I thought I'd post my review of Shawn's St. Paul, Mn. show better late than never. The show was Sunday night in a small (1000 seat?) college auditorium. As usual for this tour, the opening act was Anna Egge. Neither my friend nor I knew anything about her in advance but we were very impressed. She was a little excited and consequently sang a little too loud, but her songwriting is strong and her guitar playing is excellent. Of the 5 or 6 songs she played, I thought 2 were especially good. Can't remeber their names now. Anna also talked to us about some of the sings, which I always find interesting. As for Shawn, this was my first time seeing her and I had very high expectations. I have to say I was let down a little. Please don't flame me! BH said her show in Duluth the following night was cancelled because of health reasons. She did seem to have a cold and my friend commented that it seemed she couldn't hit some of the notes. Shawn even seemed to visually acknowledge this at one point. She wasn't very relaxed through the first few songs. Maybe it was when she started telling stories that she settled down. She didn't mention Oprah, but told the toenail story, the Lyle Lovett story, and gave an extended review of Titanic (she dumped on it.) She was quite impressed with Good Will Hunting. I know it was discussed in this list a couple of months back what the sense of "It was just a mirage, so I hid in the garage" was. The Lyle Lovett story was a segue to Mona Lisa and Shawn implied that it's a bit of a nonsense song. It started as music that she just slapped words on. So don't try to make too much sense out of it. Anyway, Shawn played just about everything I wanted her to. I thought Polaroids, one of my favs, was particularly good. The only thing I really missed was Orion in the Sky. I never realized what a great guitar player Shawn is. Only listening to her records and never seeing a video or concert left me with only a vague idea of what guitar parts she was playing on the songs. When you think about her long career playing folk joints, I guess it only makes sense that she's so good with the guitar. Our seats were good. We were 10th row, left of center. I don't know how the people in front of me got better seats because I bought my tickets the minute they went on sale, but there you have it. I thought the crowd was interesting. There were several families there with children early-teens and younger. That was great to see. One of the dads even went out to the lobby after Anna Egge played and bought her CD for his daughter. The crowd, however, didn't give Shawn as enthusiastic response as I would have expected, but then neither did I. My friend, another first-time Colvanist, liked the show a lot. Here's the set list: 1. Someday 2. Get Out of This House 3. Trouble 4. You and the Mona Lisa 5. Another Long One 6. Wichita Skyline 7. Cry Like and Angel 8. Steady On 9. Sunny Came Home 10. Round of Blues - ----- encore ---- 11. Polaroids (*sigh*) 12. (some Paul Simon song I hadn't heard before) 13.
