Day 6 - At least Shawn was here in Spirit…

After a Bela Fleck workshop in the Courthouse Park, we drooled over an
INCREDIBLE songwriter's workshop that followed in the sweltering sun:

Jim Lauderdale
Buddy & Julie Miller
Emmylou Harris
John Jennings
Duke Levine
And Mary Chapin Carpenter

They each performed a couple of songs and everyone chipped in.  Chapin sang
Jubilee and a brand new song called, "In The Moment."  The performances were
outstanding.  Wowee.  They were all having so much fun. One of the most
exciting moments was when Chapin dedicated her second song to Shawn!!  Shawn
fans cheered aloud… and there were many.  Chapin sang Lefty Frizzel's, "That's
the Way Love Goes" and it was terrific. (This was the song that they had done
as a duet in the Unicef Benefit Concert.)  Shawn was clearly missed by both
the crowd and the artists…and we kept expecting her to pop onstage at any
moment.  Alas, she didn't.

"Mothership!" John Jennings again…  bH finally works up the courage to say
"Hello" to him.  What a nice guy.

Evening performances included:
Nanci Griffith (she was great as always. Love to hear her say, "Thank you,
Kindly!" with the drawl that only Nanci can do.)
Yikes… I forget who else…we had to go home and pack which is just as well bcz
it is really cold and everyone is starting to get a cold at this point.

Day 7 - Silly bH…  Time to go Home.

What a week it had been… BigHair accidently schedules their departing flight
for realllllly early Sunday morning not knowing there would be performances
that late on Sunday… drat.  Tina, bH, Sara, and Kat miss Chapin and Allison
Krauss that night.  Gerry and Lisa stick around for that, and hopefully will
let us know how that went.. (Won't ya guys?)

The Summary:  (Brought to you from Idaho Falls, Idaho!)

The Telluride Festival is a FANTASTIC event… they knew exactly how to handle
the droves of people… and there was much to do before the festival as well.
If you plan to go in the future, get there a few days before the festival and
stay a couple of days after.  There are some great hiking trails which can be
done before the music events get started. Make sure you make your condo
reservations EARLY… Buy your tickets way in advance because they sell out
quickly… and be sure to get a Town Park Sticker before they sell out or they
won't even let your vehicle into the town.  Campers have the best chance at
good seats at the shows if they camp at Town Park, and the lines for a spot
inside usually begin forming at 3 to 5 am.  Whew!  The workshops are a great
chance to see the artists goofing around and totally relaxed, and they take
questions from the audience as well.  All Good.

Many of us plan to return to Telluride (Kat?  Up for another?)… Perhaps Shawn
will make it next year!  (Kat's note - if I make plans and enough money to go
again next year, and Shawn turns out to be preggers with her second…. wow,
will there be trouble!!) It was great fun and a week to remember.  Thanks
everyone.  What a blast.  :)  ~bH

Subject: [s-r] NSC- The Music at Telluride - Part 2

Day 4 - The Spaghetti is here... Let's Party!

A morning snow shower puts fresh powder atop our snow-capped mountains.  Sara
and bH go for a 3-mile hike to Bear Creek Falls at 7:30 in the morning.
Interesting how Sara with an injured ankle and bH with a bum knee end up doing
the hike whilst the healthy people stay in bed... Dude!  It was truly
breathtaking, both literally and figuratively.  Our hiking boots are
legitimately scuffed and dusty and muddy from the hike.  Yee Haw!  Colorado
rules.

Poor Kat, what did you catch on the plane?  (You know? bH has drugs for that…)
We were forced to leave Kat behind to heal in the morning as we checked out
the wares of the local vendors.  Kat finally surrenders to our time zone
requirements, joins us, and we return to the Mountain Village to eat lunch,
and admire our previously mentioned patch of snow.  (We are easily amused.)

In search of an inexpensive way to eat, we decide to have a Pasta Party...
Yum!  This was the brainchild of bH's sister, Tina,  whom shall henceforth be
known as not-so-bigHair (nsbH).  Following the obligatory video and photo
session with everyone (all 7 of us) seated around the table smiling like
hungry people who would rather be eating.... we dug in.

