I don't know jack about this Dred guy in particular, but in general I have found the wisest course is simply to *ignore* such folk -- as in let them eat silence. Consciously or otherwise, there are people who flame-bait listservs in order to experience the high that comes with reading the responses. Any of us who has sent an irritated post to a listserv -- and yes I regret that, while caught up the heat of things, I have done so on other lists -- knows the excitement of waiting to see how people respond. It may be more dread (heh heh) than joy, but it's still a high. They *want* us to call them names and speculate on their age and whatnot. Of course, a little flame war every now and then can be a lot of fun, so long as no one takes it too seriously! While we're on the topic, I really think Shawn sucks. If it turns out to be another recording of lullabies or a soundtrack for Barney, I guess we'll have to start looking for Shawn's successor. Sheryl Crow perhaps? Today I was listening to an interview on the radio (WFUV) with Tom Rush, who has come out of the woods of Wyoming to New York City for some concerts in the area. He mentioned that SONY will be coming out with an anthology of his work this year. There will be one new song, already recorded, called "The River Song," produced by John Leventhal, with Shawn Colvin and Marc Cohn singing backup. Apparently Shawn used to open for Tom and he has always tried to give outstanding up and coming artists a chance to show their stuff. For those who don't know his work, the forthcoming anthology (1 CD of 16 or 17 songs) ought to be a good one to pick up. One of my hobbies is amateur (ham) radio and from time to time we experience deliberate interference. The best way to handle it is to IGNORE, IGNORE and IGNORE. Same thing with Mr. Dred. Don't even give him the satisfaction of an acknowlegement. We must have played the CD 20 times - plus viewing her Disney TV hostess duties. The Road to Bethlehem is my favorite - with classic Shawn acoustic guitar and a country rock feel to it. Great version. Christmas time is Here was very tasty as well. I thought Shawn's voice was generally in fine form throughout. I thought the laid back, tasteful feel of the record was very classy and will allow it to be on music shelves for many holiday seasons to come. Having said that, I agree that a true test of Shawn's progress as a musician will be her next original album. My opinion is that the new baby will only add some fresh songwriting angles to a very talented lyricist's arsenal. Her challenge is more likely to be the pressure to follow up a Song/Record of the year single. That has got to be a tough task indeed. Looking forward to hearing Shawn live in '99.
