Just wanted to write and give you a rundown of last night's show in San Antonio. It was definitely unique.... I had seen Shawn 7-8 times before this, but this was an interesting night. The Empire Theatre, last night's venue, is a theatre from the 20's that they have just restored. Incidentally, Shawn's shows this weekend were the first concerts played there since it re-opened. Pretty neat to let her open the theatre, huh? Anyway, the place is pretty small, about 800 seats, and she was sold out both nights. I was actually very surprised at the attendance as well as the audience response to her -- San Antonio is clueless when it comes to music (tejano and country are it here as far as music), and Shawn has never played here before, so I wasn't expecting the old "Shawn banter" that I had seen in shows where she was familiar with the crowd. I couldn't have been more wrong... it was nuts! Now here's what happened: Shawn was introduced, and she walked out onto the stage with Grace, her niece, an adorable little 4 year old with curly blonde hair. She held Shawn's hand on the way on to the stage, and bowed with her for the audience. The stage was set up like a living room... a couch, 2 chairs, a coffee table, a piano, etc., so Grace went over and sat on the couch while Shawn started singing "Someday." The only problem was, she didn't want to sit still, and didnt really understand the whole "audience thing," so she ended up climbing all over the couch and coming up to ask Shawn questions while she was singing. Shawn couldn't get through much of the song because she was laughing, and we were laughing, and Shawn said, "I should have known she was going to upstage me." It was just too funny (and a cool image for all you aspiring performers out there) -- the image of a child on the stage who didn't give a rip about the audience, she just wanted to have fun with Auntie Shawn. Grace's dad finally came out and snagged her halfway through the song (Shawn said, "I promised her mom that I would only keep her out here as long as it was still cute. Once it is no longer cute, she's outta here!) and Shawn finished, but that set the tone of the concert, and it was all downhill from there. Right away the audience started talking to her, and halfway through the show, we had a 15-20 minute question and answer session with Shawn: "Which song did Joni Mitchell do backgrounds on?" ("Just the handclaps on 'Object'") "How far along are you?" ("I don't know anymore. I thought it was a nine month pregnancy, then you find out it's really ten months, I don't know.... 23 weeks") "Who cuts your hair?" ("The same person who cuts Meg Ryan's hair... it's the closest I can get to ever looking like Meg Ryan.") "Are you Irish?" ("no, I'm just a mutt... some Native American, mostly just mutt") -- and this went on and on and on. Shawn was even amazed at the audience... they wouldnt let her sing! Someone finally requested "Object of My Affection," which she attempted to play but couldn't remember, so she ended up doing "Tenderness on the Block" instead. After that song, the requests started coming fast and furious, so the whole set list was just shot to heck. Grace came back out for "You and the Mona Lisa" and walked back and forth on the coffee table the whole time. Shawn told her Lyle Lovett story about writing songs for kids and then sang the song mainly just to Grace. And Grace knew all the words..... Shawn fought with her guitar all night trying to keep it in tune... she explained that she bought it awhile back from "a guy," and it had a great tone, but it just wouldn't stay in tune. We finally got it out of her that she bought it from none other than Charlie Sexton, and it's a Martin 0018. Someone asked her how much she paid for it, and she said, "Well, now, that's between me and Charlie!" A couple of stories: She talked about being on Oprah the other day, and said that the Oprah people didn't really get into mapping out everything that was going to be discussed like the other talk shows do. She told the Oprah people, "Now I live in Texas, and I know Oprah was here recently for the whole beef thing. What Oprah doesn't understand is that a Texan would rather eat a mad cow than give up his barbecue." She said that they told her that Oprah probably wouldn't want to discuss that. :) She also talked about opening for kd lang way back when at the Birchmere in D.C., and said that she actually had to share a dressing room with her. She tried to talk to kd, but kd just sat there and stared at her.... she didn't talk to her at all! Shawn said, "All right, no problem, she doesn't want to talk to me... I'm just a little opening act." She said that after the show, she was getting into the car to leave, and across the alley she spotted kd lang crouching down and lighting firecrackers! She said, "Well, I guess she knows how to relieve the stress!" Shawn had on a black sleeveless dress with a white sheer vest over it and black (very low-heeled) sandals. She looked good... same hair (reddish, in the AFSR album cover style). She doesn't look 6 months pregnant, and she didn't seem too tired. By the way, someone in the audience asked her during the Q & A session, "Why is your name Shawn?" She said, "because my parents named me Shawna, and people started calling me Shawn, and it just stuck." Just wanted to confirm the name thing for you all... I heard it from the horse's mouth! After the show, we went out back and stood next to a really swwwweeeet Toyota Land Cruiser with leather seats and everything else imaginable.... brand new. Turns out that it was Shawn and Mario's truck. She came out and said hi... I shook her hand (I WAS COHERENT!!!!!! I actually was able to speak like a normal human this time, folks!) and asked her if her trusty Martin was on the mend. She said, "Yes, I fell down with it..." I told her I had just bought a Martin, and she said, "Well good luck with that!" We talked for a minuite about the Patty Griffin concert where I met Shawn last month. Mario, her sister, and her sister's husband came out and got in the car (Her sister looks exactly like her, only younger and taller with long dark hair)... Shawn said goodbye and got in that beautiful piece of machinery and drove off. I am coveting that car... forget her talent... I just want the car. So that was my night with Shawn... what a crazy, informal concert it was! I think she just doesn't care anymore... she's pregnant and happy, and she can do what she wants! I'll end this (finally) with the set list from last night: Someday (what she could get through) Get Out of This House (no Newt Gingrich story) Trouble Mona Lisa (with Grace and the Lyle Lovett Story) Another Long One Wichita Skyline Tenderness on the Block (no sing-along w/ audience) Satin Sheets (another request) Sunny Nothing on Me Encore: Shotgun (my request! w/ Slingblade) Diamond in the Rough I was very upset at the fact that she didn't do Steady On or Polaroids... stupid audience monopolized her time!!! :) That's all, folks! Additional musicians may join the concert lineup at the Backyard, contributing their efforts to aid the Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico. The concert site, Austin, is home to Accion Zapatista, which has protested the recent massacre of 45 Mexican citizens by paramilitary officers in the tiny town of Aeteal, Chiapas. The charity show will close out a three-week string of live Indigo Girls shows at high schools and colleges across the South and up the East Coast. The singer-songwriters will open the tour at Logansville High School in Georgia on April 13 and finish the adolescent expedition on May 7 at Irmo High School in Columbia, S.C. "(The Indigo Girls) made a conscious decision to play for their younger audience, specifically the real young ones who don't get to go to the concerts late at night," said Epic Records representative Lisa Markowitz. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
