Are you telling me you don't at least lurk there anymore? To all of you who are Joni Mitchell fans: I'm really joking in the above paragraph; the Joni list is good and if you want to joni -- oops, I mean join - -- or just look up Joni stuff check out these web sites: www.jonimitchell.com, and www.jmdl.com. Hope that wasn't too horrible a breach of n'ettiquette, mentioning another performer's web sites on this list! (Mostly NSC) Is anyone here going to Woodstock (the real deal in at Yasgur's Farm in Bethel, NY, not the rip off in Saugerties) this year? It's the 30th anniversary and although I haven't heard a thing about who might be playing, I'm crossing my fingers that the line up will include Shawn (as well as Joni, who played for the first time ever last year). Last year's festival was three days long, although it wasn't a continuous concert like the fabled days of 1969. I attended Saturday's show, which began about 10:30 am and lasted until around 7:30 pm. I was able to connect with about 25 people from the Joni list, which was way cool. The music was incredible, although I will say that the vision of a bunch of wannabe-hippies turned yuppies sans hallucinogens was not necessarily a pretty sight ... I recently read somewhere that this year's festival is not supposed to include "three timers." Perhaps we should lobby the promoters and beg and plead and harass until they put Shawn on the list! No, no! I've got my own bag of tricks, which I share with a number of other mailing lists (a number which varies every week it seems). In time, I will either burn out my own welcome (it happens!), or, quite possibly become so attached to this list and its family that you won't be able to beat me off (ouch!) with a stick (whew!). Away from the arrogance and on to my self-deprecating salutation. My name is Sean Storm; am a former Southern California product, living the country bumpkin life in Cameron Park, CA. (Hello Larry of Rancho!--You can reach me at the Sacramento Bee :-) ) The aforementioned moniker is to illustrate my obvious limitations--I'm a self-absorbed approval seeker that, even at an altitude of 2,200 ft, still requires a leg-up before pontificating. Are you a Shawn Colvin fan or just some poseur getting his jollies at other people's expense? Well...um...BOTH! But yes, I certainly DO like Ms. Colvin though I must confess that I only own A FEW SMALL REPAIRS. Do not fret--being on this list should illustrate a devout fondness for Shawn. I love her songwriting ("Trouble" being my favorite off AFSR) and I found her performance on PBS Sessions mesmerizing. I videotaped that show last year and taught myself how to play that whole set on my guitar (capo's are so wonderful!). In fact, I think the version of "You and The Mona Lisa" from that show is superior to the album. The limited instrumentation for that arrangement makes it stronger for me. God, I LOVE that song! Spencer and a couple other listees mentioned Neil Finn. Well, I reside on the Crowded House mailing list (though I think they want to evict me!) and have been a Split Enz fan since 8th grade (1981). I am well aware that Shawn has a certain passion for Mr. Finn (would like to know what listees think of the Colvin/Finn b-side of "Sunny Came Home"--I haven't heard it! :-( ). The Austin performance of Neil with Shawn got wonderful praise over on the TITM (CH list!)--I didn't even go and I wrote a piece to the list that of all those Neil and Friends gigs, the Shawn gig would of been the one to see (for me anyway! More than Eddie's!). Spencer, I'm going to post over there to get you the set list from that show, but I do remember that one of the songs they did together was "She Goes On" (from CH WOODFACE album). In closing, I submit that when I first joined, I was inundated with so many posts from my other lists that I decided to unsubscribe from small-repairs. A technical problem developed and I had to email Mike Sampson for assistance in getting me off of it. Your list manager thwarted my plans by being so polite and hospitable that I reconsidered staying here. In other words, if you don't like me being here already.....you know who to blame :-)! For my community college music class, we have to compare any two musical artists (preferably from the rock arena)-- their musical styles, social influence, etc. I know I want to do Shawn, but I can't decide who to compare her with (as she is, after all, incomparable in her greatness). I was thinking of maybe Lucinda Williams, as she is around Shawn's age (a little older, I think), and also just released her "major" record, Car Wheels on A Gravel Road. Don't know if there are many Lucinda fans on this list, but I was just hoping for some input as to whether it's a good match or not. In addition to the discs rob mentioned, i think you may want to pay particular attention to 'hejira', which went largely unheralded, but shawn has mentioned this as her favorite joni disc (and i happen to agree, btw, that it is a masterpiece). shawn has also remarked that the one song by someone else that she wish she had written is joni's 'amelia', from the hejira disc. Check out these lyrics and see why... AMELIA I was driving across the burning desert When I spotted six jet planes Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain It was the hexagram of the heavens it was the strings of my guitar Amelia, it was just a false alarm The drone of flying engines Is a song so wild and blue It scrambles time and seasons if it gets thru to you Then your life becomes a travelogue Of picture-post-card-charms Amelia, it was just a false alarm People will tell you where they've gone They'll tell you where to go But till you get there yourself you never really know Where some have found their paradise Other's just come to harm Oh Amelia, it was just a false alarm I wish that he was here tonight It's so hard to obey His sad request of me to kindly stay away So this is how I hide the hurt As the road leads cursed and charmed I tell Amelia, it was just a false alarm A ghost of aviation She was swallowed by the sky Or by the sea, like me she had a dream to fly Like Icarus ascending On beautiful foolish arms Amelia, it was just a false alarm Maybe I've never really loved I guess that is the truth I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude And looking down on everything I crashed into his arms Amelia, it was just a false alarm I pulled into the Cactus Tree Motel To shower off the dust And I slept on the strange pillows of my wanderlust I dreamed of 747s Over geometric farms Dreams, Amelia, dreams and false alarms - ---end great, great stuff. btw, i also highly recommend joni's double live 'shadows and light'. - -john == ............................. . .
