I drove down from Columbus to see Shawn at Bogart's, a really nice maybe 1100 capacity club in lovely Cincinnati, Ohio. I've seen Shawn 6 or 7 other times dating back to the early 90's and I would have to say this was easily the weakest show. I wouldn't have wanted it to be my first time seeing her as it was for John. Shawn was very visibly tired. As a singer-songwriter myself I know how hard the road can be and I'm not a 5 months pregnant 40 year old woman. It's a grueling prospect for anyone, male or female, in anything but their teens or twenties. And yeah, I know there's a lot of women on this list that are gonna call me sexist for making these comments; all I can say is, you trying going out on the road for months in Shawn's condition and then get back to me on hardships and sexism. I enjoyed the show, please don't get me wrong, Shawn didn't have any of the vocal difficulties mentioned from St. Paul, but I did miss the normal Shawn energy level, always high, always gracious. The guitar playing, as always, was right on the money. After the first burst of hearing Steady On back in '89 or '90 it was seeing Shawn on Austin City Limits and realizing what a great guitar player she was that really won me over. Lots of people can write good songs, fewer can really impress you with their way around a fretboard. (Richard Thompson, Elliott Murphy, Lou Reed come immediately to mind.) So yeah, it was a good show, not a great show, and I have to admit there were times I felt a little bad seeing one of my heroines going through all this for us. But then again, I'd rather give my hardly hard-earned money to Shawn than to almost anybody else. SET LIST: Someday Get Out of This House Trouble You and the Mona Lisa Another Long One Wichita Skyline Cry Like An Angel Steady On Sunny Came Home I Don't Know Why (I've never seen Shawn do this live, it was lovely.)
