My name is Beth, I'm 25, and I live in Washington, DC. I'm a relatively new Shawn Colvin fan. I didn't go see any of the Lilith Fair shows, but someone taped the pay-per-view for me, and I saw her at the Grammies, and anyway I'm a new fan. I saw her at the 9:30 Club here in D.C. two weeks ago, and she was so great! If no one has posted a review of that show and if anyone wants me to, let me know. One cool thing was she talked a lot with the audience, and I shouted out "are you gonna sing 'Wichita Skyline'" and she said "yeah I'm gonna do it right now" and she did! It was very cool. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm on the digest version. I just got my first digest post, and there were only 2 posts. How big is this list? When did it get started? Just curious. The saint of a man who owns SMOE is Jeff Wasilko. Not only does he do all the maintenance work required on both the hardware and software, he also boots 99.9% of the financial costs of keeping a server and domain up and running -- and it's not cheap. So, a few days ago I (as well as all the list owners on SMOE) got a message from Mike Connell, a friend of Jeff's and the owner of the Jewel and Patty Griffin mailing lists. He explained that a lot needed to be done to SMOE.org and that there was no way Jeff should or could pay for it all. Here's an excerpt from his message: >At the present moment, he (Jeff) is looking into replacing smoe.org with >more modern equipment, as the present smoe is a 7 year old dinosaur >(smoeasaurus?), and acting older than its' age. This is going to cost a >pretty penny. I can't see him footing the bill entirely, nor even a >majority of it. When >Jeff mentioned to me about a fund raiser to get a new smoe (he called it a >"beg-a-thon" ) I volunteered to head it up. That was a while ago, and work >commitments and a recent injury have kept me from starting this up until >now. The gererosity that has already been expressed is really amazing! Roxanne Finch wrote: >If you need someone to head up the fundraising for Small Repairs, I'd be >happy to do it. Just let me know. However, the guy that I mentioned in my original posting (Mike Connell) is already heading up the operation. Also, I'd like to make it clear that this is not a fundraiser specifically for Small Repairs, but for Smoe.org, the server that hosts Small Repairs and 41 other mailing lists. But of course, by helping Smoe.org, we also help Small Repairs. Steve H & Jason M. Lavochkin wrote: >Let me know what the procedure is and I'll be happy to contribute. & >Same here. I've been to the Coach House in I think 1988. I saw Concrete Blonde there. Do you remember them from the 80s? I grew up out there, in Orange County. Where do you live? I used to live in Orange (city). Anyway, the show was really good. She did have an opening act, it was a young woman named Anna something, I forget her last name. Anna played for probably 30 or 40 minutes, and then Shawn played for I guess about an hour and a half. Anna was very cool. She is probably my age, around 25 I'd say, and she said she was from South Dakota. Apparently Shawn is from there, too, so they have a bond! Also, Shawn is 5 months pregnant (which I didn't know), and Anna was asking the crowd what they thought would be good names for the baby. When Shawn came out, she was really nice, and she talked with the audience a lot. I was so thrilled when she played "Wichita Skyline" right when I asked her about it. I mean, I know she was going to anyway, but it was really cool! She had apparently given testimony that day at a Congressional committee hearing, and she talked about that a little bit. She said she is a recovering alcoholic, and that's what her testimony was about. She also talked about the Academy Awards (they were on the night before the show), and said Kim Basinger's acceptance speech made her cry. Someone asked her to hold up her guitar so he could see her pregnant stomach, but she said he could see it at the end when she took a bow. I thought that was kind of a rude question, but she was very gracious about it. I can't remember all the songs in order, and I'm a really new fan so I don't even know the names of all of them!! I saw that someone posted the set list for the San Antonio show, and I'm guessing it's the same. It sounds right. She definitely played "Sunny Came Home" and "Wichita Skyline" and "Get Out of This House" and "You and the Mona Lisa". It was so cool to see her solo with just an acoustic guitar! The only other times I've seen her (on TV) were with her band, and I think I like her better solo with just her guitar, although her band is definitely good. I guess that's about it for what I can remember of the show!! So how long have you been a fan? How long have you been on the list? Do you know how big the list is, like how many people are on it? I'm just curious. Thanks for writing! I hope you have a great time at the show! Love, Beth >>Hi Beth, I would like to hear about your review!
