Wow, amazing that you could articulate what I have always subconsciously known about my own reaction to music, yet never really thought alot about. I probably listen 15 to 20 times to a song if the tune and the singing and the instrumentation really grab me, and the words; while important are secondary. Only then will I sit down with the liner notes. But, on the other hand if the words strike me right away as being trite; I can't get past that either in order to listen even to brilliant music. Right on jdef! The whole package has just got to be there for me too. Hey list people, has anyone picked up the new Jewell. I'm debating it and would be interested in how you feel about the purchase. Send privately if reluctant to post NSC: biggcat@webtv.net PS: John, personally, I'd be interested in having you post your interpretation of the Kill the Messenger lyrics. I have really enjoyed hearing from so many new posters what there feelings are and why. I'll keep hearing Kill the Messanger a little bit differently every time. - -Rob <(°_°)> **So I said: "Tori, what kind of guitar sound do you want here?" And I swear she said, "An unshaven Moroccan yourt spice." I said, "OK- that's just what I was planning on doing." -Dave Navarro (of the Red Hot Chile Peppers, on recording with Tori Amos) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. This was a stripped down show with I just her and Larry Klein, and I believe a drummer, I can't remember (if anyone out there can, remind me) All I do remember is that her doing "Kill the messenger" was like a religous experience. By far my favorite song she does live. But...about 3 or 4 years ago I saw her at WXPN Singer/Songwriter festival where she was a headliner. The Subdudes were also there, so I got to see her do "Object of my affection" and "Climb on (A back that's strong)" with them. It was fantastic. I have seen Shawn about 3 times since then, and have yet to see her do "Climb On" again; I'm dying for her to do that one live. P.S. - A friend and I are seeing Neil Finn on monday in NYC. Can't wait. Rumor is that Lou Reed will be there. Fingers crossed. That would seem to fit the rest of that verse pretty well. - ------------------------------- From Polar Cold: well, i think "She didn't believe in transcedence" means that she does not believe in God anymore. as wat we always say "don't worry , god will help u." but just look at the lyrics......did god help Sunny.......? That fits the dictionary definition of transecndence pretty well - something beyond ordinary experience. - ------------------------------ Fron lili4luv3: My opinion is that she didn't believe in transcendence means that she didn't believe in transcending (overlooking, going BEYOND) the matter. She wasn't a spiritualist who believed she could create her own reality without hurting the reality of others. So she sticks to conventional reality, right? Even if it means she's a pyromaniac now. And this comes pretty close to tying the other two explanations together. Now, what does it mean, "Dry is good and wind is better"? Something about hanging out the laundry, maybe? If someone asked me to choose the most hopeful lyric, I'd pick the final lines from "Something to Believe In". There will always be stars in the wind Little lines on your face when you grin When it looks like you've done it again And you just don't know where to begin There will always be something to believe in (makes you think perhaps transendence is possible after all...)
