Cheers and long live 'Fat City'. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a similar reaction. A few months back my friend and I were joking that Shawn's next album would probably be nothing but songs about how great it is to be a mother and how beautiful the smile of a child is. Little did we know... Nevertheless, I wouldn't say Shawn's gone completely mushy on us. She's had that streak in her for a long while now. Fat City's 'I Don't Know Why' is a lullaby and 'You and the Mona Lisa' was, of course, inspired by her baby niece. I actually like the Shawn and piano sound of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' so the ablum might actually be kinda groovy. I do think the album is mainly Sony trying to capitalize on the Grammy win and get something out there ASAP. As for Elmopolloza, I'm willing to cut Shawn some slack, after all she got to sing with Ernie, the all time coolest Muppet. Mark H isn't sure about buying a Christmas album in October. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I think Shawn is an excellent song writer, right up there with Joni Mitchell so I wonder why she would deprive her fans of her own songs. In all fairness, I was reluctant to purchase "Cover Girl" but after I did, I loved it. I can only hope that the same will be true of the holliday-lullabye CD, which I still plan to purchase. BTW, I saw Patty Griffin with Shawn Colvin in a small venue in Santa Barbara (or, rather South of SB). This was an absolutely incredible show and I had a table right next to the stage and James Taylor came out and did a few songs. He looks different but sounds *exactly* the same. Does anyone know what Patty Griffin is doing and when we can expect a new CD from her. She's amazing. I also saw Shaun with Larry Klein (Klien?) several years ago in Los Angeles. This too was a fabulous show. Julia Fordham say a couple of songs, notably "Porcelain". Fordham referred to Colvin as a "brave and plucky soul". Ain't that the truth. I must say I am tickled by everyone's concerns over the "kids-oriented CD" rumor. (I'm on digest, so forgive me if this subject has already been beat to death!) A lot of artists do these kids or Christmas CDs, and yeah, usually these CDs aren't nearly as interesting as their regular work. But so what?! They don't consume much creative energy or studio time, either, and then the artist goes back to work on his or her regular adult fare. Unless the CD is really awesome, it's not like Shawn's going to go on tour around it or make us wait an extra 2 years for the next "real" offering. (Her *kid* might do that to us, but I doubt a "kid CD" will.) Personally, I'd say having kids has forced me to become much *more* creative. For example, all the innovative explanations I have to improvise justifying why I get the last of the chocolate ice cream and they don't any at all. I'm telling you, it requires major artistic talent to pull this kind of thing off, night after night! - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I think she sounds fantastic w/a band, but some people complain. I also think change is good---well, usually---and am glad that Patty tried something different. Altho this probly means we won't see another raw, acoustic album. I wish all you guys had been around in 1966 to talk that Bob Dylan guy out of the silly idea of not just playing acoustic folk music anymore and maybe trying to go with something new, like playing with an electric rock & roll band and inventing the style of music we all love. Give Shawn a break. After you guys and girls all put out 5 albums of great music, tour your asses off for years in support of those albums, and finally settle in for a little r&r with your husband and new baby, then let everybody carp at your musical decisions. As for the holiday songs, if you record and release a holiday song, although only seasonal, you stand a good chance of creating a song that becomes timeless and traditional, and become a part of people's lives and memories. Just ask Nat King Cole and he will tell you all about how selling out for a christmas song can ruin your professional reputation.
