Shawn was tired, but she amazingly used that to enhance her performance. She wasn't the harried kind of tired, which I've seen before, but relaxed, happy and confident. Her guitar playing was restrained, quieter, yet still very accurate and excellent. Her vocals on some of the songs were also more restrained, but she was in command. She could hit any notes she wanted without straining, but just chose not to, in some instances, opting for a lower register. Her performance of "Trouble" was the absolute highlight of the show for me. I love the song anyway, but the combination of the subdued, quiet guitar and her restrained vocal gave it a whole dimension of world-weariness that was so appropriate for the song. In my opinion, she could have just done that song alone, and I would have felt that I got my moneys worth, it was that good. I am *very* glad she played more, though. She also did some songs that she hasn't been doing for awhile, like Steady On, Someday, and Tenderness on the Block, all of which were excellent. The quiet way she was playing had the effect of making the venue seem much smaller to me. At times, like on Trouble and If These Walls, it was like she was in a living room. And that took some doing since my seats weren't very close (halfway up the balcony, in the middle, so the sound was excellent). She did part of "One for the Road" impromptu and a cappella, because she was talking about doing the Walden benefit that Don Henley organized the night before and that was part of why she was a bit tired. IMHO, she didn't talk too much, really just a couple of times, though one did go on for a bit. I liked it a lot, as always. It was special that she dropped the "usual shtick" and really had the crowd laughing very hard at times. Out of our party of five, three were first timers, so the Lyle Lovett story wasn't wasted (she gave the short version of it, anyway). Also IMHO, she wasn't mad at all at Oprah, some audience members were saying that Oprah cut her off, which she responded to kiddingly, but she hadn't even seen the show, and said she didn't feel that way when she did Oprah's show. Anyway, it was a great show, tonic for the soul. It was bittersweet (for me, anyway) as she finished, because the memory of how truly wonderful she is live solo had faded with time a bit, and now it's shining, but I also know it's bound to be a very long time before I'll see her again. - -John ................................. . . First off in 'Harper's Bazaar', there's a short article about Shawn and her wonky tastes in clothes. Fiona Apple's on the cover (tho I thought it was Joan Osborne at first) Shawn's on the cover with a bunch of other Grammy winners in a new magazine called, amazingly enough, 'Grammy'. There's a short interview with her and John L. Finally, there's a Grammy night picture of Shawn and the hubby in 'In Style.' Sandra Bulluck is on the cover of that one. I've been babysitting my two toddler nephews and I got to take the afternoon off at a bookstore. Man, I needed it. I swear they have rocket fuel pumping through those little bodies.
