Sure she's earned the right to do what she wants, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. I would be suspicious of anyone's tastes who said they liked anything and everything a given artist has done. Personally, with the exception of a few songs, I don't much like "Cover Girl," though "Fat City" and AFSR are two of my "stranded-on-a-desert-island" records. Musical tastes vary so greatly from person to person that I don't put any stock in what even my closest friends say about music. We're different people with different tastes and I'm content to leave it at that. Saying things like "I'm sure it will be great" about her new record is nonsense. Why are you so sure? Shawn's her own person with her own ideas about where she wants to go artistically. Likewise we all have our own ideas about what we like about her work. I'm sure that if we picked a few of her songs and decided to tell what we liked about them we'd see A LOT of different responses. I see no reason to assume that whatever she does in the future will continue to energize us in the same way that some of her other stuff did when we first heard it. john Rob Love wrote: > My friend Ric from Columbus makes some dandy points in his recent post. > I'm not even sure what an artist "losing his/ her edge", or "going soft" > really means anymore. I don't like "everything she has done" and I don't think most of us are so deluded as to believe that she will never let loose with a bomb. However, it is pretty tough to berate the overall quality of her art over the last ten years or so. As a cover artist, she carries tremendous respect, and her songwriting and singing have gotton consistantly better. AFSR was a songwriter's clinic! Why would some of us feel that all of a sudden she will just suck out loud just because of some lifestyle changes. I just see no reason at this point to believe that. And while I am not feeling like: (your words) "I'm sure it will be great", I do feel pretty confident that it ain't gonna suck. -Rob - --WebTV-Mail-1338159568-1365 Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Message/RFC822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Received: from mailsorter-102.bryant.webtv.net (mailsorter-102.iap.bryant.webtv.net [207.79.35.92]) by postoffice-121.bryant.webtv.net (8.8.5/po.gso.24Feb98) with ESMTP id GAA02966; Sat, 18 Jul 1998 06:12:22 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mhub2.tc.umn.edu (mhub2.tc.umn.edu [128.101.131.42]) by mailsorter-102.bryant.webtv.net (8.8.5/ms.graham.14Aug97) with SMTP id GAA16520; Sat, 18 Jul 1998 06:12:21 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [160.94.23.44] by mhub2.tc.umn.edu with ESMTP; Sat, 18 Jul 1998 08:09:09 -0500 Message-ID: <35B09E7B.853C072A@tc.umn.edu> Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998 08:09:16 -0500 From: john gregg Reply-To: John E Gregg Organization: University of Minnesota X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 (Macintosh; I; PPC) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Rob Love , small-repairs@smoe.org Subject: Re: [s-r] References: <24115-35AFE368-1729@mailtod-121.bryant.webtv.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; x-mac-type="54455854"; x-mac-creator="4D4F5353" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Why are so many of you trying sooo hard to defend whatever Shawn does? Nice to return home and see that the list has come alive again. Hehheh.. even if some of ya *are* a little bit upset... (Thankfully, as Rob pointed out, we didn't have to return to discussions concerning anyone's body hair....) AGF would like to put some of you at ease. Perhaps knowing the significance of this upcoming project and what it means to Shawn will make you feel better about it. So please read: ================================= Shawn grew up with a special book of lullabies, published by Harper Collins and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, as one of her special possessions. She has actually been discussing this project with AGF for years (-- i.e., long before her baby was expected) -- the possibility of doing a children's record based on this material, an idea most likely spawned by her neice's birth, whom we all know she is very fond of. Shawn just treasures these songs and felt she could do a classy version of them, in contrast to some of the children's music already commercially available (which, let's face it, can often be pretty cheesy and just plain horrible). Coincidentally, her keyboard player, Doug Petty had a similar experience with and connection to the very same book. So during the tour last year, they started talking about doing something like this together. When AGF approached Columbia with this project, it became apparent that the whole project would have more commercial potential if the album was given a holiday context -- some of the lullabies were clearly holiday related anyway. So they decided to do it -- they're recording about 8 or 9 songs from the book, and are adding 5 or 6 other mostly obscure holiday songs. So don't look at this as a loss of edge or creativity or anything of the sort. These songs have real sentimental value to Shawn. The album is based on Shawn's solo performances, with beautiful musical coloring she and Doug worked out with strings, horns, and talented musicians like Steuart Smith. It will be classy, cool and quite extraordinary musical expression. AGF asks fans to give Shawn the creative latitude to accept what is a very sincere effort on her part. ====================================== a note from bH: So let's give it a chance, shall we? I mean, have y'all heard Shawn's version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"? It's quite brilliant. And who could resist the song she did with Ernie on Elmopalooza? Ah well, to each his own. If you don't enjoy these kind of ventures, well... don't buy it. But I'll be first in line for this one. :) ~jean aka bH now playing: horrible Top 40 Repeat Radio.