Evening activities include many games this night, and Kat kicks our butts in
American Pop Culture and we reluctantly crown her as Queen of Useless TV
Trivia (why does she know SO much?)…The "You Don't Know Jack" Tournament was
soon followed by Uno and Pictionary challenges.  Remember, it's just a game!
Tina and Lisa? "Luv you! Mean It!"


Day 5 - Day one of Bluegrass Festival (More MUTHERSHIPS)

The Music events.  Ahhhh…. The music.

"Mothership!" John Jennings! (Chapin's guitarist)  Our first mothership was
sighted at the ticket box office… "Gee," said Sara, "Isn't that John
Jennings?" And it was.  bH loses her nerve to speak to him…She has actually
met John by way of a mutual friend, but wasn't sure if John would remember
her. (bH is really a big chicken…)  We decided to leave him alone… hehheh… for
now.

"Mothership!" Gerry and bH took Jay to the airport today since he had to go
back to Austin… We noticed an incoming plane receiving special attention… and
who steps off the plane but Williamsburg, Virginian, Bruce Hornsby!  Couldn't
get his attention to say, "Hello"; rats. So we just pressed our faces against
the glass at the observation booth and took pictures.

Some of us spent the afternoon watching Troubadour Finalists.  Keep an eye out
for these up and coming performers:

Erica Wheeler
Barbara Kessler (bH's favorite)
Eugene Ruffalo (The Troubadour Contest winner who's style was very James
Taylor-ish)
Bob Hillman
Peter Mayer 

There was a very cool FREE workshop on harmony vocals in the Courthouse Park:
Duke Levine (Chapin's multi-instrumentalist)
Barbara Kessler
Jimmy Ryan
Jennifer Kimball (of Jonatha Brooke and The Story fame)
Catie Curtis

Each artist took turns singing songs.  Catie played some newer material and
everyone joined in.  Barbara Kessler did some of her material and had the
audience singing along.  (bH bought a CD from Barbara and got it signed.)
Jennifer Kimball fans will be happy to know that her new album will be coming
out on August 18th and don't forget she is also on tour.  Judging from the
songs that she played, it's gonna be good!

Telluride performers this night included:

"Mothership!"  While watching Emmylou's set, guess who walks by?  nsbH was
wearing her baseball hat that says "Shenandoah University - School of
Pharmacy".  We hear Sara say, "Hi!" Then a voice says, "Hi. Nice Hat."  Tina
sez, "Thanks."  Kat and bH turn around and notice that it is none other than
BRUCE HORNSBY!  Bruce was just walking amongst the crowd on his way to the
backstage area…  He asks tina, "You Go there?"  Tina, still slightly stunned,
answers with a meek "Yeah." Bruce says, "You go there now?"  Tina says,
"Yeah."  Sara turns his attention to bH's sweatshirt… (bH notes that it was
the grace of the Laundry Gods that allowed that particular College of William
& Mary sweatshirt to be clean enough to wear that day…)  Bruce asks bH, "Did
you go there?" She cooly responds, "Yep, I was there when you shot your Valley
Road video on campus." "Wow!" He says, "That was over 10 years ago!"  "Yeah"
sez bH.  "Bye!" sez Bruce.  "Bye!" we chime.  We eventually emerged from our
Mothership Coma….

DUDE! It was reallllllllly cold during the evening performances.  Our feet
were numb and we had to miss Bruce…But the Festival remains very organized and
the crowd was great.

Subject: [s-r] NSC: Telluride Bluegrass Festival (Part 1)

[nsc...sorta] The Mothership Has Landed.

