Joni there. If you have to choose two examples from Joni's catalogue, my suggestions would be Joni's own favorite, Blue (1971), or Court and Spark (1974), which are considered to be her "hit" albums; and then include Hejira (1976), widely considered among Joni's fans (including Shawn, says John, which makes sense) to be her best. However, for social relevance, nothing beats "Woodstock" from Ladies Of The Canyon (1970), which Joni wrote but which CSN&Y popularized. Dog Eat Dog (1985), far and away most Joni fans' LEAST favorite album and perhaps the only "dated" work in her catalogue, is chocked full of biting political commentary. "On prime time crime the victim begs Money is the road to justice And power walks it on crooked legs Prime -- time -- crime Holy hope in the hands of Snakebite evangelists And racketeers And big wig financiers" -- from the song Dog Eat Dog The only problems I can see with comparing the two artists are these: Joni has been a huge influence upon Shawn -- but in the "folk" genre, there probably aren't many artists over whom Joni has not has an influence. Your teacher might be looking for a comparison of different styles of rock music; in that case, do Shawn and The Beatles.
