I´ve been a silent partner for a while, but I must answer to Meri´s request for the guitar-version of trouble.A friend who works as a roadie recently gave me a video-tape of Shawn performing at a small club in Stockholm when she was doing promotion for "A few..." The gig was not promoted at all, so the audience was mainly barguests and record-company people. I was supposed to be at that club that night to have a beer with some friends, but I was tired and went home. Imagine my frustration when they called the day after to break the news..? Anyhow the show was videotaped with superb quality and it´s about 35-40 min long. She plays songs from "A few..." ,with Trouble as one of the highlights, and she rounds off with two great versions of "Shotgun..." and "Round of blues". The video is in european PAL,and if anyone is interrested you can e-mail me privately. Take care everybody !! I *knew* that if I risked attributing that song to Brel without checking I would end up being wrong -- on top of probably spelling his name incorrectly. Sigh. Such is the fate of a very lazy person. So, while you got me going, how much of Shawn's Sting anecdote did we already discuss here? I'm curious; >pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase tell us, pretty please? God, I love it when people beg! Thanks Anna. It is long, however, so sit back and relax. I will probably get some of the details wrong, but it should be close enough to capture the spirit. And I suppose it goes almost without saying that all this is much funnier with Shawn's delivery. There are two parts: The part I thought I'd read here before plus the new part about the handstands. As we all know, Shawn does a version of the Police's "Everything You Do Is Magic." (Orginally penned by Stephen Sondheim, unless I am mistaken, right?) As an aside, her performance of it in Kentucky was, IMO, a much stronger one than either the Cover Girl or Live '88 versions. Wonderful bass resonance on the rhythm. Almost eerie. Anyhow, having finished the song, she reaches for her water bottle and tosses out: "Thank you. I wrote that one last night." Much laughter ensues, since it is, after all, a rather well-known tune. Then she launches into the story of the three nights she fronted for Sting in Germany a ways back. Although it didn't sound like she spent too much time with him, they did share the backstage and the catered food area. And before the first show he asks -- here she imitates his British accent -- "So. Are you going to do 'that' song?" She tentatively replies, "Uh, I'm not sure. Were *you* planning to do it?" He responds, "Well yes, actually." Which she astutely takes as a hint that she *not* do it. So she quickly assures him that she will remove it from her setlist. Then the first night, there she is, onstage, happily discovering that the heavy-drinking, rowdy crowd that came to see Sting and his full band are, against all odds, actually enjoying her solo performance. She's having herself a real good time. And suddenly she decides, "What the hell. I'm up first. What can he do? I'll *scoop* him!" So she does the song anyhow. That's our girl! That's the main punch line. I guess he never refered to it directly, but after two nights of this, he finally asked her to join him onstage the final night to help him sing the song. Like I said, it loses a lot in the retelling, but you get the general idea. Ok, that's the part I thought everyone already heard. I'll do the much shorter (and less funny, to be honest) handstand part as a separate post. I had to take a call there. Ok. Sting, part two. I realize now that there's no way I can convey this story well. It's all in Shawn's telling of it. But now that I've gotten Anna to beg, here goes anyhow... (Bit as a bonus prize, I've added another little ancedote at the end.) After the part I previously posted, she explains that the following is what she really wanted to tell us. She then prefaces with "First of all, Sting is, like, practically a *poster-child* for yoga, right?" [Big emphasis, as noted.] "But what I realized on that tour is that he must be a real exhibitionist or something." [Like duh, Shawn!] Apparently, before each show he would come out in front of his dressing room and do a long handstand. Whether it was actually a headstand, I don't know. She said it was a handstand. But the point is that, in doing so, his shirt would fall down completely to expose his extremely well-toned torso. Which being a hetero female, Shawn found quite enticing, indeed. As she noted, "It's not like he couldn't have done it in his dressing room. He had the space there. Yet each night he made a point of coming out into the hall to do this handstand." And so each night she -- and many others, no doubt -- made a point of finding excuses to come out into the hall at just the right time to gaze in awe upon his lovely, exhibitionist Self. End of story. I guess Sting is a follower of the "if you got, flaunt it" creed. Again, what a surprise. I am shocked. Simply shocked. Finally: the bonus anecdote, which occured the first of the two shows in Lexington. I missed that show but read in the local paper that she explained that any tune can become a folk song if you add "...and the rain came-a-tumbling down" as a coda. Apparently she then demonstrated by adding these lines to an impromtu cover of The Kink's "Lola." I thought that was pretty funny. Presumably the reason she picked Lola was that, on the second night at least, the theater management broadcast it prominently as a promo piece for an upcoming appearance there by Ray Davies. (Or maybe it wasn't Ray. What is the other brother's name? Sondheim? ) Th'th'th'th'that's all, folks! - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. WOW - thanx for telling us - i'm glad someone's paying attention to the state of shawn's australian singles, since i certainly havent been. Perhaps I better get my butt into an HMV in Sydney and see if it actually exists here as well as in the States! Still havent heard Nothin On Me on radio yet, and in fact, still never heard You and the Mona Lisa, but I'm thinking that maybe now we've caught up a tad on Suddenly Susan episodes and we now have the Shawn version theme song, maybe that'll help... And thirdly, I'm *stoked* that the single has some live tracks on it (assuming i can actually find it) cos I admit I was a little disappointed with the Sunny single having a variety of past album tracks... although it was a great idea to expand the horizons of new Shawn fans, so that's a good thing too... kat :) - - retreating back into lurk mode, where there's way too much work to do and way too little time to go shopping for shawn singles.... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
