At the memorial service today a beautiful song called Broken Things was sung by a local singer called Julia Turner. I managed to find the song on the net and discovered it was written by Julie Miller and that Shawn sang backing vocals on the original recording. (Credits below) Does anyone have any information on Julie Miller (I'm aware of Buddy, her husband, who plays in Spyboy) of Julia Turner ? Julie Miller Broken Things written by Julie Miller Julie Miller vocals Buddy Miller guitar/bass/drums/vocals John Schreiner keyboards/vocals Shawn Colvin background Vocals Melisa Hanson cello A very sad way to find way to find a beautiful song and, I'm sure, discover two great talents in Julie and Julia. If you want to hear the song in RealAudio (it really is worthwhile, albeit sad and incredibly moving), go to the page listed below. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/events/northern_ireland/latest_news/newsid_ 156000/156709.stm I hope no-one takes this post the wrong way, because of where I first heard the song, but I had to find out about it after seeing the TV and thought others might be interested and may want to find out a bit more about it. Although Shawn's appearance on the original recording may be coincidental, the song and style, I think, seem to bear some similarities to Shawn's music. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I think (and correct me if I'm wrong people) that when Shawn moved to NYC, she took over from Julie singing for the Buddy Miller Band, cos Julie was moving to LA - then the band dissolved when Buddy moved back west to marry Julie. Since then Shawn has sung backup on more than one of Julie's albums which were all, as far as I know, kinda folky countryish Christian music. I'm not sure which album Broken Things is off though. I have one album - Orphans and Angels - and it's pretty good, although a tad too twangy for my liking in some parts. But the songs I like, I love (including of course the couple to which Shawn contributes her lovely voice) ;) Julie released a new album earlier this year, or maybe late last year (who can remember these things) which I've only heard parts of... I think it may be a little less country, and more folk-rock than her earlier releases (but again, I could be wrong). Here's the spiel about the album, pinched without any kind of permission whatsoever, from the CD Universe web site (shhhhh....): "BLUE PONY, Miller's debut record on Hightone (her previous effort was on a small, Christian-oriented label) places her as a kind of quirky alternative-Americana artist. Think of a rootsy Victoria Williams, whose voice Miller often brings to mind. As if to purposely move past the "country" label, BLUE PONY starts off strong with a rocker, "A Kiss On the Lips," with its understated energy and Hammond B-3 backing. The next song "Take Me Back," ia a high lonesome duet with Julie's husband and co-producer, Hightone recording artist Buddy Miller. It recalls the kind of Appalachian folk songs that lie at the roots of commercial country music. While BLUE PONY does feature guest appearances by some big names (both Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle contribute their talents), the real star here is Miller's voice, a slightly helium-laced affair that you'll either find completely irresistible or somewhat annoying. What makes her singing remarkable, though, is her ability to suggest girlish innocence while singing about a deep kind of evil." Also, Julie and Buddy were both at Telluride this year (I *love* that I know that first hand), playing with Emmylou Harris, which I think they've been doing a lot lately, and they put in an appearance at the songwriting workshop where they both got to sing some of their own songs. I think they were also with Emmylou at her Lilith appearances... confirmation anyone? anyone? ;) So thats pretty much all I know about Julie... 'scuse the length and relatively non-Shawn content. :) And lets all hope that recent events will maybe finally lead to peace in northern Ireland....
