You mean we have to *pick* favorite lines from Shawn songs? C'mon, that's just too rough (you know, like a diamond? ;) From STEADY ON: I'd have to second the lines already mentioned from "Cry Like an Angel". I'd also quote almost all of "The Story", but my favorite lines are the following verse: Well our father he married our mother too young And he took on a world like a fortunate son But in the cellar downstairs, waiting for the bomb scare He would hide from us under the kitchen. Where she simmered so soft with her weapons of tin And like so many suppers, she just gave us to him And he never did guess, in her cast iron dress She was burning beyond recognition... Sometimes I feel so reckless and wild Sometimes I feel like a motherless child I gave nobody life, I am nobody's wife And I seem to be nobody's daughter. OUCH. Also, the last verse of "In the Dead of the Night": A bead of sweat runs down my arm And I drink it from my skin It is the most real thing that I feel It is communion Bless the meek Heal the sick Protect the weak In the dead of the night Love the way she sings the word "communion". Sounds like that prayer that goes up in the middle of the night when one is really depressed. (Don't ask.) From AFSR, I'd go with my favorite cut, "Trouble": You know it's really hard to make your peace. So give me some credit for the hell I've paid. This world's a blessing and a beast everyday. You don't have to drag me down, I descend. As an aside, pick up the Lilith Fair CD, if only for Shawn's cut of "Trouble". I never cared for the album version, seemed too produced. I was lucky enough to hear her play it live first (nearly drowned out by a torrential downpour - Shawn won, naturally), and it just grabbed me by the cajones instantly. The Lilith cut really caught me off guard with its energy. You can hear her blistering guitar-work, true vitriol in her voice, and great support by Steuart & Larry Klein. It scorches. From FAT CITY, I'd have to pick the lines on John DeFord's sig (my fave Shawn song of all, "Kill the Messenger".) >............................. >. . John DeFord . . "Sometimes the beauty of life > . mailto:jdef@yahoo.com . Hits like lightning >. . ..................... . . Washing everything clear" >... ............... ... --Shawn Colvin Especially, the second verse: See Jane, something's gone dead. Inside my head, there's nothing but fear. Oh Jane, the rivers of grief, the tears of relief Seem ages from here. See a pattern developing here? Yikes. Perhaps these sound like "downer" selections for favorite lines, but that's exactly what I love about Shawn's writing. It's not obtuse, or trying to be overly witty, or pretentiously "artsy". It's real. It hits home, in the gut. (I'm guess I'm thinking more of her earlier, more confessional writing...) As a person who has wrestled with panic/anxiety disorder for 8 years, I find these lyrics actually comforting, rather than depressing. To know that others have gone through difficulties too, and have had to acknowledge and deal with the pain of working through them. It's freeing, in a way.....simply acknowledging it. I was lucky enough to have discovered Shawn at a time when things felt like they were literally going to hell, and "Steady On" definitely kept me company during the "rugged road" back to some semblance of a normal life. Well, enough "confessional" out of me... Hey, does anyone else think that the beginning of two tunes on the new Holiday CD ("Windy Nights", and "Evening is a Little Boy/The Night Will Never Stay") sound alike, but also like the verse of "Orion in the Sky"? If you've played them from the songbooks, the hammer-ons and sus chords sound very similar to me... My name's Dan, I'm 25 and have been listening to Shawn since I was in high school. I recently saw her live for the third time. However, it was the first solo/acoustic gig that I'd seen. It was, by far, my favorite Shawn Colvin show yet. She really triumphs when it's just her and the audience. If you'd like to hear more about the concert, please feel free to stop by my website at http://www.angelfire.com/ga/foolishlove/ I look forward to hearing the thoughts of other members of this list. It has served to inspire and focus my thoughts when I'm working on a piece of music and am wondering what to do or where to go with it and what the real point of creating music is for in the first place... It is a rare and wonderful thing to hear the work of an artist who has the ability and skill to portray their experiences in such a way that we are moved to say, "Yeah, I've felt that way too." Shawn does this for me. Some others do too, most notably Jonatha Brooke and Lucy Kaplansky. For me, I am a 'music first' person. I listen the first few times without really analyzing the words. It's only later do I read the lyrics and evaluate what they mean to me personally. Of course, with some songs this is a very short process, like with 'Trouble', for example. I need the music and the words to get the full impact. The words do have a certain power, and sometimes can stand on their own, but I still believe that all the elements working together is what makes for a transcendent experience. I need the music, I need Shawn's voice, and I need her telling me her stories. Think of the song 'Everybody Hurts' by REM. The lyrics are extremely simple, but the song has real impact given the chords and melody and the emotion that Michael Stipe gives to his performance. But, with all that said, I will say that my favorite Shawn songs also have my favorite Shawn lyrics. And she has helped me tremendously through some very harrowing times over the years, precisely because she has let me know, through her music, that I'm not alone. That others have gone through these difficult times, and they have survived, and maybe I will too. Specifically, here are just a few of my favorite passages... Trouble- This whole song just blows me away... I agree with Dave, that the version on the Lillith CD is great, but I also really loved her solo version at the Warfield in SF this past April. She played it very delicately and slowed down just a bit and sang it with a world-weary style (probably because she was, at the time, 6+ mos. pregnant and still touring) that revealed so much more... I swear you look like you're in jail And all at once you're halfway out the door One foot dancing, one foot nailed To the floor So come on baby let me show you how The less you know the more I comprehend You don't have to drag me down I descend Shotgun Down the Avalanche- This is the song that made me go out and get Steady On, way back in '89. Oh, and it was the sound that hooked me... Sometimes you make me lose my will to live And just become a beacon for your soul But the past is stronger than my will to forgive Forgive you or myself, I don't know Kill The Messenger- My all-time favorite. In my opinion, it is impossible to play this song too loudly. Sometimes the beauty of life Hits like lightning washing everything clear And these dimmers of doubt flicker fade out and disappear Jane they'll whisper your name And you won't feel the chains And you won't see the moss Oh, Jane there's an art to the game The aesthetics of love The athletics of loss One of the things that is very cool about these and many more of Shawn's songs is the interpretation is left to the ear of the beholder. It is such a personal experience that sometimes it doesn't really matter what Shawn was writing about, it matters more how it moves me personally. there is a song by Clannad on the CD Magical Ring called Ta Me Mo Shui, sung in Gaelic, and of which I have no understanding. It is still one of the most beautiful, meaningful songs I've ever heard in my life. She could be reciting a recipe for Haggis or reading a plumbers manual for all I know. Frankly, at this point, I really don't want to know. Funny thing, I've been writing this mail over the past few hours, and I just this second removed a section that tells the story about Shawn and Kill The Messenger. I did that not to keep a secret from you, but to preserve Rob's (and maybe others too) personal interpretation of it. The story is in the list archive, if you want to search for it, or you can email me privately. Shawn's music does inspire me, I listen to it for many reasons. I don't save it for when I'm sad or mad or depressed, but it works magic when I'm in those spaces. There are many more of her songs that hold a special place for me than those I've written about above, and I think that's probably true of most of us. Have a great weekend everyone. - -john == ............................. . . John DeFord . . "Sometimes the beauty of life . mailto:jdef@yahoo.com . Hits like lightning . . ..................... . .
