I will gladly send costs for taping , shipping and whatever. I have nothing to trade, as I have only become part of this exclusive little world recently. I do have a tape of Danielle Howle from 86 in Columbia, SC with a band called the Blue Laws. I am also waiting for two Indigo Girls bootlegs from Europe. If I can trade let me know. I also have some very rare Judy Garland. I'm sure you're waiting on pins and needles for that. First time was here in DC. This time I caught her via great seats in a small theatre in Lexington KY. (This was last thursday night, but I've been email-deprived since then!) I have already deleted the digest that included someone's disappointment over how tired she seemed in another recent show, so I don't recall who said it. My experience was that she visibly pooped out towards the end of the show, but the overall performance was still wonderful. She is such a great guitar player! Most noteworthy were her performances of "Trouble" and "Polaroids." The full band version of "Trouble" has only sparse acoustic guitar. So I was delightedly surprised to hear the guitar-only version, which consists of a series of rapid hammer-ons capo'd fairly high up on the neck. It is a virtuoso showcase, for sure. And the singing was equally inspired. I want the solo version on tape, dammit! Who has a copy? (How else will I figure out the guitar part?!) Weakest songs: "Fat City" (done as a encore request from the audience), "Sunny Came Home" (much better with a full band) and a truly uninspired rendition of Steve Earle's "Fearless Heart," done during the encores as a request from touring partner Ana Egge. The whole genius of that song is its attitude, which by Shawn's tired encore, just wasn't gonna happen. Overall, I'd give the show an "A," despite the low spots. My friend, who had seen her play solo about four years ago, deemed last week's show far far superior. He was impressed, to say the least. The tiredness thing seemed OK, really. You know, like we're a community and our friend here is pregnant and a little tired but still a great pleasure to behold. Anecdote: Has someone already mentioned the "Send In the Clowns" tuning thing? For one of her open tunings she does a number of fingerings before each song to test the string pitch. Suddenly, she exclaims "There it goes again! Did you hear that?" It turns out the guitar is determined to play the first distinctive notes of "Send In the Clowns," (by Jacques Brel, I think, and known to many of us through Judy Collin's rendition). And sure enough, every time she tried to tune that guitar, it would sing "Isn't it rich?" Silly git-fiddle! Summary advice: Shawn, when you play solo on those TV talk shows, blow off the conventional wisdom and perform "Trouble" instead of "Sunny Came Home." You'll sell far more records that way, I am certain. - -Meri- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
