August 25, 1998 SHAWN COLVIN'S NEW ALBUM HOLIDAY SONGS & LULLABIES, IN STORES OCTOBER 13 Grammy Winning Artist To Play Four Shows In October Just in time for the holiday season, Columbia Recording artist Shawn Colvin is following up her Grammy-winning platinum-certified A Few Small Repairs album with Holiday Songs & Lullabies, a collection of all-new seasonal holiday classics and traditional children's lullabies. The album will be in stores on October 13. Shawn, who just became a first-time mother with the birth of her daughter Caledonia-Jean Marie in July, recorded Holiday Songs & Lullabies this past June, while she was 8-1/2 months pregnant. The inspiration for this project came from "Lullabies & Night Songs," a book of lullabies, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, which was given to Shawn by her parents when she was eight and which she cherished throughout her childhood. Last year, as Shawn recorded "All Through The Night" (which also appears on Holiday Songs & Lullabies) for Carnival, a various artists benefit album put together by Sting for the Rainforest Foundation International, she discovered that her keyboard player, Doug Petty, had a similar experience with the book when he was growing up. The pair felt compelled to make an album based on the songs n the book and also on their mutual love of seasonal music. Shawn's own memories of the Colvin family singing Christmas carols in four-part harmony in the car all year-round provided a warm touchstone for the recording of this album. Produced by Petty, Holiday Songs & Lullabies is an album that captures the sublime wonder and promise of childhood. The 14 songs -- "In The Bleak Mid-Winter," "Christmas Time Is Here," "Now The Day Is Over," "Rocking," "Windy Nights," "All Through The Night," "Love Came Down At Christmas," "Silent Night," "All The Pretty Li'l Horses," "Little Road To Bethlehem," "Seal Lullaby," "Evening Is A Little Boy/The Night Will Never Stay," "The Christ Child's Lullaby," and "Close Your Eyes" -- shimmer with elegant simplicity and the spirit of the season. Artwork for Holiday Songs & Lullabies includes some of Maurice Sendak's illustrations from "Lullabies & Night Songs," which Sendak graciously allowed to be used for this release after receiving a personal letter from Shawn Colvin. Harper Collins plans to rerelease "Lullabies & Night Songs" in time for Christmas 1999. Holiday Songs & Lullabies arrives in the middle of the most successful period of Shawn Colvin's remarkable career. Her last album, A Few Small Repairs earned two Grammys -- Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Sunny Came Home," produced and cowritten by John Leventhal -- and generated Shawn's first RIAA platinum record award. Shawn Colvin will perform four solo shows in October: October 11 Mesa, Arizona Chandler Open Air Center October 28 Atlanta, Georgia Robert Ferst Theater October 29 Pompano Beach, Florida Pompano Beach Amphitheater October 30 Orlando, Florida House Of Blues ##### - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I've gotten a bit more sleep since I composed this, but I don't want to re-edit it... :-) - ---- It is probably apropos that as I write this, I am 33,000 feet removed from the surface of the planet Earth.  I *probably* don't need the American Airlines MD-80 that I am contained within to maintain this altitude on my journey from Austin TX to San Jose, but it's here, and I got a full can of soda (the whole thing, just for me!) out of the deal, so what the heck... So.... the point I'm taking ever so long to get to here, and the reason for my euphoria, is that I was among the lucky couple of hundred people last night (Sunday 8/23) to see Shawn perform two songs with Neil Finn at La Zona Rosa in Austin.  Neil brought her up about a third of the way through his *most excellent* performance (Go see him if you get the chance, he is terrific live, and his new disc, Try Whistling This, is excellent as well).  They performed Private Universe and Weather With You.  Did I mention that there were no less than three of us small-repairers at the front of the stage directly in front of Shawn?   Well there were, including someone from a very small town in Virginny.... :-)  The name escapes me, but there was something about her hair.... ahem.... Wooo - Hoooo !!!  (apparently, it is illegal to say "yee-haw" in Texas without a valid Texas drivers license, or so I've been told....) Ah, but I'm getting ahead of myself here.  Of course, there was great anticipation that Shawn would (hopefully) show up and perhaps (more hopefully) sing a song with Neil, given their mutual admiration and the previous on stage meeting when Neil appeared at one of Shawn's shows last year in Australia.  Not long after the doors opened we were rewarded with a confirmed sighting of Shawn, and an unconfirmed sighting of Patty Griffin (which turned out to be false, but was quite tantalizing while the rumor was alive).  Now we just had to hope that Shawn would join Neil on stage and sing... When Neil announced that he wanted to bring up a special guest, the place went crazy, since everyone knew what that meant.  Just prior to that someone... okay it was Mimi... yelled out for Private Universe, which drew a look from Neil...  Shawn looked good, wearing some very cloggy footwear, and loose-fitting, white pants and sleeveless outfit.  Neil made a comment about Calie being at home asleep with Dad, to which Shawn answered, jokingly, "Who Cares!".  She acknowledged the various shouts of congratulations on Calie's birth and then they played.  Shawn sang the second verse of Private Universe, and it was so great to hear her voice, clear and loud, and in great shape. They then sang Weather With You, with Shawn singing the Tim Finn part, again excellently.  All too soon, that part of the show was over, and Shawn was gone, but it was sooo damn fine to see her!  During the songs, it was nice to see live what a great backing vocalist Shawn is, thinking back to her work with Suzanne Vega and on Lucy Kaplansky's The Tide, which Shawn also produced.  Just to continue with the Pulp Fiction method of time-line sequencing here, the opening act of the show was Ebba Forsberg, who is a singer-songwriter from Sweden.  She played a good set of interesting well-written tunes with a Euro-pop twist, which set the stage for the great show to come. All told, Neil played for about two and a half hours, came back for two encores, ending it all with the Split Enz tune, I Got You.  Oh yeah, and Neil's mid teen son is in his band with him, playing guitar and looking utterly bored...  pretty funny, actually. Although I was only in Austin for a long weekend, it made quite an impression on me as one of the finest cities to find great live music, great radio (KGSR 107.1, http://www.Austin360.com/kgsr/ ), and just an all around great vibe. Okay, anyone still with me??  If so, then I'd guess there is some mixture of insomnia, boredom and/or procrastination involved... but I digress yet again.  After the show it was off to a wonderful cafe for some after-show small-repairs banter, most of which I can't recall except for recounting the evening and some very bizarre and disturbing Paula Cole imagery. Bighair? are you out there? are you back from the great state of texas? I was watching VHI yesterday and they had a special on women in music during which they showed a 30 second interview with Shawn interspersed with an "I don't know why" video. Many thanks John for the most excellent review, and not at all hampered by the insomniac state in which it was written. However, you know full well that i am compelled to correct you on one minor detail (well, minor, give or take a couple thousand kilometres) - that being that Neil joined Shawn on stage in Auckland, New Zealand, and not (sigh) in Australia.... if only it had been in Australia.... (sigh). But i'm whining again. It was in Auckland (Home of The Warrior Princess) cos thats where Neil lives, which btw, is also why he talks funny (heheheheheheh - did BigHair mention i might say that? she did didnt she?) ;) one last whine - i missed neil when he played here cos i was over there, and i missed him when he played there cos i'm back here.... dontcha hate when that happens?
