Colvin, 42, together with colyricist and producer John Leventhal, beat out such fresh new product movers as Paula Cole and Fiona Apple to win two of the evening's biggest awards -- best record and song of the year -- for Colvin's haunting, melodic hit "Sunny Came Home," from her latest album, A Few Small Repairs. For the past decade, Colvin has written and performed extraordinarily moving country-folk songs about heartbreak, anger, love and redemption. She has released four studio albums, attracted an ardent fan base and earned a reputation among her colleagues as a musician's musician. But her records have always sold middlingly (A Few Small Repairs recently went platinum - a first for Colvin), and she has had to tour constantly in order to make enough money to break even. Likewise, Colvin has tackled her share of demons. She has survived drug and alcohol abuse, depression and a bad marriage, and has turned these experiences into fodder for some of her most affecting songs. Now, with two new Grammys, a settled life in Austin, Texas, with her second husband, photographer Mario Erwin, 42, and a baby girl due in August, everything is finally coming together -- which may prove to be Colvin's biggest challenge of all. What was going through your head when you won at the Grammys? We just let ourselves be excited. Deep in our hearts we truly, truly wanted to win; we truly felt that as much as anyone we deserved to win. But we didn't think we would. Are you comfortable with the fact that success has come later in your career? I would hate to have gone through something where it just came upon me and I hadn't made decisions about what I wanted to do [with my career]. And that's what it would have been like if something like this had happened in my 20s. It probably would have messed up my artistic development that happened to me after I cleaned up my act. On 'A Few Small Repairs,' there's a song called "The Facts About Jimmy," in which you sing, "I used to get drunk to get my spark/And it used to work just fine." It's rare for someone to look back at a wild time with something other than regret. Yeah. If you've cleaned up, there's a tendency to make a judgment on when you were using as completely bad, and of course it wasn't. It works for a while. Then it turns on you. But for those of us that went that route, there were some great moments. It's just too bad we had to get high to get 'em. [Pauses] It scares me to think of living that way again. You're newly married for the second time. How does a second marriage differ from a first one? The first marriage [to road manager Simon Tassano in 1993] was, for me, a lot about dreams and big ideas. I was stupid. The second one is more about the reality of living with someone, making a lot more room for what a person really is and being more cognizant of the things that actually make it worth committing a life to them. Do you find yours is a hard business in which to enter middle age gracefully? It is. I enjoy the people who fact it. I think Bruce Springsteen has faced it to a certain extent. I think the Rolling Stones haven't. They're not as interesting to me as when their age and their music were more in sync. I don't mean to say they're not being honest with themselves, but they're married, they have children. I mean, what's going on? Now that you're being grouped with artists like Paula Cole and Jewel, do you feel pressure to get a shtick? To show your bellybutton or something? I didn't feel it when I was younger, because I didn't have to sell millions. Image wasn't as important as it is now. To me, it was all about the quality. I mean, I'm the old one. I guess that's my shtick. [Laughs] That's nothing I had in mind for myself. (there's also a picture of Shawn sortof scowling with one hand behind her head and one lounging by her forehead, in a low cut purple and glittery top). :) Rachel "I don't want to be your petty heartbreaker but I know that I'll never be that girl on your turntable that girl on your t.v." -- the bangs, "S.O.S." - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ To join the Mary Lou Lord mailing list, email Majordomo@smoe.org with ONLY "subscribe jinglejangle" OR "subscribe jinglejangle-digest" in the BODY.
