I'm working on a post of my own about "Kill the Messenger" but it'll take a while as other songs from _Fat City_ figure into the (my) intrepretation. The rest of the post is severely off topic...you have been warned :). >NP: "The Wheel" - Rosanne Cash. Many Shawn fans would likely love this >recording. Steuart Smith plays on a few cuts, and it was produced by John >Leventhal (who left Our Miss Shawn, only to marry Rosanne! It's a soap >opera, I tell you). Anyway, give it a listen! This will be a test of who the *true* BNL fans are on this list (not that this is a BNL list, but that's beside the point)...which BNL band member is currently dating (and has for about the past two years) Roseanne Cash's personal assistant? A prize to go to anyone who is able to answer it without using process of elimination. (Rob, you can participate, but you can't win a prize, as I've already given you the aforementioned prize :) What does it say about me that not only do I know this stuff, but I have met said personal assistant? And some serious off topic stuff... I'm off to Toronto on Thursday morning to see my boys. I'll see them in concert at Toronto's Massey Hall on Thursday and Friday nights, followed by Jann Arden on Saturday (if tickets come through). From then on, I'll be hanging with family and friends. If we have any list members in the Toronto area, email me, we'll do lunch! I will once again be doing the BNL holiday tour this year. Unfortunately, I'll only be able to make two dates this year (DC on Dec 30th and Philly on 31st). I had planned to do all five dates again this year, but I'm saving up my money and vacation time for a trip to Scotland in the spring to visit boy-with-romantic-potential who is studying there for a year. Okay, it's now 3:48am my time and being that I have to be at work at 8:30am, I'm going to go :). hug hug, rox ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roxanne Finch rdfinch@mindspring.com http://www.unc.edu/~roxfinch/ "I hate the Spice Girls, because I just don't think they've got anything to say. Hey Repairers, I've been scouring for even more info on KTM than I already had, so here is all of what I gathered. Obviously the best person to tell us would be Shawn herself, and she has done so. The following excerpt comes from an article in the September/October 1993 edition of The Performing Songwriter with Shawn on the cover and the title "Shawn Colvin Welcomes You Into Her World". I recommend checking it out, it's very informative. You can get the whole article from the Shawn's Sony site [ http://www.shawncolvin.com ] in the 'Reading Room'. :::begin excerpt::: What is the background of "Kill The Messenger"? It's about Jane Siberry from Toronto. I went to see a concert of hers at The Bottom Line and it was one of the best shows that I've ever seen. She's a great woman and performer - a bit of a Peter Pan and a bit of a seductress and has the great ability to combine whimsy and compassion. She's quirky but accessible. And her show was theatrical in a very accessible, warm, wonderful way. I walked out of that show going, "Well, I should just hang it up." And that's really great for an artist to feel (laughs), it really is - it pushes you. On her record called The Walking she thanked her songs for being there. You know, for just always being there. And "Kill The Messenger" is kind of about writer's block, and it's a sibling of "The Story." It's about feeling pulled down and used by people. It's just somewhat of a bitter song. And somewhat of a plaintive song about wanting to feel the wonderful feelings of clarity and forgiveness when you're at the best of your human nature instead of your worst, you know. Your worst being full of envy or hatred or greed or self pity. And I used her much like I did my sister in "The Story" to just sort of be a character to appeal to and in this case one that could sort of understand my plight and maybe harness the muse more easily than I. ::::end of excerpt:::: So, there you have it. For those who don't know about Jane. She is a terrific artist, with a broad range of styles that range from arty & challenging to the very accessible. She was on a segment of Sessions at West 54th last season and has a track on the Best of Sesions DVD (which is *excellent*, IMHO), as does Shawn (*most excellent* Diamond in the Rough with a great vocal by Shawn and a burning solo by Steuart. Shawn opened her set on Sessions with KTM, BTW...). Anyway, Jane Siberry has a cool website at http://www.sheeba.ca/ I'm really glad to hear the KTM has struck a nerve and is more popular than I thought. Someone mentioned how visual they thought the song was, I couldn't agree more, it's almost like a fever dream in parts of it. You can almost smell the rain hitting the fields for the 'bruise colored clouds'. The mysterious lines 'In the shadow hymn of the scratchman' and 'To the shibboleth of Shadowland' somehow make me think of lost characters from Stephen King's 'The Stand'... Actually, I think they represent those dark recesses of the mind, the unconcious way we *just know* things. But that's just me.... I once heard that KTM was the missing bH's favorite Shawn song, but maybe not... it was either KTM or the Sear's tire commercial, I'm not sure which.... :-) - -john == ............................. . . No connection whatsoever, and they really couldn't be more different. Coincidentally (or not, you decide! *sinister laugh*), they were written about the same timeframe. A lot of Dar fans have mistakenly ordered WIWAB the *album* thinking they were getting the Dar product, which is the song from "The Honesty Room" (a fantastic record as well). Whoops. WIWAB by Jane is an incredible aural journey about love, death, spirituality, angels - you name it. It's quite varied musically, with up-tempo almost rock-like anthems as well as exquisitely beautiful tone poems. The whole thing has this ethereal, aural texture to it that speaks of none other then Brian Eno, who produced it. (U2: Unforgettable fire) There's also quite a lot of jazz and improvisation in Jane's music, but that's featured more prominently on her "Maria" release (akin to Joni's experiments with "Mingus", perhaps?). Lili inquired about more Jane info. Surf over to her website: http://www.sheeba.ca/ where there's EVERYTHING you'd want to know about Jane. Check out "Tunderland" which is a message board where kids (or us big kids) can leave questions for Jane's BIG dog, Tunder. Her responses are quite amusing, as are all the newsletters. She runs the whole business herself, amazing. And being this time of year, I'd highly recommend a double-live CD that Jane released last year called "Child", from a concert performed at the Bottom Line in NYC. Lots of musicians, horns, etc. doing some of her songs, but also some standards, and poetry I wonder if Jane and Shawn have ever met, and what Jane thinks of "Kill the Messenger"....... Dave P.S. One more "Kill the Messenger" trivia note: John Wesley Harding, another favorite, has a song called "Kill the Messenger" from his "Why We Fight" release. Catch him live sometime -- he has hilarious stage patter. It will air twice each day, at 10:00 am EST -10:30 am EST, and again at 4:00 pm EST - 4:30 pm EST. It might be wise to tape both shows on Tuesday and check the tape Tuesday night, if Shawn's not on that day, then tape them again on Wednesday. Thanks to Lisa for the updates.
