During the talk about the new album and how it shouldn't be judged against Shawn's others, I was thinking about that very thing and what was it about "Fat City" that hooked me in the first place. There are several lines I could pull out from that album, but I'll stick with the depressives' favorite song, "Monopoly." "And people say, 'Well, you know, you got a song out of it.'" Like that's any consolation. I totally grok the tone Shawn puts into that line. I'm an artist, I like to draw. I know how it is to pour oneself into something, to use feelings (good AND bad) as inspiration. In the end, you've got this thing, a drawing or a song, but frankly its still just a thing. Maybe you've sorted things out a bit, but the feelings are still there. Thanks for nothing. Lest I get too brooding, I also want to point out that Shawn can write some funny lyrics. Why, in the very same song, she sings: "Same old tongue-in-cheek, regretting that both are mine." It doens't make me laugh, but that's friggin' hilarious. That's part of what does it for me, Mark H No haiku this time. I'm just too tired tonight. Sorry about that. Most of her songs touch me in a very particular way. Some of them apply to my life, some don't, but those that don't help me see life in another light and/or reflect on it. My favorite Shawn song in Shotgun Down the Avalanche (and it is Steady On my favorite CD). But since some of you have already commented on Shotgun, I'll say that one of my favorite Shawn lyrics is the following: "So look homeward baby Keep your eyes on the sky They will never forgive you So don't ask them to try This is your party, I know it's not your ideal May we all find salvation In Professions that heal." From: Cry Like An Angel (Steady On) I also really like another lyring from Object of my Affection (Fat City) "Now we see the women In the photograph Sweet Anne of mercy And Sylvia Plath For a thousand words They got a life sentence If we lined up all the girls Who died in vain We could wald on their heads To hell and back again But I got the big book And antidepressants." What are your thoughts regarding these songs?
