The song Shawn does is called "Between Two Worlds" and it is an excellent "Shawn" song, although she didn't write it. I bought the soundtrack just for this song, and I didn't consider it a waste, although you are right in that the rest of the songs are not in the same mold at all. Shawn makes an appearance in the movie, although it is a cameo (about 30 seconds of her playing the song). Regards, John ................................. . . John DeFord . . It's Grace of My Heart and it's from 1996, what in my opinion reduces the chances of being in any coming Shawn Album. CD Prices in Brazil are not good at all (I can't get this Grace of My Heart soundtrack for 12,90) but I'll probebly buy it if it's a Show-ish song as we mentioned (perhaprs I should send you the bill if I don't like the song. :D). For anybody else who wants to have the CD, I am available to buy it and ship to anywhere else, for the face value + shipping. Just let me know if someone's interested. Shawn gets about 20 seconds of screen time, sitting on a tree stump and singing during a scene that's set on a late-'60s commune. Not to digress too much, but the movie itself is not so great, yet interesting. It's a cross between a biography of Carole King, a sort of "American Pie" on film, and "Forrest Gump." It's about a female songwriter (played by Ileana Douglas, the sister in "To Die For") who first works with a Phil Spector clone played by John Turturro, and later takes up with a Brian Wilson clone played by Matt Dillon. The film manages to work in references to just about every archetypal moment of '60s pop, and in the end the songwriter becomes a singer-songwriter. Shawn's song, sad to say, is fairly nondescript--like much of the other music, which apes styles ranging from Brill Building to "Good Vibrations" and (of course) "Tapestry," but is mostly mediocre. One exception is a song co-written by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach, called "God Give Me Strength," which is pretty gut-wrenching. Anyway, that's more than this subject is worth. And of course, it may be that I'm talking about the wrong movie altogether, in which case, as Emily Litella used to say...never mind. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Gillilan" Subject: [s-r] Shawn in Billbd. long article Shawn fans: Our girl is on the front cover in a major article in _Billboard_ magazine, March 14 edition. The article is "The Long Road Pays Off for Columbia's Colvin", by Paul Verna. It is about 4 lengthy pages long and has multiple photos of Shawn, with lots of new information on some future plans for her, and mentions Ron Fierstein and AGF in many places. It is an excellent article on her(the article is not on their website as of today). I have typed out only a few excerpts(to observe copyright laws) as below: "In the nine years since she signed to Columbia Records in 1989 as an up and coming star on the modern folk circuit and in the prior 21 years she spent developing her career as a performer and songwriter, Colvin has embodied the kind of work ethic that managers and label personnel wish all their artists could muster....."Shawn never compromised her integrity at any level. She went out and did it the old-fashioned way-she worked her ass off".[quote from Don Inner] Colvin says she took inspiration from the memory of Raitt's near-sweep[Grammy] in 1991. "Frankly, that episode is what gave me the most hope for winning this year", she says. "I think this has something in common with that". "These Grammy Awards", he[Ron Fierstein] says, "have as much to do with a recognition of her career work as they do with the specific song". Colvin agrees. "I think I was rewarded not only for good music for that particular song but for years of service", she says...... Kalodner explains, "They played me this really commercial song called '40 Red Men' and it was a real Shawn Colvin kind of song that sounded radio-friendly, but I didn't think it was a great lyric. I told her and John that I thought they could come up with better lyrics. Like any great artist, she was resistant, but she thought about it. Then, .. she went into Sony Studios and sang this new lyric called "Sunny Came Home"." [Don]Henley, who is trying to arrange for Colvin to sing on his upcoming album, says, "Her latest album was really a breath of fresh air. It restored my faith in songwriting. Lyrically, I think it's brilliant, and musically, it runs the gamut..." End of _Billboard_ quotes. Another Billboard article in today's website page at Billboard.com, lists Shawn Colvin to perform with Don Henley and Stevie Nicks, et.al, on April 16 in LA at the Wiltern Theater for the Walden Woods Project benefit(a Henley charity).
