It focuses on the relationship between Shawn and John Leventhal as songwriters and the making of AFSR. The title of the article is Sunny Girl: How Shawn Colvin made a few small repairs and struck gold with "Sunny Came Home". (Is it just me, or are a lot of the titles of Shawn articles tortuously cliched??) Luckily, the article is much better than the title, and there are some nice pictures, as well... Here's a small sample: +++++++++++ GWA: How do the two of you collaborate on writing songs? COLVIN: When we lived in the same town, we used to work separately and then get together periodically to show each other the progress we'd made on different songs. But now that we don't live in the same town anymore, I guess that necessitated a different process. We met two separate times, for periods of four or five days, and pretty much had to stay in the same room and work together. It was really interesting. It wasn't uncomfortable. We have a lot of trust in each other, and there wasn't as much embarrassment on my part. I've gotten used to having to sing lyrics to somebody for the first time. It's not as excruciating as it used to be. We really collaborated more than we had in the past. We worked out musical ideas together, whereas I used to just leave that up to him and maybe suggest a few changes here and there. This time, we actually sat there with guitars and messed around, something that usually horrifies me. I don't like to sit and has out a song with somebody. I don't find it easy to think feel. But it was different...there were a lot of surprises. A lot of ideas came out, and it was clear that we had a record. +++++++++++ The whole article will probably show up on the guitar world web page next month (feature articles seem to lag one month), the URL is: http://www.guitarworld.com BTW, I couldn't find any Shawn articles in either the current or last months Acoustic Guitar magazine issues.... - -John ................................. . .
