What's the buzz? Am I the only proud new owner of Holiday Songs and Lullabies, or did bH scratch me from the list for posting off topic (hehehh). And where IS bH anyway? Anyone seen her passing through their town incognito or something? Well... I like it ALOT, it definitely is NOT another cheezy Holiday sell-out, and after three listens it is really starting to sink in as a quality work full of really heartfealt and unique songs for Shawn. First confession: -I am a Christmas music fanatic so I was pretty confident I would like it. But for those of you who are not, ya might like it anyway! Great arrangements, and only four songs I've even heard before: two of the lullabies, Christmas Time is Here (gorgeous cover) and of course Silent Night. Seal Lullaby (lyrics from The Jungle Book by Kipling) is a real standout. The music on many of the non-traditional tunes by Alec Wilder and arrangements by Shawn and Doug Petty are something to behold. Lots of very old folk influences here and of course Shawns vocal interpretations are respectful to the music, yet clearly Shawn. So.. I'm really looking forward to hearing what everybody thinks! Maybe we'll even get 2¢ worth from the reclusive Lone Star (bH) herself, the Howard Hughes of the 90's. ~~~Nahhhh... probably not. -Rob - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I agree with the statement completely. I was afraid Shawn was turning into Celine Dion with this one, but I don't think we have anything to fear. Even though I'm against listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving, I don't imagine I could sit on this for another month. Besides my local Osco Drug is already selling Christmas decorations, so I figure I can let it slide this once. This is very sweet and sincere record. The best songs are the non traditional ones that I, at least, had never heard before. Stuff like "Silent Night" and "Little Road to Bethlehem" are almost after-thoughts and "Christmas Time is Near" takes a if you can't beat 'em, join 'em approach to the the Vince Guaraldi classic. "In the Bleak Mid-Winter" evokes the season and if you've every put a child to sleep, you'll know all about "Close Your Eyes" and "All Through the Night." I'm a sucker for this stuff, so it works for me. Obviously this ain't your regular Shawn record and it won't replace "Fat City" in my heart, but it's not supposed to and I'll happily take it out every year as the snow begins to fall. Mark H Here's my review in haiku form: Holiday Songs and Lullabies is Shawn's new disc no break-up songs here - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. They didn't even have it out on the floor, the guy had to go back in the back to get it. I've heard two or three of them before. It's too bad Shawn didn't write any of these. I like The Christ Child's Lullaby so far because it sounds so traditional, but I'll have to listen to this for a while before I can really make up my mind which ones I like. I don't think it's up there with her best work, but Shawn's worst album is better than most other artists' best.
