(Meri and I are acquainted through another music mailing list, although I haven't seen him around there in awhile.) I'm Lori, I live in San Antonio (TX), and I've been into Shawn's music since "Steady On" was released. Loved that single, but was literally stopped in my tracks by "Diamond In The Rough" on VH-1 back in 1990. Bought the CD immediately after hearing that song, and I've been a diehard fan ever since. Own everything except the latest yuletide effort, mainly because I'm not much for the holiday gig, although I may reconsider and buy it yet. I've seen Shawn in concert three times: First in Houston in a very small venue (the Tower Theatre?) in 1993; wish I could remember the names of the band members but I was too mesmerized by Shawn (who is so amuzing in person) to really care; Next at Austin Music Hall in 1995 with Larry Klein on acoustic bass and Stuart Smith on electric lead, where I had the good fortune to be in the front row, center stage (!); And most recently at the Empire Theatre in San Antonio, where Shawn played two nights as the grand opening performer for the theatre, which holds only 800. She played a solo acoustic set which was superb, but it helped a great deal if you were already a fan and knew her lyrics. Most of the folks in the audience seemed to know some of the songs from "A Few Small Repairs," but little else (too bad for them). As many of you surely know, Shawn makes her home in Austin, which is only about 80 miles from where I live. I don't get up there too often, but it's a lovely city. Haven't had the good fortune to pass Shawn on the sidewalk or anything, but one can always hope ... Glad to be making y'all's acquaintance! I got lulled into distraction, paid more attention to my Aimee Mann list e-mails, and then boom --- Dred appears. And all you guys took the good comments, left nothing for me to say. At least I know what to do the next time the list dies down. BTW - What did SC play when she did the Neil Finn show? I assume "Four Seasons In one Day." I saw Neil in NYC, but no special guest, I was disappointed. Man's got to accept his weakness'. How about people list their favorite musicians and such, maybe we can expand this listing beyond just Shawn, that way we can always keep the thread going. I don't feel I know anyone here and this would be a good way to get to know who's who. Here we go, I'll start: My favorites would be - Michael Penn Aimee Mann Elliot Smith Barenaked Ladies (and I've been with them since the Gordon tour!!!) R.E.M. Sarah Mclachlan and for posterity Throwing Muses, Bettie Seveert, and Ani Difranco. There you go. That's me. How about you? I've been on this list for a few weeks now, but haven't had the time to post or read all the messages! Anyway, I'm Vivy from sunny California :) I've been an admirer of Shawn Colvin's music ever since someone gave me a copy of "Fat City" that they didn't want. I think it's insane that someone would get rid of such a lovely album, but it was good for me! Other artists I love listening to are Leonard Cohen, Neil Finn, Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, David Bowie, Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Beck, etc. Rather odd mix but that's just me... About the age thing, I'm 21. Cheers!