Hi everyone… BigHAIR here, with a very late report about the Telluride
Adventure that took place about a month ago. We actually worked on this whilst
in Telluride, but because it was stored in my sister's laptop, it got taken
away on another trip, and it's been awful hard (and expensive) keeping up with
email on the road. (We are currently in Winnemucca, NV!) Sorry for the delay.
(A quick "Hello" to John DeFord whom we met in San Francisco a coupla days
ago… it was great meeting ya!  Yer Da Best!) Okay.  So you wanted to hear
about our travels… Hehheheh…. And who are we to turn you down?  Here is a team
effort at a narrative of our events. Hang on to your hats!  This is gonna be
wayyy long and only sorta shawn related since she wasn't actually there.  But
as you will see, she was there in spirit and greatly missed…

***RED ALERT!!!!*** A WHOLE LOTTA NON-SHAWN CONTENT TO FOLLOW!!**
 we will admit that this is sort of a historic account for those who actually
went so we will each have a copy of the events that unfolded… if this bothers
you, quit reading now… like right this very minute!  Thou hath been warned.

Prologue.
Sunday.  After the plane ride from Hell...  (praise God for the drug
Dramamine...) the Faithful Few descended upon the Land we call Telluride. Meet
the members of The Crew:  Gerry, Sara, Lisa, bH, Tina, Jay, and Kat.  It was a
Small Repairer Fest!  We had a little trouble adjusting  to the thinner air
and the noticeable lack of oxygen in Colorado.  Yes, everything they said
would happen... happened; i.e. lightheadedness, nausea, headache, and...
PALPITATIONS! (Right, Palpie?)  Sunday was definitely an adjustment day.

Day 1 - (Still Sunday) Excuse me, are you famous?

All the members of our party finally arrive, including our very own Aussie --
who won the prize for longest distance traveled, and least amount of sleep,
and heaviest bag -- so we let her collapse, while we went for pizza and a walk
thru the town.  In the event of a celebrity sighting, we devised a secret code
word, "Mothership!" which would be uttered loudly and with feeling so as to
get everyone's attention without yelling the celebrity's name.  (Ok, so we are
a little strange…)  While the rest of us were buying poptarts and food at a
local market, Gerry waits outside and spots the first Mothership as none other
than Keanu (sp?) Reeves as he strolls by the market.  As no one else has
sighted said mothership, we find it difficult to believe, but coming from
Gerry - we take his word for it.

Day 2 - C'mon, you know the words!! (also called, "Scuse me, While i touch the
snow.")

We take it easy today because some of us are still suffering from altitude
sickness.  What else is there to do but take the walking tour of Telluride -
thank goodness it's a small town. There are still only a few Festivarians in
town… we expect the town to swell with people any day now.  The final moments
of day two were spent with the VCR....  We rocked the house to bH's collection
of 80's videos for a couple of hours with no less than 4 versions of Olivia
Newton John's "Physical".  It's hard to believe they ever cancelled a quality
show like Solid Gold.*
*(bH's sez:  it pleased me that they sang along.)

Remember that it's June, so the fact that there is snow on the ground excites
us greatly (except me, sez Kat, it being winter at home and all).  Up we go to
the Mountain Village (where Oprah has a house) by way of the free gondola to
touch the snow. This expedition was led by our Fearless Leader, Sara.  It
began as, "Wouldn't it be neat to touch the snow?"  then Lo! and Behold!  We
find ourselves climbing hills, stepping over No Trespassing signs, and
crossing streams to touch this patch of snow.  Leftover chicken in hand from
dinner just minutes before, Sara leads us to the frozen stuff, and leaves her
mark...  the snow angel which we hope will baffle the town much like the crop
circles of Iowa.  Mission accomplished.

The Festival is getting closer to being set up.  There is more and more
activity in the town…

Day 3 - Lesson of the Day: "If I were a Ute - I'd be glad I was a mammal"

Poor Gerry, what did you eat to make you feel such pain?  We won't go into
details here but suffice it to say that Gerry did not join the trek to Mesa
Verde National Park because of "Bad Angus." Bahahahaha! (Sorry, Ger.)  A quick
scan of the "spectacular view" (the brochure's word not ours), we were off to
the centuries old, Native American cliff dwellings.  Say "cliff dwellings" ten
times fast and you'll be amazed at your own transformation into Elmer Fudd.
This concludes the cultural portion of our program.

It was a day of majesty and profound respect for history. Ok, ok… we also went
to Wal-Mart…

We return to our luxurious AND WARM lodge,  and a new crew member arrives!!
Enter Coast Guard Guru, Lisa, who also hails from Virginia... (It's a shame
that she missed the 80's video presentation...)  And bH's cuzzin from Austin,
TX, whom we shall call, Jay,  since his name is, well… Jay….also joins the
crew...
 
