As for the holiday songs, if you record and release a holiday song, although only seasonal, you stand a good chance of creating a song that becomes timeless and traditional, and become a part of people's lives and memories. Just ask Nat King Cole and he will tell you all about how selling out for a christmas song can ruin your professional reputation. Are you actually comparing Bob Dylan going electric at Newport to Shawn Colvin putting out a CD of holiday music? Not that there's anything wrong with either of those things, but I don't think Shawn's new disc will have quite the same effect. >Give Shawn a break. I don't believe anyone's been carping. I also don't believe that anyone is trying to tell Shawn what to do either. Anyone who's been a fan for a while knows that Shawn can't crank albums out like Leann Rimes. Frankly I thought it would be heckuva lot longer before she'd put any kind of album out, and I'll eagerly take what I can get. Speaking purely as a fan and consumer of her music, I hope she doesn't loose her "edge" or whatever compels her to sing and write songs like "Monopoly" and "Suicide Alley." Speaking as a human being, I of course don't begrudge her happiness and time off to have a family. Speaking (again?) as an uncle, I've seen that having a child changes everything in a person's life; whether it changes or inspires Shawn it ain't for me to say. I just hope I can continue to listen to and enjoy her music. >ps. We're basing all these postings and suppositions on what one DJ said >before one song? Well, I got the news from Sean Petrie, and I doubt he'd post frivolous news on his website. You people have lost your minds! Shawn Colvin has to do a children's album. Let's see, who has done children's albums? Hmmm. James Taylor, Carly Simon, Simon and Garfunkel, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bette Midler. She has to do this. Why are people being so elitist about music. If you do not share with children, they will not appreciate good music later. Doing a children's album could only open her talent, not stifle it. I personally can't wait to hear what lullabyes Shawn Colvin will choose. Just listen to the music. Christmas music is beautiful. Shawn will put together a kick ass christmas collection. Let Shawn worry about her creative process and just enjoy the music. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I'm not even sure what an artist "losing his/ her edge", or "going soft" really means anymore. Most of my folk and rock idols who have stopped down for a time and had kids (or made Christmas albums for that matter) have come back with some really strong efforts. Yes, the experience of having kids does change you, but the creative process may even be enhanced by the time off and by the new perspective. I hardly think it softens you, since you gotta get smarter and quicker with each passing day. Shawn is undeniably entitled to enjoy a little of the success she actually deserved many moons ago. Our gal paid her dues, and I hope the rumors are true. My four year old daughter loves Shawns music, and Chrismas music even more, so we'd both be thrilled. And whatever Cover Girl decides to interpret, I think we can all be pretty confident that it will be first rate stuff... (anyone ever heard even ONE bad Shawn cover?)
