I assume you realize, btw, that the "turkey baster method" is neither euphemism nor methaphor. It is precisely what it says it is -- the most common (and certainly least complicated!) means by which lesbians direct donated sperm for self-impregnation. 2) OK, Jean (of The Substantial Coiffure), it sounds like you should know the answer to my earlier question: Who was the blonde-haired woman playing bass before L. Klein joined the AFSR tour? - -Meri, still curious in DC- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Yours in Colvinism, Denise "Totally NOT" Capotosto - ------------------------------------------ The New York Times March 21, 1998 Shawn Colvin: Paring Down By JON PARELES NEW YORK—Some songwriters seem to emerge fully formed, with a gift for distilling stories and emotions into a few words and a shapely melody. Others improve as they go, and Shawn Colvin, who performed at Irving Plaza on Thursday night, is one of them. After winning two top 1997 Grammy Awards for her song “Sunny Came Home,” about an unhappy wife with visions of arson, she is touring as a solo performer. When Ms. Colvin released her first album in 1989, she already had the supple, slightly weathered voice, the guitar finesse and the amiable stage presence that turned clubgoers into fans. But as a songwriter, her musical debts to Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon and others were obvious; In her lyrics, she emoted over cliches and had a post-collegiate penchant for dropping book titles. Songwriting is a process of subtraction as well as creation; over the last decade, Ms. Colvin has pared down her songs, tightening up melodies and dropping most of the groaners. Not all of them; in one new song, she compares a mystery-mongering lover to the “Mona Lisa.” But now, her lyrics also have moments of epigrammatic clarity: “You don’t have to drag me down/I descend,” she sang in “Trouble.” At Irving Plaza, with a room full of adoring fans who yelled requests and sang a full verse of one song while she played guitar, Ms. Colvin chose songs about longing to escape and about settling in, about yearning for love and about breaking up. Most of the songs were from “A Few Small Repairs” (Columbia), an album about separation and finding oneself afterward, and Ms. Colvin brought out both the resentment and the loneliness. The solo versions revealed the craftsmanship of Ms. Colvin and her songwriting partner, John Leventhal, like the contrast in “Sunny Came Home” between cramped, earthbound verses and airborne ascending choruses. And when she ended the concert with the Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place,” a song about the comforts of home, she made it a benediction. David Poe, who opened the concert, can sound like a sweetly sincere folkie, wafting a gentle high tenor over finger-picking or bossa-nova chords. But his songs reveal a different character, a borderline sociopath: jealous, embittered, flirting with lowlife and possibly dangerous. It’s the kind of guy who, neighbors tell news crews after a crime, always seemed so quiet and well-behaved. On his album, “David Poe” (550 Music/Sony), the songs are smoothly disquieting; onstage, Poe swathed his voice and guitar in reverb, an effect that quickly changed from atmospheric to annoying. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