By this time, we're hungry for MUSIC!!!!   Telluride is becoming increasingly
crowded.  What a diverse crowd!

Well here's my addition to Jean's 3 part story. 

Day 7 - Silly bH…  Time to go Home....well maybe not yet for 2 of the crew.

6-21-98
Woke up early Sunday to sadly say goodbye to Jean, Tina, Kat and Sara who are
headed back home and on to future music/travel adventures.

Went to a workshop "We're making records" at 11:00 that included: David
Glasser,
Cookie Marenco and John Jennings. The chat was really a Q&A session from the
audience about the industry and was attended by at most 25 people. Lots of
insightful info about what changes are coming with the internet and how the
labels will have less and less control over what a musician puts out, both
through the record stores and online with liquid audio being a major factor.
As I'm leaving when it's over an hour and a half later, I go downstairs and
John Jennings is standing outside with some of one of the audience members,
but he's just hanging out. 
I don't say much to him, since I asked him what I wanted inside. As I'm
continuing to go down the block, who is walking towards me with only her p/r
person but, 
Mary Chapin Carpenter. I just walked by Chapin without saying a thing and
turned around thinking, no, I'm not going to bother her in her element and I
would probably say something stupid or something that she's probably her from
her gazillion 
fans already.

On to the evening: I meet up with Lisa around 5pm and her friends have gotten
a killer spot once again, since they got up at 5 in the morning to get a place
in line. Lisa and I go up to the front to stake out a spot before Alison
Krauss comes on and we have no real trouble doing so. Alison played
beautifully with Union Station and they performed most of their hits,
including "I don't know why" and others. They did a killer smokey version of
"Atlanta". Alison teased the crowd that since there was no room to stay in
Telluride that they were staying in the Mountain village a gondola car ride
away. The woman at the desk says well, we have all the herbal treatments you
may need. Do you think you'll want a body scrub?  Not one to pass up a good
offer she accepted, but you should have heard some of the comments 
from the crowd.

Chapin came on after 8 and played for about 90 minutes. She was wearing a
black top, blue jeans and bergenstocks for shoes of course.  The band kicked
major bootee. They played: Stones in the road, the hard way, He thinks he'll
keep her, Passionate kisses, I feel lucky, Down at the twist and shout, Halley
came to Jackson, and more plus 2 new songs which sounded in the same style of
writing as the one she played in the workshop and lots more.  She did a killer
version of  girls w/guitars that knocked me off of my feet.  Duke was
amazing(since this was the 1st time I'd seen him play)  and JJ was flawless.
The sound was absolutely perfect.  We finished around 10:15 and I was sorry to
see the festival end. Thank goodness I had another week still to go in CO. 

I did go back to Telluride about 4 days later to see how much changed, and it
was amazing how much clean-up was done. You would have never had thought the
festival had been there the previous week. The gates were back on the ball
fields and it was back to being a town.

Well, I'm all up for going to Telluride again though I don't know about '99,
but you can surely count me in for going back, like Jean, I highly suggest
anyone else to 
give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks so much for the Telluride updates!!! I am a major Chapin devotee, alongside
our Shawn of course !!! I especially appreciate the set list and the John Jennings
info.(he's among my guitar heroes) and your commentary on the CO experience was
superb. It is a wonderful state, I agree-I loved it a few years ago when I
attended a Chapin concert there. I would definitely be interested in attending
Telluride with other repairpersons in the future, if our Shawn and hopefully MCC
could be there the same year, it would be super. Thanks for all your reviews.

Speaking of our Shawn, there's a quicktime movie of Shawn performing at LA Lilith
Fair, on the Lilith Fair website. It is a 1.7 megabyte download on the Lilith Fair
site, but it sort of disappointed me(in terms of the movie "quality and sound" and
length-maybe 15 seconds, not disappointed in Shawn, of course). She sings Sunny,
if I recall.

A good weekend to all Shawnsters !!!
